Time to turn focus to former Piston Aaron Afflalo.

Post#1 » by Dre Drummond » Wed Jul 3, 2013 6:22 am

Orlando is tanking and could want to try to land a big FA or two so its not all that unlikely that Afflalo could be had for a minimal investment.

They've tried to move him in the past.

He's a great defender and can flat out shoot the ball. He's a work horse.

He's a career 38% + shooter from downtown who had a down year slightly in Orlando which could lead to us getting him at a minimal investment...

He's got three years left on his deal at $7.5 million per year so a flat out Stuckey(or CV is they preferred) + 2nd rounder or two swap for Afflalo would actually increase our capspace this year by $1.0 million.

I'm not that high on Afflalo. I think he gets a lot of love here because he was a former Piston who we gave away for nothing. He's a 3&D guy, very similar to Thabo Sefolosha. We don't have that wing superstar where we can afford to go after 3&D guys IMO. They need to do a bit more. I also think KCP will be at worst a 3&D guy so no reason to be redundant.

Agreed plus Joe won't want to look dumb and trade value for a player he gave away for nothing.

I believe I read that Orlando was going to try Oladipo at point guard. So no need to trade Afflalo.

If we could get Double A for nothing more than Stuckey or CV then we should be happy about it.

Never should have dumped him for "extra" cap space when we had $18 mil to spend that off-season! And to make it worse we signed Chris Wilcox with the money!

FFS is it any wonder some people have very little faith in Joe Dumars?

By most accounts Afflalo has checked out after he signed his big contract, do you really want that kind of guy on the Pistons? If you watched him play, he was pretty petulant last year, just what you guys say about Stuckey. Afflalo's defense is overrated as well, he used to try hard, but lacked the athleticism to be elite, now he doesn't even try so hard.

So let's recap: Gets drafted by Detroit, where he gains the reputation as a worker. Gets traded to Denver for next to nothing so we can sign Chris Wilcox.

Plays so well in Denver that they reward his work with a long contract worth in excess of $8 mil per... and then they trade him to Orlando in a deal that nets them Iggy.

On a team that is obviously tanking Afflalo, known for his work ethic, starts to act up and at times publicly shows that he's annoyed at his situation.

Did he check out after signing his big contract?

Or is he merely unhappy with the fact his team is "losing the right way" and that all his hard work is for nothing?

Aa could be a nice piece for cv or stuck. But is he the guy you want as your two for the future? Very average starting sg.
Pistons vs. Warriors in the Finals in 2017 - With KCP hitting a game winner so the Pistons dont get swept.

Never should have let him go and should have given him more minutes. That said, its worthless to go after him now. Doubt he even wants to come back.

As someone who saw every Afflalo Magic game, I don't think it was a case of checking out. It was actually the complete opposite. He cares so much about winning , he was trying to do TOO MUCH, too much shooting, too much driving, he isn't built to be a number one option like he was forced to do on the Magic.

Afflalo is a good defender and shooter, he'd be the perfect starting 2. Kcp should be a 20 minute backup and looks like Knight will get most of point guard minutes. AA would be a great fit. Id offer Orlando Stuckey for Afflalo

I wrote this a couple of days ago on another thread:
'There's a huge caveat emptor attached to Afflalo. He was a great 3D guy for a couple years in Denver, but he's been weak at D for a couple years and his shooting seems to have dropped off a lot too. First the three-point shooting: he shot a crappy 30% from three last year, 39% the year before, with lots of attempts both years. Orl was awful offensively last year so he gets a half pass, but if he shoots 34%--between last year and the year before--that no longer qualifies as a 'good' shooter.

Maybe more importantly, he's been a bad defender the last few years. Here's John Hollinger's breakdown after his last year with the nuggets:
'Defensively he regressed. Badly. Afflalo had a rep as a defensive stopper that helped him get a big contract the previous summer, but all his metrics last season were poor. Synergy rated him the single worst wing defender in basketball, and while his other metrics weren't that bad, none of them painted him as a net positive at the defensive end... Afflalo was overrated as a defender to start -- he's an average athlete and really needs to be competing all out to be a plus at this end. Last season he wasn't.'

All in all, seems like expectations based on his two years as a good 3-D guy should be greatly tempered by his two years as a shot-happy bad defender. He might be nice if we got him for nothing but to me these numbers indicate he's not worth giving up any assets for. And since he was always overpaid-- almost $8m per season over the next two-- for an under-athletic shooter, he'd eat up all of our remaining cap space.'

What about something like this?

Stuckey, Villaneuva for Nelson, Afflalo, 1st (protected top 10 in 2014, top 5 in 2015, and top 1 in 2016).

Orlando clears 2 more contracts after next year and we solidify our guard rotation with guards who are at the very least 6th man type players and could start on a lot of teams. Not to mention they all can shoot the ball. Orlando would only have 2 non-rookie contracts remaining after next season (Harrington & Davis). Orlando might push us to take Harrington or Davis with the trade to clear more salary.

Our guards would be Knight / Nelson / Afflalo / KCP / English / Bynum? / Ellington?

I don't think Nelson or Afflalo are negative assets and they wouldn't have to give up a first to move those guys for expiring contracts. That deal doesn't leave Orlando with a PG either. We know well enough that Stuckey isn't a PG. They're trying Oladipo there but I don't think anyone honestly expects him to be anything other than a SG. Take out the first and value-wise it's not bad (if the Magic were only looking to clear salary for next year) but I don't think it makes a lot of sense for Orlando.

Nelson and Harrington have deals that can be terminated early. I doubt we offer a valuable asset like 2014 draft pick. Affalo, Nelson should be more than enough for this trade, IF we were to decide to trade Afflalo for nothing but capspace.
