Kirilenko opts out... we should grab him!

Post#1 » by PetroNet » Sat Jun 29, 2013 5:27 pm

Andrei Kirilenko has decided to opt out of the final guaranteed year of his contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves and will become an unrestricted free agent.

Kirilenko for the mMLE? man if we could do that and then move mirza for a PG and ink Martin... wow.

Dwill | Miller (trade for mirza/toko/taylor)
JJ | Terry
PP | Kirilenko
KG | Evans
Lopez | Blatche | Kenyon

I'm surprised by this move by AK. I figured he was sure to opt-in for sure. If there is any possible way that we can obtain him for the exception, I'd do it. He can backup both Pierce and KG in spots at the 3/4. He'd be the perfect guy for that defensive hole we need.

I'm honestly surprised that he opted out.

However, considering Wallace got a 4yr/$40mil contract from us, he probably thinks he should be able to get a similar contract.

I'd find it hard to believe that Kirilenko would take that much less money just to play with us.

However, if he's just looking to get on a contender and doesn't care about the money, he'd be an awesome backup for Pierce and KG. We could actually run a bit with him on the court.

im not suprised at all. he indicated before he signed it he likely would opt out. its why he sought the player option in the first place.

he wanted to come here. we couldnt pay him. he sought the opt out to see if we could pay him this year. we cant. but maybe the money isnt an issue. i know he and proky are tight. we should be recruiting him hard. its clearly a great chance for him to win

money might not be a big issue for him. he donated his enitre salary to charity his last year in russia

Andrei Kirilenko, a free agent forward of the Utah Jazz, has signed a contract to play with CSKA Moscow in his native Russia during the NBA lockout. FIBA.com reports that Kirilenko signed a three-year deal with CSKA. Kirilenko also said that he will donate all of his salary earned in Russia to charity.

also said this about resigning with the jazz a few years back

"I don't think the money is going to be an issue,'' Kirilenko said. "I understand that I look at the world realistically. I understand my value is going to be a little lower than it is right now. I'm not worried about that. Money has never been an issue. It's good to have a good contract and money. But my priority is basketball.''

If he is legitimately tight with Prokhorov and could come here, that would be incredible. The team's Offense/Defense capability would be amazing.

I'd also like to mention that this is why it's good to make noise. Obviously the market-size may not matter as much to someone from Russia, but given the amount of buzz around the Nets right now, I don't think it's out of the question that Kirilenko might come here for less money.

What? Do you really wanna sign AK47 to a 3 year deal? He hasn't played more than 70 games in a season in several years.

He isn't taking the MMLE. He will want more.

1) of course i want him. he is an outstanding defender at 2 positions who can shoot and has a super high bbiq. who cares if he misses time. his role would be 18-22 minutes off the bench, not starting.

money isnt an issue. he doesnt care about the cash. thats why he opted out. thats why he donated his salary to charity.

Hell, if that's the case, hopefully he'll play for the vet min.

I would take Kirilenko to split minutes with Pierce.

I know we don't have a lot of money to go around and we're looking to sign probably 2 more players (MMLE and veteran's min) but we need to prioritize our bench.

Can Taylor back up Deron?
Can Terry back up Johnson?
Can Toko back up Pierce?

Which out of those is our biggest priority?

I say we start there then move on.

id say PG/SF/SG

terry can back up, and JJ is the guy most suited for big minutes of that 3

So would you rather see more money go to a Devin Harris type guard, who will see less mpg, than say an AK type forward, who will see more time and can play both forwards?

Trying to think this one out for myself as well.

That may have been me and I apologize if that's the case. Still though, he's going to get a lot more money elsewhere than what we can offer him.

I don't think he'll get more than 10 million though, which is what he would have been paid if he opted in.

The reason why taking the vet min. for us last year was ridiculous was because it was a difference of 1 million dollars and 10 million dollars being offered by Minnesota, per year. At least now, we could offer him 3 million dollars a year, and although that's still a significant salary decrease than he could get, I don't think it's unheard of to turn down that money in order to play for a contender, especially if you get a long-term commitment.

The questions I have are:

-Would he be willing to come off the bench?

-Would we be willing to give him a 3 year deal on the MMLE?

Personally, I'd gladly give him a 3-year, 10 million dollar deal, like what we gave Mirza. Would he be willing to come off the bench? Because you're not going to find a better KG backup than Kirilenko, and although he's not really a SF, it's not ridiculous to play him there for a few minutes and give Pierce a breather and go with a bigger lineup.

The main issues we'd need to address though would be finding a backup PG with nothing more than the vet min., and finding a shooter who can play both wing positions with nothing more than the vet min. That would be tough, unless we were willing to trade Mirza/Taylor/Toko in a package for a solid bench player, as PetroNet has suggested.
