Re: Joe off the bench
And that would fit how? You'd prefer starting Terry? He actually can exploit smaller backcourts with a 6'7 guard.

Re: Joe off the bench
I've said this before and agree. If we land another solid SG like Korver have Terry back up point and JJ come in with second unit.
I don't think it will happen, but maybe with pierce and kg he will do better in starting lineup.

Nah I wouldn't start Terry, I'd look to bring in another Bogans type shooting guard or trade Evans and someone for one if we couldn't get Chase Budinger with the Taxpayer's MLE.

Re: Joe off the bench
I'd sign Corey Brewer actually.
He's an awful shooter, but has actually been red hot from the corners and is a very solid finisher at the rim.
He can basically be our athletic version of Bruce Bowen.

Re: Joe off the bench
Well JJ has to commit to basically being a spot up shooter on offense this year, or yeah, he has to go to the bench. I think it's obvious he's the worst offensive player in our starting lineup now, so if he thinks he can pound the rock and ISO for most of the shot clock while not playing off-ball all that well, he'll hold us back from our true potential big time.
If he can't do that, a 6th man role where he basically plays a Manu, combo guard position is the best way to use him.
At this point, who honestly gives a **** about how much he makes? It's about what's best for the team, and a JJ that can't play off-ball is best used coming off the bench.

Yeah, that's where I'm at...if we get Korver, or Brewer as VC4P suggests, Kidd should really consider asking JJ to come off the bench, especially if he's having trouble reverting back to the off-ball role he played in Phoenix. If JJ is as low-maintenance as everyone says he is, he should go with it. It would honestly be ideal for him too...his ISO-style of play would actually be preferred with him as the 6th man. And we solve the issue of how to give Pierce rest...just use JJ as his backup.

No way do I want to start Krover or Terry over JJ.
And no way do I see us getting Brewer. Its a good though, but we need a capable starting SG.

Re: Joe off the bench
JJ is fine starting. That's the beauty of having 5 capable scoring starters. We SHOULD be able to start them all, and still manage their minutes so there's always a scoring option that we can run the offense through while giving them adequate rest so that they CAN finish the game as closers.

Re: Joe off the bench
Eh, I wouldn't until given a reason. Atleast give the whole starting five a chance together before making any hasty decisions. We have a great luxury of having nobody that can be double teamed, everyone in the starting five can post up. I wouldn't touch that yet.
He can do fine in catch and shoot situations if and only if Kidd sees where his sweet spots are from the outside and implement it within his system.
Joe's shot chart last season:

Paul's shot chart last season:

The grantland shot chart is backwards. Basically Pierce shot it better on the side of the wing that JJ struggled at and JJ shot better on the side Pierce struggled on.
Their sweet spots compliment the floor spacing that would give Deron, Lopez, KG way more easier shots but If we get a Tony Allen or someone that can really really play perimeter D or something then sure, bring him off the bench.

He won't start on the bench, they'll just manage the minutes so he plays a lot with the 2nd unit.

Re: Joe off the bench
There's no reason to bench Johnson. He will be the spot up shooter on offense.

Re: Joe off the bench
In general I like bringing athletes off the bench for energy while getting rhythm players involved early.
At this stage of his career JJ is going to be most effective as a catch and shoot guy who can use his size to exploit mismatches on the blocks. I think both of those qualities fit in well with the first unit, where he'd play with 4 other shooters he could kick out to. Terry on the other hand has always been a fast paced player, well situated to coming off the bench and bring in energy.
I'd imagine both Pierce and JJ will spend time with the second unit playing through them. It's actually an ideal situation to be able to ride the hot scorer in that respect (and limit the other one's minutes).

Re: Joe off the bench

COREY BREWER
Here is the perfect person to target with the MMLE.
- Very Athletic
- Good size 6'8"
- Good Defender
- Good in transition
Tony Allen is likely going to command more then the MMLE. He would be my first choice. Brewer is a close 2nd. He has his limitations as a player but he would compliment this lineup nicely. I would start him at SG and have JJ be the 6th man. Johnson would still get alot more minutes but we need to put someone on the floor who can defend the perimeter and run the floor since we are slow at C(Lopez), PF(Garnett) and SF(Pierce). Add Boobie Gibson as the backup PG.
Lopez - Blatche - Plumlee
Garnett - Evans - Mirza
Pierce - Toko
C Brewer - Johnson (6th man) - Terry
D Will - Gibson - Taylor

Re: Joe off the bench
I agree with going after Corey Brewer, but it sounds like we've got our sights set on Korver, who will command at least most of the MMLE, if not all of it. Considering who his agent is, considering his ties to Deron, and considering that we're a pretty attractive destination for free agents right now, I think we'll get him, unless someone offers him a huge deal.
Yeah, I would have liked an athlete off the bench as well, and Brewer would have been great, but Korver would be awesome off the bench as well. Best specialist shooter in the league right now, and from what I've seen, he's not a sieve on defense like a lot of the other specialists out there...he actually does a decent job. And he's a good passer when he catches it coming off those screens.
He also played over 30 mpg for a playoff team this year...meaning he could play major minutes backing up Johnson/Pierce, and we'd be fine. Even step in for them if they get injured for stretches of a season.

Re: Joe off the bench
Corey Brewer is pretty much perfect for this team, aside from the fact that he can't really shoot and is a very inefficient scorer. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to be on our radar. I'd be more than happy with Korver though.

Im not worried about the scoring/shooting, I think we will be OK there. I like Korver, and would love to get him, but adding him would be redundant. We need someone who specializes at perimeter defense. Johnson, DWill and Pierce are all good team defenders but they all have trouble with speedy quick guys.
We also need someone who can get out and run. Brewer is coming from the Denver blurr of a fast break and he would help us get some easy points.

Re: Joe off the bench
id rather bring pierce off the bench... better suited as a point forward, has chemistry and played with terry, and we could fit korver in at the 3 more easily then the 2.
its all moot, starters likely only get 16 minutes together over the course of the game. the rest is mix and match

is that the same brewer that was on the knicks last year or different guy?
