Bayless Is Staying

WOW, did not expect him to pick up his option

Marc Stein ‏@ESPNSteinLine 3m
I'm told Grizzlies G Jerryd Bayless, in mild surprise, has elected to invoke $3.1 million player option for next season to stay in Memphis

lol... i liked Bayless in Toronto but that bald haircut...man...plus his stupid raptors nickname 'The Boy Bay" now i just cant stand to look at him. Decent rotation player though. 3.1 mil is fair for him. he is a better shooter than he showed last year.

I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing. Think of it this way too - he's an asset on an expiring deal now that could be paired with Tayshaun, for example, in a bigger deal.

I am on the fence about the deal. On one hand that is a pretty good deal, he stayed because Hollins is gone and loves the city. On the other hand we now can't go after a Redick or Korver because only have around $3-4 million left.

Levian did say on a radio show that Grizz can go over the cap if they see someone they like and don't have to pay luxury tax until after the season. So, could trade someone before trade deadline.

Also, Prince has almost zero trade value because under contract for two more years.

Just to clarify, although I think you alluded to it: Bayless' decision to opt in does not effect whether the Grizz can sign/acquire a player of significance - we should have the full MLE and ample TPEs at our disposal ---- but it could effect whether the Grizz will do so as it likely means going into the luxury tax.

I think all of you have eluded to the fact that will still need to make moves to acquire additional pieces and we are all in agreement to that fact. We also somewhat agree that Bayless opting in effects the amount we can pay and the type of player that will net. Those are true but it also causes a much bigger problem. We need a difference maker on the perimeter but we now have a logjam when it comes to minutes. Bayless plays best off the ball at the SG position but you also have Quincy who can swing between both the SG & SF, it is also believed that a resigned Tony Allen will play more minutes and not less because he now has a coach who believes in him, so for the sake of the argument, Tony will be at least a thirty minute a game player, how do we fit a difference maker into the rotation with quality minutes?

Secondly we have lost the financial flexibility and control we had over the needed additions, which does not do ZBO any favors since that cloud will continue to hang overhead as the easiest way to obtain that.

Player development or the lack thereof was a big concern and slight leveled at Coach Hollins, Dave Joerger may be many things but Magician is not one of them so this move impacts Jamal Franklin heavily as currently the minutes for his development are not there.

JB opting in makes it a necessity to make a larger move that maybe the organization was not going to make to not only create financial flexibility but also alleviate the logjam that currently exists without a viable upgrade. So while we may have been patient to see if Tayshaun could improve on his lackluster perimeter play, it now makes it imperative to focus on upgrading the SF position and deal him or ZBO to do so. I really don't believe they were not counting on having to make the move before the draft but it is now necessary.

Depending on Tony Wroten's play during summer league we will also be in the market for a backup PG. JB may love the city but he should still probably be renting and not purchasing anytime soon as he could be a throw in on a deal to clean up the minutes issue.

$ 3.1M is at a very good price if you take a look at last signings (Calderon, Jack, Budinger...)
