Mavs fan - what should I legitimately expect from Calderon?

Post#1 » by justin962 » Wed Jul 10, 2013 2:40 am

Our PG rotation was terrible last year and our offense was stagnant because of it. In your honest opinion, what are some of the good and bad things us Mavs fans can expect from Calderon?

Thanks guys.

Good offensively.....pounds the rock until someone works themselves open and he gets the assist. Good in PnR. Dependable shooter. Likes to get out into transition.

Terrible defensively.....almost lazy on this end of the floor.

The Good: Great shooter and passer

The Bad: Literally one of the worst defensive guards I have ever seen.

Unfortunately, Jose's offensive game doesn't make up for his defense. He's rarely a net positive on the court and would probably work best with a team that had great perimeter defenders and great defensive bigs. Dallas is not that team. IMO, Collison> Calderon

Good shooter, great passer, horrid defender. Can disappear at times and become useless while still sucking defensively.

i like Calderon overall. His defense is pretty horrible, but he is patient and precise on offense.
Great passer and plays under control. Shoots at a very high level because of his great shot selection.

If dallas get a solid defensive center (bynum maybe??) he'll be a good compliment to Dirk.

I love his flow offensively. Seriously, he's very fluid when the ball comes into his hands. You won't see him turn it over a lot. He's a very good decision maker. However, he's not a risk taker. He'll make the solid play and that's all you can ask from him.

Defensively? He has no defense.

Great passer and real playmaker that respects the coach's system. Shoots at a very high level because of his great (perfect) technical skills and shot selection. He is a sort of living shooting manual.

Very clever guy, great teammate, leader and always respected and appreciated from fans, teammates and coaches
He has a lot of international experiences playing great games with his national team (Medals in Olympic games and Worlds championships).
Great Pick&Pop / Pick&roll player. Perfect for Dirk.

Not terrible on defence, I'd say not good because a bit slow to stay in front of the best NBA PGs.

By far better player than Collison.

Definite upgrade over Collison. Excellent passer and shooter. Below average defensively no doubt. I think a team with bigs like LAC or Detroit he would fit well. I think he will excel in situations were he distributes and isn't force to play hard D. Excell assist to turnover ratio. I think if he improved his defense to average he'd be a potential top ten PG but that won't happen. Decent signing for a team in need of a PG. I think he'll look good with Dirk.

You would probably be better served asking Toronto fans about him. Detroit only had him for roughly half the season, and he spent a fair amount of it on the injured list.

I can tell you he plays matador defense. :D

I personally think he's awful. His best skill by far is shooting. His "amazing" ast/TO ratio is a product of him dominating the ball in a painfully conservative fashion until he finds a very safe pass to make with a few seconds left on the shot clock. For that reason his playmaking is extremely overrated and is actually a detriment imo. His defense is unbearable as well. We went from being in just about every single game to getting blown out brutally on a nightly basis immediately when Calderon took over the PG duties. I'm just happy you guys signed him instead of us.

A whole lot of rock pounding

He is a great shooter and passer but is non-existent on the defensive side of the floor. He is definitely an upgrade over Collison imo.

Calderon is a capable playmaker and master of the pick and roll. He will facilitate the offense and make the sensible pass without telegraphing it. He's substance over style and flash. Caledron also shoots the crap out the ball.

Zero defense.

revolving door on defense. was very impressive shooting the ball, and keeps the game under control so it doesnt get too out of hand, but is nothing special, a safe signing, but is not going to be a huge contributer.

Pros: Good at finding open guys, makes the easy pass, very low turnover rate, excellent shooter
Cons: Plays defense like an old man, and I'm not talking about Uncle Drew

I think he'll be an upgrade over Collison...

I agree with this. Additionally, when I inquired about him when the Pistons acquired him, somebody said he could drive to the basket pretty well. In the games that I watched, he rarely drove to the basket. That was a big disappointment to me. He is not the drive-and-dish player that I had hoped for.

Still, his game might be noticeably better on a quality team (not sure where Dallas will be in that regard next year).

Very neutral in terms of on-the-court impact.

Good shooter, but not very aggressive. Protects the ball well, but terrible defender. Averages good number of assists, but dominates the ball and isn't a great creator.

I didn't dislike him, but won't miss him either. Very "meh".

I think that is unfair of you. Calderon's arrival also meant the loss of Prince, robbing us of our best wing defender, Daye, a cog in our balanced and effective bench (he helped space the floor even though he wasn't super productive), and happened at the same time as the injury to Drummond. This meant that the bench unit was rolling with CV or Slava at center, JJ at pf, Stuckey at sf on occasion...and the the defense of the starting unit declined while their workload increased with the weakening if the bench unit. We basically had no player on the roster who was more than average at best at guarding the position they were forced to guard. I suspect that Jose would have looked better if the entire team wasn't so awful. He probably wouldn't have handled the ball for so long if he played with other half-decent ballhandlers either.
