2/24 for a backup big is beyond too much. Especially for Millsap, who is a very solid, but nothing special bigman.

Re: We couldnt even get Millsap?!??
Correction- we didn't even want Milsap.
He's going to be a starter for Atlanta, I'm pretty sure he wanted to come off the bench for a lotto team.
Really, the problem here is that a lot you people are looking at Detroit's off season in a vacuum, like it's a "him or us" attitude. It's "us and 29 other places" for these free agents.

thats whats sad.. Millsap would've been a great player to have in the rotation.. starting or not he still woulda played 30+ mins a game and coulda given us a dynamic front court rotation

r u nuts? 2/24 for a backup big man?
Sorry, didn't mean that personally, just joking, lol, but honestly that;s way too much for a bench player when we have needs in the starting lineup still.

This is not just about Milsap man. We could have beaten Clevelands 2/9 offer on Clark...we could have at least signed a few vets by now. We have not signed a SINGLE free agent yet...

Re: We couldnt even get Millsap?!??
Hell, tell him he could start here with monroe at the 5 for the start of the game. Ya, I want drummond to start, but as long as he's getting 30ish mins a game, that's fine too. Milsap would've given us a beastly 3 big man rotation, with mitchell or jerebko picking up spot minutes here and there. This offseason is beyond pathetic now.

Re: We couldnt even get Millsap?!??
The fact that Millsap wasn't even on our radar speaks volumes IMO
We met with Josh Smith and Iguodala.... but not Millsap.
I guess signing a quality big man capable of playing 30 minutes each and every night and giving him $10 mil per is a bad thing.... even when you're paying 3 or 4 starters below what their real market value is!
Millsap is a professional - that's why Atlanta want him! They want him to come in and be a walking, talking example of what a real pro is!
And he wasn't even on our radar!

Not upset about passing on Millsap. Always liked him not not as a Piston.

Re: We couldnt even get Millsap?!??
Milsap wants to start not be a backup. He shouldnt have even crossed our minds, never an option.
It confusing how this is commonly known yet people struggle with it.

No offense, but c'mon, these guys aren't stupid; no big man who has aspirations of starting (Millsap, Hickson, etc.) is going to sign with us because it's obvious that our starting front line is set. It's not about the money, it's about the opportunity, and Millsap got a solid pay day for two years as a starter which will leave him in a fine position to negotiate another big contract when this one expires. We're simply not in the market for staring big men (and before someone says "Josh Smith," that's 'cuz, right or wrong, we appear to believe he can be our SF ...)

That would have made Milsap not only the highest paid Piston but the highest paid Pistons EVER.
Is Milsap better than any Piston who has ever played?
If memory serves me we didnt offer that much to Ben Wallace.

It's not so much Paul Millsap... it's what he represents
He's a quality pro capable of being an example to our youth. If you want them to be professionals you can tell them or you can get players here who can show them!
I'd like to see us sign guys that can show them and Millsap was the easiest guy to point to as an example of that
IF we're not going to spend money on quality vets that are entering their primes and can help Cheeks show the kids the way AND we're not landing any "name" players then WTF are we going to do with all this cap space?

I agree but why should we pay these role player vets almost max money?
Hawks are going to overspend on these vet FAs just to get to min salary. I would like to have Milsap here at CV money but not at allstar money.

Getting guys like Millsap and Redick for the next 3 years while we pay Drummond, Knight and K.C.P unders is probably the way to do it.
You can justify the expense this way:
Millsap $10 mil
Redick $8 mil
Knight $4 mil (it's less than that atm)
Dre $4 mil (again, it's less than that)
K.C.P $4 mil (again it's less than that)
Break it down to:
Millsap $6 mil
Redick $6 mil
Knight $6 mil
Dre $8 mil
K.C.P $4 mil
We roll with:
Drummond 30/Monroe 18
Monroe 16/Millsap 32
Singler, Middleton, Mitchell, Jerebko take all the SF minutes
Redick 28/K.C.P 20
Knight 30/
Stuckey plays back-up PG for one season while you try to acquire a back-up PG
I think that's a playoff team with plenty of room to grow if Knight, K.C.P, Monroe and Drummond develop more... and if we could someone find 2 worthwhile SFs out of that group of 4 then we'd be fine at that spot too.
But it's not possible now... I just think there are many ways to skin the cat and going for "names" was the wrong option, trying to get Rudy Gay is the wrong move... but I'm just an arm chair GM

Not understanding the Paul Milsap love here. He's basically a "rich man's Maxiell". He fills literaly no need on our team, and costs a fortune. Pistons should've avoided him like the plague and wisely they did.

Umm, no
No, he's not a rich man's Maxiell - he's so much better than Maxiell the comparison is rediculous
He fills no need on our team? Wrong - beyond Drummond and Monroe we have nothing of quality up front
Pistons should have avoided him like the plague? They did and it wasn't wise. They avoided him because their priorities are screwy and they'd rather sign "athletes" than basketball players that come to work every day and actually put the team above their own egos.
Signing Smith, Iggy or trading for Gay gets everyone interested. Signing guys like Millsap and Redick doesn't move the needle.
One could argue that getting Millsap and Redick makes us a better basketball team both short and long term, while signing Smith, Iggy or trading for Gay actually makes us worse.
But I'm cool with most disagreeing with me on that. If we all agreed it would get rather boring

Re: We couldnt even get Millsap?!??
^I think Monroe and Drummond will be just fine up front by themsleves. So to say beyond them we have nothing, I don't really get that. Considering two great bigs is more than most teams have, I don't think we really need to be investing big money in a third. Sure we could always use an upgrade off the bench, but that doesn't mean its a need. When you have that great of a frontcourt you don't "need" anymore bigs.
What we do need is someone who can defend the 3's and 4's who abused us routinely last year. Right now we have no one to do either. So Smith immediately fills two major needs in those respects. That alone makes him a much better signing than Milsap would've been to me. If Smith finally gives us someone who can defend LeBron by himself without needing help, that's worth a max deal. We've been searching for an answer for LeBron since 2007. I'd say that's a big need that needs to finally be addressed whatever the cost. You aren't going anywhere without going through Miami.
