ComboGuardCity's Off Season Plan

Post#1 » by ComboGuardCity » Mon Jul 1, 2013 5:36 pm

Well, I think Josh Smith is going to become a Piston and he's going to play SF. He wasn't my first choice, but its a gamble our franchise probably has to take at this point. With that being said, here it is:

1. Sign Josh Smith to a 3 year $45 million deal with a 4th year player option.

Essentially, we're offering him the extra year the Hawks weren't. He'll be 30 when his contract expires so we get him for his entire prime. At that point he'll either opt in for his final year or look for a longer deal. This is convenient because its the year Andre is up for an extension.

2. Sign O.J Mayo to a 4yr/36 million contract.
I think Mayo is more of a Billups signing than a Gordon signing. Why? He did show improvement last year and I think he can make an excellent 6th man/3rd guard a la Manu Ginobli. This offer is pretty fair and I think it gets the Job done. I doubt Utah will offer him something substantial and the Clippers just can't.

3. Sign Dorrell Wright to a 3yr/15 million deal
We need to fill out our bench with lights out shooters to compliment our starting lineup. Wright is still young and fits the bill as a guy who could be a very good shooter.

4. Sign Eric Maynor to a 3yr/12 million deal
We also need a backup passing guard. Maynor fits the bill.

5. Trade Stuckey to Utah for Jeremy Evans. + 2014 2nd round pick

Its about dumping Stuckey.

6. Trade CV to Atlanta for a 2014 2nd round pick
Hawks need to meet the minimum cap somehow and it preserves space for 2014.

Our roster:
1. Drummond
2. Monroe
3. Knight
4. Singler
5. Middleton
6. Tony Mitchell
7. Kim English
8. Slava
9. Jonas

Great job with your post. But I'd rather resign Calderon than have knight as our starting point guard. And use that money on Jose instead of mayo, and use knight as the role of 6th man combo guard

This is a golden idea. And I like how Jose Calderon wasn't resigned.
Great amount of athleticism, defense, and shooting.

Mayo is an underrated playmaker and Knight has shown flashes of being a solid playmaker when Prince was traded and Calderon wasn't on the team yet.

As in a post entry? Shouldn't be very difficult to get Moose a post entry. He will be who we run the offense through.

Not a bad plan, CGC. That team would probably have too much depth, which could put them in a prime position to make a deadline deal and get a significant upgrade somewhere.

Knight, Mayo, KCP, Smith and Maynor.

While Knight's assist #'s plain suck, he does execute some well placed passes. The numbers suck because after it hits their hands, his teammates tend to dribble it around for 10-15 seconds, or pass again.

Josh Smith averaged over 4 assists last year. KCP has enough size and height that he can get a pass where it needs to go. Maynor has always been a pass-first guard, and Mayo can do some ball handling as well.

Congrats CGC, this is the best off season plan I've seen so far. I'm all for adding solid vets to fill the bench like Wright/Maynor...I see you even put some thought into cooordinating contracts when our main guys are due for extensions.

My concerns:

Can Josh Smith play SF? Defensively...we know he can, but on offense...the spacing between our frontcourt will be awful. You could probably put me in there and the spacing would be better, and I'm a streaky shooter at best...

Also concerned about not having a real playmaker to feed Dre/Moose. Moose is a very good passer for a bigman, but he can't run the offense by himself...Knight has to become an average starting PG at least for this to be successful...and even then I'm not convinced Smith/Moose/Dre will work.

I'd prefer Iggy to Smith, and Green to both of them because he's young, and a real SF. I think Jeff Green is a stud...honestly the only non-all star SF I would take over him would be Kawhi Leonard.

Should we really pay Maynor 12 million to play 10 minutes per game

I like the plan but I'm still not a fan of Josh Smith.

Thanks man. I prefer Green as well, but I'm not sure the Celtics are willing to part with him. He's going to be an all star very soon IMO. On the topic of Josh Smith, Yes, I do think he can be successful here. Look at that Grizzlies team that made it to the WCF, albeit they got swept

Conley 37% 3pt Shooter
Allen 29.5%
Prince 36.6%...but only shot 1 /gm
Randolph N/A
Gasol N/A

The team above will be a better shooting team than that and IMO, will have a smoother offense within a couple of years.
