Daryl Morey 790 interview 7/2/13

Post#1 » by Mr. E » Tue Jul 2, 2013 1:11 pm

Some highlights of Daryl Morey's interview on 790 a few minutes ago.

The Rockets are all-in for Dwight.

If the Rockets do not get Dwight they will be hurt because they would not have made some of the moves they have made this offseason, but it's worth the gamble.

Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin are NOT on the trading block.

When they were trying to open cap space for Dwight they did field calls for those two, but believed they could open the cap space without moving them.

Having Omer on the team was one of the key selling points.

There is no plan for a Twin Tower lineup, but rather a constant defensive/rebounding presence at the 5. Part of this came from the realization of how badly the defense & rebounding fell off without Asik on the court.

Morey believes that Asik splitting time at Center is far more valuable than anything they would be able to bring in at the Power Forward position.

Refers to the Rockets as "Team China"

Les has said that he has money, but he wants rings.

I missed part of the interview. I just heard the part about Dikembe Mutombo being part of the Rockets recruiting pitch as well with a personal message to him about signing in Houston.

guess we aren't going after 3rd max player to please Howard
noway we can get one without trading Asik or Lin (unless Morey lies)

Well...Morey is a poker player, so you can never really tell.

I'm pretty pleased that Dream, Yao & Dikembe all are taking such active roles here. One of the best things that will happen if Dwight does choose to come here is that it sounds like Dream will finally take an active role with the organization as a personal mentor/coach for Dwight.

I'm happy that Deke identifies himself as a Rocket. I always figured he looked at himself as a Nugget.

good to see Hakeem, Drexler, Yao all helping Rockets even after they retired (well Drexler is actually still working for Rockets)
i never see these many people go recruit a player

I don't know how much stock I put into Morey's words about Asik/Lin. He'd logically look to seek value for Asik if we did indeed get Dwight (I've got a bad feeling he'll re-sign though). But I do think he's serious about it only being for value sort deals, b/c I'd almost agree with the point of view of rather having Asik as a backup C and having TJones/DMo as our starting 4's until the deadline instead of overpaying for Josh Smith.

Under the new CBA, it makes a lot more sense to wine and dine FAs. Due to all the caps and limitations, the top guys are almost always underpaid. At that point, team amenities, culture, city lifestyle, and opportunity to win are going to be the biggest draws for the guys who can name their price. In the past, they could at least put bonus incentives into the contracts (Tim Hardaway's TO Ratio incentives) or whatever to make up some gaps, but that's all been struck down I believe.

BS If Asik and Lin were that important they would have been in L.A. specially Asik. Both are on the block

Asik would be one of the easiest players to move and get great value for, Lin not so much but I can understand where Morey is coming from when he says Asik is not on the block. I can't think of another back up center of that caliber in the league.

My interpretation of Morey's comment is that the Rockets are not aggressively shopping Asik/Lin around because they don't have to trade them in order to sign Howard. Not that they are untradeable. Of course Morey will consider trades for them if he gets good value in return. Heck, Morey will trade Harden away too if the value was high enough (say, if he was offered LeBron James =).

Would this be possible aftert Dwight signs? Anderson and Lopez together make #13.6m but Asik is making only $8.4m

Looks weak for New Orleans since I don't know how much they'd value Lin when they already have Vazquez and while Gordon is an IR casualty, SG is a rare position to fill in the NBA this season.

we dont need another 3rd max player, if we can get d12, we can go for milsap...les will go over tax np, as long as it is a reasonable contract and player...the key for les is getting d12, then he is gonna surround him with good players even if it means going over tax.
