Rookie Season Predictions

Post#1 » by MrBigShot » Fri Jun 28, 2013 4:33 am

Now that the draft is over, I figure it would be cool to make some predictions...no particular format necessary, but I guess this is a start:

Rookie of the Year:
Trey Burke. He'll start at PG eventually with the Jazz and show people why he was the best PG in the draft.

KCP's rookie stats:
14/5/2 on 44/38

Bold Prediction: Will probably edit this later...

Bust: Nerlens Noel

Biggest Steal:
McLemore at 7. He is a bit high, but for him to be picked at 7...wow. Hardaway Jr. is a guy that will come in and contribute right away as well, who was picked late. Ledo is another guy who could end up a top 5 player from this draft.

I figure Mitchell will make the team and do well as a backup, and I think Siva will replace Bynum. Happy with the draft overall. Sad that we didn't take Burke, but I like KCP and wish him nothing but success now that he is a piston. Will definitely be wrecking with him in 2k14.

ROY: Otto Porter
KCP's rookie stats: 9 points/3 boards in 20 mins of the bench on 42-44/35-37 from deep
Bust: Anthony Bennett
Steal: Allen Crabbe at #31'
Bold Prediction: Mclemore struggles at Sacramento due to the team culture (ie Evans and Cousins)

Guess this is why I don't make threads very often...lol. Could definitely see McLemore struggling in Sactown. I think TRob would have done significantly better if he landed somewhere else.

ROY: Otto Porter
KCP: 12 pts, 2.5 assists on 42% FG and 35% 3PT shooting
Bust: MCW
Steal: Allen Crabbe - Dude can flat out score. One of the best SGs in the draft IMO. Can't believe he dropped out of the first round.
Bold Prediction: All 3 of our draft picks will make our roster while Kim English gets dropped.

I'll wait until after summer league and see how free agency shakes out before making bold proclamations.

One thing I will bet on- Burke will NOT be ROY, and won't even make all-rookie team.

Here's another bold prediction- but picks 7-11 ( Mclemore, KCP, Burke, CJM, MCW) will end up with better careers than picks 1-5 (Bennett, Oladipo, Porter, Zeller, Len)

ROY: CJ McCollum (He's like a hybrid of Lillard and Curry but a bit lite versions of each of them IMO)
KCP: 13/4/2 on 43/37
Bold Prediction: Shabazz actually turns out to be an All-star (This is just being silly)
Bust: Noel (Knee explodes)
Steal: McCollum

I would've picked McCollum to be ROY, but I don't think he'll be able to display as much with Lillard as he could on a team without him or a defined PG. If McCollum went to a team where he could've been the PG then I definitely would've picked him to be ROY. Don't think he can show enough not being the primary ball handler

ROY: Oladipo
KCP: 6pts 3rebs 1ast
Bold prediction: Burke will be a hell of a lot better than what people think
Bust: KCP
Steal: Dennis Schroeder, hes got great potential and I can see him being a starting pg in a few years.

As stated, too early but here goes.
ROY: I would gone with McCollum but as stated earlier, playing with Lillard will effect his stats, so I'll say Otto Porter.
KCP stats: 9/5/3
Bold prediction: Sac trades McLemore at the deadline
Bust: Bennett
Steal: Mitchell :)

Way too early, but a few guesses based on fit, readiness:

Bennett will be competing for shots with Kyrie Irving and Waiters, and even for PT with TT. I don't like the fit for this kid, and wonder if he'll thrive. It might be better for him to come off the bench where he could be a primary scorer for the Cavs.

Oladipo will be a nice player in Orlando, but not a scorer (at least as a primary option on offense).

Porter will get a lot of PT and is a fit in Washington. But I see him as a guy who'll struggle for a couple years against better NBA talent. He's the kind of guy who might develop into a better performer as he gains his man strength.

Zeller has gone to the franchise from hell. Actually, as an athlete playing with other mega athletes like MKG and Biyombo, that could be a racehorse team. I think Zeller is too physically weak to be a highly effective player right now. I question whether in yr 1 we'll see very much of his vaunted but hidden mid and long range shooting prowess.

Len will give Phoenix nothing in year 1 - too raw and coming off an injury.

Noel - see Len, above.

McLemore - I will be surprised if this deferential kid does much of anything in Sacramento. I don't get how he was this highly rated with his disappearing act much of the season. I get he has high upside, but he's a great candidate for being THE disappointing pro from this draft. The fact that he's out of shape is just astonishing to me, and indicates that he doesn't have a high motor and might never. I don't believe he'll ever be a highly self-motivated player, and the NBA is a league where coaches do not motivate players.

KCP - I think he's way further along in his development, and is just a good an athlete as McLemore. If the Pistons don't bring in a PG that pushes Knight to SG, or a SG that plays in front of KCP, then he'll get a lot of minutes this season as a starter. His skill set should be such that he'll be a major recipient of Monroe's passes, and our PG's kickouts. His ability to defend should keep him in the rotation. He has a quick release and the ability to create space to get off his shots -- he's better than McLemore in that regard, I think -- so unless it takes him a bit too long to acclimate to the NBA players, he could be quite a good player in year 1.

Burke - I can imagine that Utah will want to give this kid major playing time. I just believe, however, that Burke is the wrong combination of being too small and too unathletic to ever be a top performer in the NBA. I am sooo thankful that we didn't draft him. So, even if he plays, I predict he won't be good - especially in year 1.

McCollum - might be very deadly in combination with Lillard. I don't get how they defend other teams backcourts, but those two will score billions of points. He could well have the stats to be considered high up on the rookie of the year rankings.

MCW - I like MCW as a prospect a lot. But Philly is a team that should/could be a mess this season, and it may take MCW a couple years to become a good then great point in this league. Also, it's unlikely that he'll be an effective shooter for awhile. Hard to imagine him as a legit ROY candidate.

I don't foresee any other rookie this season being a candidate for a big statistical season, so I guess it's down to Bennett vs. KCP vs. McCollum for ROY. Darkhorses, Oladipo if no rookie has a big offseason offensively, which with this class is certainly possible, or McLemore if I'm 180 degrees wrong about him.
