I assume it's a case of nobody else wanting to some here - mostly I figure because the presence of Stuckey. Nobody is going to sign on to be part of a four guard rotation, and we have Space Pope, Knight and Stuckey already here. Pope is a 2-guard, and Knight and Stuckey can play shooting guard as well, but so can Singler and the three point assassin is likely to be a 2/3 as well.

I also assume Bynum isn't getting the offers he thought he would in the open market, and Joe can offer him the most money, even if it's just a one year deal so Detroit can better see exactly what it has in Knight and elsewhere. Or we could sign Bynum to a multi-year deal, pegging him as the back-up point no matter who ends up as our long term starter in a years time.

He still shot 45% from the field and made all his teammates around him better... INCLUDING CV!

Will Bynum turns his teammates into spectators more often than he makes anybody better imo.

The thing is once we're a good team (dare I say, once we "play the right way"), Bynum's dominate-the-ball style of play will be virtually of no value. He's a good spark plug when nothing's going right on offense, but he's got the ball in his hand too much instead of running the offense save the time when he lobs it up to Dre.

I've been a proponent of getting rid of Bynum for years, but need to be fair about this:

You guys should remember how great our second unit was for us during a pretty long stretch last season. Bynum, Drummond, CV really got it going. They were dominating the other team's second units playing high energy BB.

We have a lot more athletes on our team this season. Bynum could thrive big time if used that way. And our big men and shot blockers could protect him.

^ This. I understand and respect loyalty. But not at the expense of the team. Time to part ways with guys when they no longer fit. Bynum/Maxiell should NOT be Pistons.

Will Bynum's deal in Detroit is for two years, $5.75 million.

Meh.

Leaves us a little over $5M in cap, and takes us to 15 rostered players.

I mean it's actually really good value $2.87M/year for Bynum, but I was just hoping for somebody new.

Just curious, what about the other 13 guys on the team?

Because we can surround him with outstanding defensive shot blockers and defenders and great above the rim athletes, Bynum's weaknesses are covered with those guys, and his strengths are accentuated. Drummond, Smith, Mitchell all will love his lobs. Singler and JJ love to run. KCP and CV (while we have him) are the kickout outside shooters he needs when he's penetrated into the lane.

Besides, the Pistons aren't done yet. We'll either have Stuckey or another guard that we trade for. And by the trade deadline Stuckey and CV and probably JJ and maybe one of Singler and Middleton will be moved in deals for other assets we can't predict at this moment.

Not overly upset, just mildly bummed.

The years/money aren't terrible. Could have been much worse. Maybe Cheeks gets him to be more of a distributor and less of a scorer?

Brapman wrote:Picture our team grabbing every rebound and blocking tons of shots, and then having a bunch of super athletes flying down the court on the fast break. Bynum is one of the best guards in the league playing at a breakneck pace. Him as a second unit guard on our team as constituted, makes more sense than it did having him for the last few years. It worked great last season with Drummond off the bench. Now we have Drummond, Smith, Mitchell, Singler (major hard working runner), Middleton, and even Knight - guys who can and will play with very high pace.

Bynum on our team could work just great. We aren't asking him to run a traditional half-court offense.

This.

Also i too was unsure at the start of the offseason about keeping Will but with the athletes we have added Smith, KCP and Mitchell i believe he is perfect for us.
