Will Greg Monroe get a contract extension this summer?
I believe he is eligible to sign one right up til late October... and it could be for 4 additional years at around $62 million or $16.5 million per.
Should we wait, or should we try to lock him up now?

No harm in waiting to lock him up next season when he's an RFA.

Re: Will Greg Monroe get a contract extension this summer?
No reason for the Pistons to do it. They'd still have all the leverage with him as an RFA, well I guess a little less as Monroe would only be risking injury playing through one more season to hit free agency rather than two if we offered the extension now.
We have to see how he plays this season with Drummond full time, and if he can play PF long term. Also Monroe is tired of losing just the same, and would probably choose to wait just the same to see if the organization is heading in the right or wrong direction. Privately he can't be really impressed with the off-season decisions. Also there is a lot of uncertainty with the team given Dumars is on the last year of his contract. If Gores decides to go in another direction that means a new GM and probably a new coach. How many coaches has Monroe had in his three seasons here - Cheeks will be his third in four years.

No, we'll allow the market to determine his worth...

If he signs below the max this summer then lock him in. If not, wait for 2014 to see if anyone offers him the max.

I think I remember hearing his agent saying a while back that its always been the plan for him to test RFA.
We'll be able to keep him next summer so long as we're willing to pay whatever the highest bidder is willing to offer.

And we won't pay our back-up center max money.

Re: Will Greg Monroe get a contract extension this summer?
I would try and extend him this Summer.
In my opinion, it's in the interests of both parties to work on a deal this Summer. Here is what Moose would earn signing a below max extension (4 years $48M) this year vs waiting to sign a max 4 year deal from another team at the end of next year (which we could match).
13/14 12M vs 4M
14/15 12M (24M total) vs 14.5M (18.5M total)
15/16 12M (36M total) vs 15 M (33.5M total)
16/17 12M (48M total) vs 15.5M (49M total)
17/18 FA (7 year vet can get a max deal at 30% of cap ~ $19M) vs 16M (65M)
Consider a scenario where he picks up a season ending injury next year. In that situation no team will offer him the contract he thinks he deserves. At that point you run the risk of him playing for the qualifying offer and becoming an UFA. Why take any risks with one of your core players?

What even is this? Its an EXTENSION. Meaning it latches on the end of something, like his contract. This is not baseball. You don't replace the last year of the rookie deal's salary just because he signed the extension one year earlier. He'll make the same on his contract if its a max whether he signs it today or July 2014.

It's already been said- he isn't even discussing an extension this summer. They want to get a max contract, and they know he didn't play well enough to warrant that this summer.
Additionally, if he basically continues to plateau in Detroit, and Mitchell excels, they can work a sign and trade with him and get some assets back.

My bad. For some reason I thought it kicked in early. I still think it's a good idea to get the deal done before the season starts, especially if you can negotiate something below the max. We are going to pay it anyway and, like I mentioned, an untimely injury could lead to a messy situation with risks on both sides.

I love Monroe, but it's just smarter to let him hit restricted free agency.

Re: Will Greg Monroe get a contract extension this summer?
For reference, last year these players from the 2009 draft class did sign an early extension:
Griffin, Harden, Curry, Derozen, Holiday, Lawson, and Taj Gibson. (I think Griffin and Harden were the only max deals)
Notable players that didn't:
Tyreke, Brandon Jennings, Jeff Teague, Gerald Henderson.
Obviously every situation is different, but I definitely prefer the approach of locking up your best players early. Plus it's the only time you are guaranteed to have any kind of leverage in negotiations.

Re: Will Greg Monroe get a contract extension this summer?
The downside for us of waiting a year is the max contract is a 5 year deal rather than just a 4 year extension.
There will be plenty of teams with space that will offer him Max... teams like Philly are already talking about getting Monroe or Cousins to add to whatever top 5 pick they land next year.

Re: Will Greg Monroe get a contract extension this summer?
Only the team that previously had the player can offer 5 years. So if we wait for him to accept an offer before matching, the longest that contract could be would be 4 years. That said, I'd want to sign him for 5.

Its HIS camps choice to wait until next off season, not the Pistons. I'm pretty sure they would like to lock him up early, but the indications are that his side made the decision to wait.

In order for Greg to be eligible for a 5 year deal (and it could only come from the Pistons), he would have to play 2 more seasons before his extension kicks in. If that's the scenario that plays out, fine by me. 2 more cheap years from a guy putting up #s well above his salary. Then you try to lock him up for more total money, but less annually, say $65-70 million over 5 years. Crazy fact is this would be the richest contract in franchise history if I'm not mistaken.
