Non-Bird and Cap Hold?

Post#1 » by shrink » Tue Jul 2, 2013 3:26 pm

Andrei Kirilenko just opted out of his contract with the Wolves, so he's a UFA. That means no cap hold, correct?

So suppose MIN dumps it's MLE and TPE, get's to about $7.5 mil in cap space maintaining it's holds on Pekovic and Budinger, and uses it in free agency. Is Kirilenko still available to them through the non-Bird Exception?

Is there truly no cap hold on players that a team can bring back through the non-Bird?

No, there is:

See all the usual places:
Non-Bird (caphold) 120% of his previous salary

Andrei Kirilenko (opt) - $11,735,219 120% of previous salary

(Andrei Kirilenko) 11,735,219

So the wolves would need to renounce his rights to get rid of the hold?

The opt out didn't erase that?

Or have him sign elsewhere, but yes.

Correct. Unless you renounce or he signs elsewhere, there's a cap hold. Other odd exceptions here and there, but I believe they revolve around drafted rights.
