The "Tank Again This Season" Idea

Post#1 » by Piston Pete » Thu Jul 4, 2013 4:47 pm

SF Harrison Barnes
C Andris Biedrins
SF Richard Jefferson
2014 pick

for

SF/PF Jonas Jerebko
C Slava Kravtsov

Works on the trade checker and frees up about $16 million for GS INSTANTLY. They get Dwight without having to deal with the Lakers at all.

We get Barnes, a 2014 pick, and have MAX cap space again next season. We tank and get a top-8 pick of our own....then Stuckey, Jefferson, CV, and Beans all expire.

Re-sign Bynum to a 1-year deal

Knight / Bynum / Siva
KCP / Stuckey / English
Barnes / Singler / Middleton / Jefferson
Monroe / Mitchell / CV
Drummond / Beans

Expirings: Bynum, Stuckey, Jefferson, CV, Beans

This deal also works and clears even more cap for GS -- about $23 million. On our side, everyone but Barnes is an expiring.

I'd love it, but I don't think GSW would want money back, (I think Jerebko and Krav add up to 7 mill?) So maybe someone like Singler and two seconds. That is, if GSW is even interested in dealing Barnes with other big contracts. I have no idea if they are.

GS only considers this if Howard is guaranteed. And even then, they can do better - a good prospect and no long term salary can still land them an asset in a cap dump.

Honestly, we probably couldn't tank properly with that lineup. It's pretty good for a decent playoff run.

Knock it off with the tank crap. It isn't going to happen especially with Joe being on his last leg.

GSW aren't giving away barnes just to clear space.
If anything they'll S&T howard with BArnes and Bogut going to the lakers.

this is just pipe dreams.

Exclude Barnes to make this fair.

I like the trade idea, Pete. But, I don't see how that would create a situation where this team "tanks" at all?

Barnes immediately fills a need for us. Barring injury, there's no way this team is worse next year with Dre starting.

Starting 5 is good, and has a ton of potential.

Bench....not so much.

Even if we don't tank and make the playoffs, I'd be happy getting a SF like Barnes.

Barnes will not be given away for cap space. If so, he'd already be on our team.

Tanking? Not this year. We will make the playoffs, guarenSheed! Seriously, we should make the playoffs. Boston, Milwaukee dropping out for sure. And Drummond will have his coming out party this year!

They are going to lose one of Barnes or Klay in S&T situation for Dwight with Lakers. Why send one good prospect to your division rival when you can send him to East?

Gores Has made it clear that he wants the team to be winning. Joe Dumars is on the last year of his contract and fighting to keep his job. There is no way we tank unless Gores specifically demands it, and frankly I don't think he even knows enough about basketball to understand how special the draft is. From his POV we already got 4 lottery players. Times up for us to rely on the draft.

This is getting ridiculous, we are the Detroit Pistons, we have 3 nba championships, we have had hall of famers and future hall of famers on our rosters. To ruin our teams legacy by becoming like the golden state warriors or the hornets/pelicans and tanking season after season is simply put blasphemous. We need to do what the pistons have always done and develop our own talent from the players that we have. Rip, Chauncey, and Ben were never any good until they came here because we used to know how to develop players in Detroit. We need to get back to that and not ruin our teams legacy by turning into season after season tankers. I'd rather trade away drummond and monroe than tank.

But... we have ruined our legacy and reputation over the last 5 years. You can blame Mr D's death, Karen and Joe for that. The fact we've hired/fired Curry Kuester, Frank in the last 5 years hasn't helped... throw in the waste of money that was Ben Gordon and CV-DNP... remember that we basically got nothing for Ben Wallace, Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and Rasheed Wallace....

WTF!

We need to do what the pistons have always done and develop our own talent from the players that we have. Rip, Chauncey, and Ben were never any good until they came here because we used to know how to develop players in Detroit. One could argue that we have failed to develop: Monroe, Knight, Jerebko, Stuckey, Daye...

We all know Chauncey killed it for Minnesota in the first round of the playoffs before we signed him...

Rip's stats in his last season with Washington in 2001-02 = 20ppg (43% FG) with 3.4 boards, 2.7 assists

Big Ben's stats in his last season with Orlando in 99'00 = 24 mins per, 50% FG, 4.8ppg, 8.2 boards, 1.6 blocks

One could argue they were good when we got them and didn't develop them

If GS decides they're willing to give up Barnes in a salary dump, they can deal with any team in the NBA that has the cap space.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.
