Pack it in - phase "Keep our draft pick" mode

Post#1 » by Piston Pete » Fri Jul 5, 2013 11:56 pm

Our priorities 1a and 1b have chosen to go elsewhere. Time to pack up the offseason wagon and let the kids play next season. They will make mistakes. They will show flashes of hope. But most of all, they will gain valuable experience and learn. Secondary objective; we must be bad enough to keep our pick next season (its top-8 protected).

Knight / Siva
KCP / Stuckey / English
Singler / Middleton
Monroe / Mitchell / Jerebko / CV
Drummond / Kravtson

Put onto the trading block: SF/PF Jonas Jerebko
Want in return: Anyone with an expiring and/or a future pick
Dream deal: Jerebko to Utah for Biedrins (and his larger, expiring deal) and the 2014 GS 1st rounder.

Ultimate goal: To get Wiggins or Jabari Parker (more realistic) in next season's draft.

I agree now that Joe's Option A and B are off the market - this is the way to go.

Either we overpay terrible FAs and finish 10 in the standings capped out for the next few years or we can stand pat, collect an additional lotto pick and try to do better in 2014.

If Gores wants to make a buck, he has to realize that teams are more hopeful when young talent plays then they are with average NBA players locked into big contracts.

Play the youth and rejuvenate the fanbase vs sign average FA lock us into mediocrity and watch attendance continue to decline.

Yep, I completely agree. We have to at least at this point in the game, to trade some of our mediocre talent like Jerebko/Slava/CV/Stuckey for a 2014 pick. We have to.

I'd rather do this and let our young core get the experience as starters than overpaying some hackjob or trading away an arm and leg for someone else.

At this point, getting a guy like Jabari Parker in next season's draft will be 10x better than anything we do or anyone we sign moving forward this offseason.

They were 8th worst this year. It would almost be impossoble for us to be worse next year. They are going to be at least a little better just off internal player growth, and all average role players we figure to spend our money on now. I expect us to win just enough to miss the playoffs, finishing somewhere between 9-14. That pick is going to Charlotte next year.

Any teams looking for instant cap savings?

Jerebko for a larger expiring and a late 1st would do the trick.

But keeping our own 2014 pick has to be priority #1 right now.

We're an injury to one of our starting bigs away from being the worst team in the league.

I hope this happens, but I just can't see Gores and Dumars letting it, I agree if Monroe goes down with an injury, we are one the worst teams in the league easily.

Please... Cha will have the worst record in the league and LAL will wind up winning the lottery. They are winning the Wiggins sweepstakes!

NBA is TOTALLY rigged!!!

This scenario is looking very likely all of a sudden.

Its really for the best -- when looking long-term

Our issue is we'll suck for most of the season and suddenly get those sweet, sweet end-of-the-season-we-only-won-because-everyone-else-is-resting-their-starters-or-tanking wins and **** things up.

Maybe we fire Joe sometime between now and mid season and we replace him with someone who will coordinate a proper late-season tank job.

PG = Knight 30, Stuckey 18 - hope Knight develops under Cheeks, showcase Stuckey for a trade.

SG = K.C.P 28, Stuckey 10, Middleton 10 - give playing time to the kids and we're showcasing Stuckey

SF = Singler 24, Middleton 8, Jerebko/Mitchell 16 - let the kids play

PF = Monroe 24, CV-DNP 18, Jerebko/Mitchell 6 - showcase CV-DNP

C = Drummond 28, Monroe 10, Slava 10 = let 'em play

*F depth = Jerebko/Mitchell
SG depth = English
PG depth = Siva

IF we need to spend some money to reach the minimum team salary then give Bynum and Maxiell 1 year deals to return and play them as little as possible

This is not the worst case scenario IMO.

The worst case scenario would be paying some 3rd rate Free Agent good money to come here and add some meaningless wins

In saying that there are still plenty of talented players out there that do fill a need and should fit with our roster. They're just not the "name" players everyone is so desperate to land - Millsap is still avialable

How do you know that? There is no guarantee they get better. What if Drummond or Monroe get hurt??? What if they both. Sign Shawn Bradley to play the point and TANK TANK TANK to the best draft we will see in 10 years.

In the spirit of this thread....

Det out: Greg Monroe
Char out: rights to Cody Zeller, Pistons pick returned, 1st of 2014 (top-5 protect maybe)

try to trade Jerebko for large expiring.(Biedrins and 1st?) maybe get other large expirings for future picks.

Then we can suck as much as we want and have extra cap space next year.

...Knight, KCP, Singler (role player but still), Zeller, Drummond, picks, LOTS of cap space next year

Millsap to Atlanta... FFS!

Worst! Off-Season! Ever!

Well, not quite... but it's very disappointing and for anyone who thought we could still trade on our reputation as THE Detroit Pistons it's a wake up call!

The last 5 years have taken us from dominant EC powerhouse to also ran!
