Monroe is staying put

Post#1 » by AnnArborpiston » Wed Jul 10, 2013 11:50 am

Steve Kyler from Hoopsworld responded to some questions regarding the Pistons' possible trading of Monroe. He basically said it isn't going to happen. Monroe is in Orlando to help mentor the younger players, and they have Sheed working with Monroe and Drummond while down there. He also said we are still interested in Rondo, but not without losing our core pieces. He was chatting with Vince Ellis, and they basically agreed that Josh Smith wants to play the 3, and any Rondo speculation was based off of our expirings, which Boston won't likely ever agree too.

That's good news. Having a low post scorer is always a great thing to have, and including him in a trade for Rondo seems utterly stupid, and short-sighted.

As for Smith playing the three? Awesome. I love mismatches and he creates nightmares for opposing teams.

You never trade big for small, unless your swindling the other team with a bloated contract, or the talent gap is massive. Neither is true in this case.

I don't see Monroe getting traded, him and Drummond are our building blocks. Smith/Monroe Drummond is great defensively, and awesome as far as rebounding and shot blocking are concerned. Offensively, I expect us to play in transition more often but we do need better backcourt shooters

Still remains to be seen if Josh Smith can play full time at the SF. If he lacks the shooting range and looks slow verse quicker small forwards, I think this will have to be revisited in my opinion. I'm not closing the book on this yet but I'm also not saying move Monroe at all costs yet.

People don't realize that Dre does get gassed and sometimes gets in foul trouble. If those happen, smith slides to the 4, Monroe to the 5. Anyone that thinks Dre is playing 42 minutes a night is wrong. He'll be 20 when the season starts and still has a lot of room for growth, which is awesome. Smith will see plenty of time at the 4.

Should not even think about a trade until we get a real look at Smith/Moose/Dre.

Of course we're holding on to a potential all-star :)

We're building a team that can relentlessly pound teams inside - that will dominate the paint with waves of high powered talent. Teams are not going to want to play us when we get in sync.

If Mitchell comes through, then by mid next season, this team will be an absolute nightmare to play. Drummond, Monroe, Smith, Mitchell, Singler, the Italian, Middleton, JJ - (yeah maybe one or two of the bench guys gets traded, but that still leaves us with a very deep roster of big athletes.)

I've got no worries about our frontcourt. As for our backcourt, I am convinced that along with KCP, Knight and Bynum, the Pistons by next season at the lastest will have at least one and probably two new guards on the roster. We'll see how that shakes out, but I like what I've seen so far from KCP, and I like that Knight might be given more time to learn the PG position (and Cheeks shoud be a big plus with all the guards).

Knight/KCP/Smith/Monroe/Drummond

That lineup panning out long term is far better than anything we could get from trading Monroe or Dre. It's kind of annoying that so many other boards think they can get Monroe for scraps, or get Drummond at all.

As I've said in other threads, I think the notion of moving him at least needs to be entertained. There is a little bit of leeway in the "big for small" trade rule when you are facing a possible logjam of talent at the big positions and have a pathetic perimeter like we do, but with a young talent like Monroe obviously the package HAS to be right.

I'm definitely for the notion of at least giving what we have a chance before pursuing moves like this, though. There will always be a market for a player like that and therefor there really isn't any rush.

Sure, entertain it. Treat it to a nice movie and then dinner for a lovely chat. But, seriously, if your GM dinner-date doesn't give us a young all-star guard with a great attitude back, then pretend you're going to the bathroom and crawl out the back window.

We don't have a reliable "4th" big (CV31/Krav/Jerebko are our options) and its clear the Gay & Rondo rumors were attempts to buy low.

Any Monroe speculation I've seen has been fans of other teams thinking we want to sell him for fifty cents on the dollar because they can't fathom Smith playing the 3.

I expect the design is for us to go big and focus on defense and rebounding.

Trading Monroe never made sense. Smith, monroe,Drummond is our future front court to compete for championships. Joe loves having teams built this way. Congrats to joe for finding room to get josh smith this off season.

I agree with you here. If we were able to get a younger rising star like a Lillard type, I think Detroit entertains a move of Monroe. We aren't trading Monroe for Eric Gordon for example.

More interested in keeping him and seeing how our 3 headed big man monster works out. If it works we could have legendary defense. Or it could fail spectacularly. But I want to see it.

Wait, someone actually thought we were going to seriously even contemplate trading Monroe?

I already posted in another thread, but we have a great chance to just sign Rondo in 2015 with Smith recruiting. Probably best to just keep our assets and wait.

Rondo, Smith, Drummond, and Monroe is a lot better than just Rondo/Smith/Drummond. For those thinking that foursome would never work without shooters, who knows maybe by 2 yrs from now Monroe and Dre will both have consistent jumpshots.

or we could get someone better than Rondo.

Its why Monroe/Drummond's development is everything.
