No matter what, we have to play Horford at 4 / Millsap at 3.
It sure looks bad for the home team right now. If Ferry is determined not to re-sign Jeff Teague, we will have thrown away a lot of talent in Smith, Teague, Harris and Zaza. Considering we've added Millsap, hustle players in Carroll and Cunningham, and drafted a, perhaps, too young Schroeder and a potential backup in Muscala, we've suffered a huge talent loss. Maybe Nogueira, Schroeder and Muscala will grow into something nice, but not this year.
We must play Al Horford at PF. Either he can take the next step and be the leader we must have or he can pump up his numbers so that we can trade him. Millsap, on the other hand, must prove he can play SF, both to accommodate Horford and to enhance his value (both to our team and in trade value).
If Ferry is comfortable with a lottery team, we'd better be about the job of maximizing our assets. At the moment, that's Al Horford, Paul Millsap and draft picks (of which I still include Jenkins). The veteran supplemental players are fungible. If the season ended poorly but Horford has elevated his game, if Schroeder has proven he can be our PG and if Nogueira has grown into a pivot, I'll be thrilled. If - on the other hand - we muddle through with Horford as a very good but never great Center, with Millsap as the same kind of PF and with a mess in the backcourt, we will be a team with no future and poor prospects for improvement.
Pardon the rant but things are looking bleak. All the Jennings talk has me depressed beyond my ability to explain. How do I pull for a team so stupid?

The same way we pull for the team that passed on Chris Paul, gave Marvin his 5/40, Joe his 6/135, etc. And that's just the recent history.
Lets be real our FO has never been what you'd call exceptional.

Its a tank move. Ferry could have gotten some quality players in free agency like Jefferson, Iggy, or re-signed Josh and easily gotten 50 wins for the Hawks next year, but that still doesn't get you pass the Heat, Thunder, or Spurs.
I'm glad to see Ferry is not settling for a playoff team, he is looking long term and wants to build a championship team, like what Dimitroff is doing for the Falcons.

Dimitroff drafted Matt Ryan and traded up to get Sam Baker so that the team could start winning immediately. If he had wanted to tank, he would have built up the lines (by drafting Dorsey) and let the team improve slowly. Dimitroff worked to win from the very beginning. His 1st year, the team went 11-5, for crying out loud. Dimitroff has never tanked.
What is so smart about signing Jennings or Ellis? You call it a tank move, explain how they'll make us a terrible team. Either one of them will make us a stupidly-assembled-but-average team. We'll win games with either one; we just won't be good enough to contend. Think about it this way: take Jennings and compare MIL's 2012-13 team with Horford / Millsap / Korver / Jenkins / Lou Williams. With Jennings, we're better than they were last year, we just won't be good enough to matter. Or take Ellis and put him with our guys and compare them to MIL. Same outcome: a team just good enough to make the playoffs.
Tank? That's crazy. We'll stink but we won't be bad enough.

LOL Tcorbin with the "ITS A TANK MOVE" again

its EASY to say "we could have had X Y Z" in FA, but youre assuming Ferry sat around on his ass and just said D12 or bust. Simply not true IMO.
He may have tried and gotten nowhere, we wont know until months from now. You dont exactly want to publicize that FA wont talk to you in the middle of FA now would you?
I think theyll still get a C somewhere. Josh Smith wasnt worth 5 yaers 15+ million, glad we didnt sign him. I view last season as a step FORWARD over the year before. We gut 90 million in salary and stayed the same playoff seed essentially.
This year, we may have to take a step back (which was always the plan) to go forward.
Have faith.
Ferry is filling out what he can get, fielding a semi competitive team, and if the guy we WANT isnt available, we arent overpaying for that roster spot.

Hi Fellas, Jazz Fan here, and I come in peace.
I'm a trully MIlsap fan and I have to warn you guys, I think Milsap will never be a really 3 in NBA. It never works properly for the Jazz. The problem with Milsap is he's an undersized PF who wants to be a starter. He's not quick enough to guard SFs in actual NBA. On the other hand I think he can play PF and mesh very well with Horford at C. Let the team play small ball. You just have to match Teague offersheet and you are set. Not a contending team but a surefire PO team, which seems the direction your FO is looking for.
Sidenote: Great acquisition in Carroll, you guys will be praised with his energy and defense. Jazz fans will be missing him.

Anyone else beginning to lose faith in DF?
If his big plan was to lure top free agents here with all of our cap space, but he is unable to convince any top players to actually sign...well that's bad, right?
Does anyone else wonder if our old team with JJ, Josh and Marvin could have made a deeper playoff run with better coaching?
I mean, we had to be at least as talented as this year's Indy team, right? Even Woody made us a top 3 team in the East.
I have doubts about Ferry. I'll save judgment until we see how his coaching choice works out. But his moves thus far have been a mixed bag.
U guys in agreement with UGA that Milsap can (could) be effective off the bench?

Thanks, RJ. Is it accurate to compare Milsap and his game to David West?
Similar size and skillset?

It's a good comparison. Milsap is a better passer IMO.

Exactly, its the exact same thing Ferry is going to do, get a high draft pick and get a guy like Randle, Wigs, or Parker. look how great it worked out for the Falcons, getting a high draft pick in Ryan, then building through the draft with Baker. same thing Ferry is planning to do, build through the draft.
i'm glad you are not GM, because apparently you have no idea how to do a San Antonio style of tank. what you just said, makes no sense in tanking the same you that you get the draft pick you want

If we really wanted to tank to get Wiggins, we wouldn't have signed Millsap or be going for Jennings or Ellis. We would sign just enough guys to get to the minimum spend threshold on one year deals, have a 15 win season, and then try to draft Wiggins and sign LeBron.
We're clearly not trying to tank, because we signed guys like Millsap and Korver, productive (if limited) players who help you win games.

Horford has star potential. Millsap does not. We cannot base our lineups on Paul Millsap. You win in the NBA with stars; therefore, the single most important thing is the acquisition and/or development of stars. Ferry got lucky with the ping pong balls once. Let's see what he can do with good clay, because that's what we have with Horford, Schroeder and Nogueira.
Maybe I'm wrong about Horford; maybe he is all he'll ever be. But one thing I know: Millsap is no star and never will be.

this is just wrong. Ferry is building an undersized, poor defensive team that is not going to get rebounds and initiate the fast break, guys with short term contract that he won't have to worry about down the line. . in addition he is trying to get guys who have poor shot selection like Millsap and Ellis.
and you just made my point for me. the Hawks HAVE TO SPEND A MINIMUM AMOUNT ON THE ROSTER, as per league rules.
Ferry has money that he HAS TO BURN. and that is why a two year contract is way more important than a 3 year contract. that is why it is much smarter for him that he not only signs guys to an amount that will still keep them tradeable down the line, but he can't keep them on the team past two year, because they are not apart of the long term play. that is why it is smarter to sign Millsap on a two year deal, than Corey Brewer on a 3 year deal.

If I understood what you just posted, I'm sure I'd have a withering response.
However, if you think San Antonio tanked, I'm not sure you have any "idea how to do a San Antonio style of tank," either. Are you saying we need to have a Hall of Fame Center (David Robinson) get injured so we'll lose and draft Tim Duncan?

you are also forgetting Sean Elliott. Spurs allowed Robinson to rest alot longer than doctors recommended, and they way under played Sean Elliott. two all stars that came back full force the next season. and we all know that the Spurs even to this day, loves to rest star players, that is what they do.
remember, Robinson did not have a heal injury or spinal injury, it was just a broken foot. it only takes about 2 to 3 months, not a year, which is how long Robinson sat out.
they also gave short term contract to Nique who was way past his prime and just filling out a roster spot. even Nique will tell you that the Spurs at that time were not concern about winning.

we will see in the beginning of the season if their is a winning streak or losing streak
