I'm pretty positive we could only afford 2 max contracts and the initial plan was to sign Duncan and Hill. When Duncan passed on us, we moved to McGrady. If I remember correctly, we even had a huge banner made up that had both(and only) Duncan and Hill on it in Magic jerseys.

You have some of the details right but T-Mac was on record saying he would have signed here for less if it meant getting Duncan. I'm sure someone can find an article, if not I will later when I get home.

Fans who r old enough know that gab was trying to sign the 3 of them and if not David Robinson we d have landed they all :-(

But this is history, lets move on

This is a fan forum board, this one in particular of the Orlando Magic.

We get it, you're a realist who likes to spread his/her logic who usually has their homer glasses off.

Though If I was a betting man and McLemore has a "solid 1st game" in Summler League, you'll be biased (just like a lot of us are regarding Oladipo) and be the first to bring that crap in here.

I understand your logic, I do. Though it's becoming a bit redundant to ALWAYS be on the opposite side of praise, more of the lines your thinking regarding Oladipo is usually "glass half-full" when other posters praise and yes, put Oladipo on a peadstool because of a small sample size (two Summer League games). We're FANS, that's we should do. That is, have hope, praise, overvalue, and have high expectations even it doesn't make sense (yet). In this instance, regarding Oladipo.

Love your insight, but just accept the majority that make bold assumptions/opinions even if they do seem pre-mature.

I will not be biased on McLemore, just like I'm not on Oladipo. I'm being as realistic as possible, not on the side of being opposite of praise, in fact, you can check my posts on the Thunder game thread and the summer league thread, I gave Oladipo a ton of realistic praise throughout the day and have done so since he put on our uniform.

*Left hand MUCH better than scouting reports
*Has better dribbling, and at least one go to dribble, the right to left under the leg
*Great court vision after attacking the rim; able to find open man after penetration for easy assist
*Good shot when wide open
*Good form from the 3pt line
*Good at getting to the FT line
*Good at getting steals and being active on defense

All things I said about him, all realistic. Yes, I gave some healthy criticisms too, but they were realistic IMO.

I understand you want to hype him up, I was just joking about the opposite of hating, hence the graphic, and you can say whatever you want about him, I reserve the right to engage in discussion regardless of how realistic opinions may be. There is really no way to be wrong on these guys when talking about projections, that's why I never come in and cut people down, instead, I write my opinion down and converse.

I'd like to discuss how you see him being a top 15 PG next season. Cause I don't see him even starting for at least up until the trade deadline. How do you see that working out?

This is correct, the Magic thought they could legitimately get all 3 for a slightly reduced price.

we would have definitely won at least 3 rings with that core if all stayed healthy. but on the bright side, at least I didn't have to walk around school looking at all the thug kids talking about how they are huge magic "fans". it's really bad with the heat, after they won I get on facebook and see all my friends all happy and celebrating when 4 years ago they didn't know who the heat even were. i'm glad that doesn't happen with us

Just to clear this up once and for all:

From June 30, 2000 in the Orlando Sentinel... OS: The Domino Effect

Tim Povtak of The Sentinel Staff wrote:If free-agent center Tim Duncan agrees to sign with the Orlando Magic -- and there is growing speculation now that he will -- then free agent Tracy McGrady wants to be next in line.

McGrady, the young Toronto forward from Auburndale, will become one of the NBA's most prized free agents, expecting to sign for the maximum allowable $9 million first-year salary in Orlando, Chicago or back in Toronto.

The Magic have cleared an estimated $20 million of salary-cap space, enough to land two star free agents while keeping the core of last season's team intact. McGrady, though, may have to wait and see what free agent Grant Hill decides. Hill and Duncan are friends who share the same attorney. Both are expected to visit with the Magic as early as this weekend. New contracts can't be signed, though, before Aug. 1.

If Hill doesn't join the Magic, then McGrady won't hesitate.

In regards to taking less, it was more of all 3 of them taking less than the money their original teams could offer to retain them.

From July 5, 2000 in Canada McGrady: "My No.1 choice is Orlando."

Like Hill, Duncan and McGrady could sign for $67.5 million in Orlando or $86 million with their respective teams.

Duncan still is undecided.

As for McGrady?

"Money is not an issue," McGrady said. "It's all about being happy and comfortable.

"I don't care how much I make, $67 million or $86 million. You can't spend it all anyway."

One scenario to get all three would involve a sign-and-trade.

The Magic could sign free-agent guard Ron Mercer, and then trade him along with several first-round draft choices and cash to the Raptors for McGrady.

No matter what, McGrady said he won't go back to Toronto, where he averaged 15 points and six rebounds in his third NBA season.

Nice. I will always love Turk. He has sucked recently but without him we dont get to the finals. He will be remembered fondly in Orl.

Yes there was supposedly a plan in place to sign all three if Duncan would have agreed to come. Word is it was his then girlfriend and now soon to be ex wife didn't like it here. Doc's wife had taken her out to show her around and texted Doc saying "You have a problem". And D Rob flying in from Hawaii to call him out didn't help either.

Why not Dallas?

IMO, we want him to go to Atlanta or Sacramento. Charlotte has taken big steps towards improving this offseason - they will not be competing with us at the bottom anymore. Dallas will find a way to win some games...Cuban won't let that team tank. Sacramento has a lot of talent but they are in a much deeper conference and will have more losses because of that. Ellis would help them win some extra games. Atlanta is in the deepest hole right now, which is why I am really hoping they manage to bring in Bynum and Ellis.

He's in the way, It was a trade just to get him out of there and off payroll IMO.
A smart coach once said, "Potential just means you're not good enough yet." Playing on potential is like living on air: It's essential, but if thats all you have, you're eventually going to starve.
