I Miss Having the Full MLE

Post#1 » by Tiesto_Lakers » Wed Jul 3, 2013 11:05 pm

The good ole days, when we could be over the cap by the same amount as we are now and still have the ability to offer players over $5 million/year, which is a big chunk of cash.

This MMLE stuff is no fun.

Seriously. We could get players to take a cut from 7-8 mil to around 5 but now down to 3? Tough.

the unfortunate part will be that despite the new harsh CBA people will find a way to blame Jim buss for not continuing the previous approach that the lakers were able to have success with.

The ultimate effect of the new CBA hasn't worked itself out yet...
I think ultimately, all good teams will be ever the cap, and players are going to have to either accept mediocrity or much lower pay to be on contending teams.

It's not just about the Lakers. I think the Harden trade was the first indication of things to come.

There will be more good teams, but fewer great teams, and the concept of a Dynasty will likely be redefined to something much less that what we're used to. Contending teams will probably only contend for a relatively short time.

The MLE was a contending teams best friend. It allowed teams to reload at their weakest positions for cheap.

How are the heat able to sign such assets for so cheap? If only we could do that.

Yes, the writing is definitely on the wall.

BAttier and Allen are vets who are after rings. No one would have paid more than the minimum for Anderson.

i believe it's because of james and bosh taking a pay cut ... that leaves room for other good players to sign with them as they could get their money without taking a pay cut ... :-?

I wouldn't say its working. Lots of small market teams are having this same problem. OKC was so scared of paying the tax and having only the MMLE to work with they made some terrible trades and lost a key player. So far CBA has hurt OKC more than it has hurt us IMO meaning the small market team is being hurt more. The CBA does work in making it harder for the best team improves, but as far as small market vs big market, it doesn't differentiate.

Th thing is that a team wh is super good like the Heat is just going to keep getting better. Players who would be willing to take a cut from 8 million to 5 to sign with a San Antonio or Lakers are now not willing to do so, so instead they take a bigger cut and just compensate by going to the defending champions to go for a title. The SUPER rich can keep getting richer, but the "kind of rich" are stuck not improving, so IMO it makes the gap between the top 1-2 teams and the rest of the NBA even larger by not allowing the rest of the contending teams to improve. More players will keep taking vet min's for the Heat but they wont do it for us. Ray Allen is fine being paid 3 million by the Heat to win titles becaues the alternative is to play for 8 million..but for a **** lottery team. If he had the option to make 5 or 6 million and play for a contending team maybe he takes it. So not sure if this really helps make the top of the top NBA teams any worse...don't see it working.

An example is JR Smith or Andrei Kirilenko. Both of these guys are far too good to be making $3 mill/season, but they would probably settle for the $5.4 million which the MLE allows. Either of those guys would help our team tremendously.

P.S. Smith just re-signed with NYK for $6 million/season. So the MLE would have been realistic.
