Stuff like this is what makes me love this forum. I know very little about this kind of stuff but get the insight.Kilroy wrote:EArl wrote:You're the mod you tell us.
Also if Kobe does resign when his contract is over. How much is to much?
Not that kind of Mod... You have me confused with Doc.
But to answer the question, a contract can be renegotiated and extended after the 3rd anniversary of it's original signing. There's a negotiation window between March and June each season.
And the contract can only be negotiated down 40% from the salary before the extension.
Kobe signed his current extension in early april 2010. So I think he could theoretically sign a renegotiated extension at this point.
So if that were to happen, I think the best we could offer (for us) would be 18M/4yrs....
The longest we could offer is 4 yrs and the least we could offer is 18M... So something along those lines... There's also the over 36 rule, but I don't think that get's us anywhere in this instance.
While that wouldn't necessarily be great for us financially, it'd be better than 30M and keep Kobe on the team.
To me, 18M for 3 or 4 years sounds really high. I think it would make more sense to let his contract expire and get him in the 10M range... But that would mean letting him become a free agent, which might bite us.
