there are very few playoff/championship level SF's. there might only be 10 in the league, every other team is playing with someone who is not going to be good enough if they reach late in the playoffs. we are one of them.
We have a chance now to get one that will make a huge difference in turning a nice young core, into a good/great team. Once you have that filled, you can slowly fill in the last remaining roles.
this slump has been ok as ive gotten to know the league a lot better as ive had something to follow in the offseason, but its not fun to keep doing that every year, you want to start winning eventually. we've got the money saved now, theres no reason to not try and be a winning team.

I think at this time Pistons should be in a “win now mode.” Drummond, Monroe, and to a lesser extent Knight are potential all-stars who may want to leave if they don’t believe they can win a championship in Detroit. Pistons also want to make the pick owed to the Bobcats as insignificant as possible. If Dumars can get the right pieces and Pistons are able to win 40 or more games that pick could be at 14 or lower. Winning also attracts top-tier free agents.

But the question is, are we going to win ENOUGH? Those low lottery teams like the Bucks are hardly attracting free agents. Heck, the Hawks were always pretty decent and are looking to do a total rebuild. I don't want the Pistons to end up like them, stuck in mediocrity but unable to really do anything about it but rebuild. I think that unless we want to hope for a series of things to open up a path to the Finals occurs (Lebron and DRose getting hurt), or we believe Drummond will develop into the next Dwight and that we can find enough good role players to surround him like Orlando did, getting into the Wiggins sweepstakes THEN going for it is the best course of action, long term.

I've heard this argument a couple times here, but what star players have ever left a team after their rookie deal because the team wasn't winning enough? Shaq is the poster boy for this move, but he left a really really good Magic team for LA's huge market. It was a lifestyle choice as much as a basketball one. Other than that, I can't think of any players offhand that teams offered good rookie deal extensions to that were turned down. A player would have to accept much much less money--a year playing for the QO instead of the first year of a $12m+ extension, plus a shorter FA contract. Seems like a paranoid argument. (And can we let Knight become at least a decent player before we talk about making moves to keep him happy?)

Also why do we care how much that bobcats pick is worth? If it's higher than 8, who cares if it's 9 or 25? If it's not ours, no sense in trying to make the Gordon deal look smarter than it was. Dumars is the only one who should care. Doesn't matter to the team's future at all.

I'm with all of the people who thought this was a ridiculous offer. If I am the Raptors GM, I literally hang up the phone...literally. Rodney Stuckey and Charlie Villa-no-way-i'll-play-D-ueva for Rudy Gay? Rudy Gay is a top 10 SF in this league. He's not worth his contract, but it will take more than 2 expirings to get him, especially because he has 2 years left on his contract, so he is nowhere near unmovable.

If Joe D actually pulls this off or switches the deal up a bit with the same main pieces, It will be a flat out robbery. Win win. Get rid of Stuck/CV, get Rudy Gay...a good SF who only has 2 years left in case he doesn't work out.

Why are people in a hurry to win?

I started typing a rather long post and simply couldn't be bothered to finish it!

It's emotionally draining to support this franchise and quite frankly I believe some are over it!

Personally I would have gone in a completely different direction this off-season... because I would have "retired" Joe and got McDonough or Hinkie to run the team.

But such is life... we roll with the punches and move forward as we always do.

At least we all have the meories of us dominating teams... when Big Ben, Sheed, Prince, Rip and Chauncey were holding teams under 70... that starting unit is still not appreciated enough IMO

Every single thing about what we've been shown to be trying to do is in the name of "winning now".

I'm sure there are those among us who would have no problem waiting, but its a moot point.

Wise words.

There's also value in cultivating a winning culture. Guys like DNP-CV and Stuckey are used to losing, they don't know how to win, and are perfectly comfortable collecting a check and mailing it in.

We don't want those philosophies endorsed by guys like Monroe and Drummond.
