Yep, 80s. It's not like Otto is under pressure.
Even if he doesn't come around for 2 seasons, this season it would be great for Ariza to put up monster stats and for Webster to do what he did last season.

I won't feel bad if I miss watching a summer league game or two after this stinker.

We **** up down the stretch in true wizards fashion. I'm not so worried about Porter's efficiency, some jitters developed once some shots stopped dropping. He does however need to add weight. I don't think he'll have a true NBA body until a year and a half from now. That was expected though. Gaines needs as little playing time as possible.

It's one game. That's all. Playing with terrible point guards and he's not a create off the bounce guy. He'll be better tomorrow. I think if we don't see improvement the next 4 games, maybe he'll starting off with few minutes. I'm not thrilled but not discouraged either.

Not having a decent PG hurt. Haynes is the lesser of 2 evils but man, Gaines was bad.

My thoughts are I'm glad Olodipo went #2, he looked good in Orlando.
As to the Wizards, there wasn't a single rotation player on the court today. Ted should refund me my $14.99.

Lots of things for Otto to work on. Strength, quickness, ball handling.
And we haven't even mentioned he couldn't hit from inside or outside.
I know this is one game and the kid is 20 years old- it would just be nice for him to do something to erase the memory of that FGCU game. Didn't happen today.

Because they want to make the playoffs this year and Len is a project. Noel won't contribute much for a year or two. A lot of teams were worried about his knee and the surgery that was performed.

WizKid25 wrote:The best we can hope for with Porter is he becomes a lockdown defender and develops a reliable 3-point shot. Unfortunately, I can't help feeling that we overvalued him. No way we should have taken him over Noel. At this point I hope I'm wrong of course. But I fear that decision will haunt us for a while.
I would hope coaches remind him of that before every weightlifting session, practice and game. He's smart and a nice guy. People like him tend to take being personally challenged well, and turn it into determination. He needs more of that. More eye of the tiger. He's fast, but not quick (in game). He's long, but thin. He's dangerously close to a tweener. Can't beat others off the dribble. Can't post stronger players. Not enough lateral quickness to guard faster SFs. Nice distributing though.
True it's the first summer league game. True we have no point. True that his strengths, and how we will use him, aren't being shown in this game (role player who makes the smart second pass or hits the open j, and plays good team defense). True he's probably nervous playing against real men for the first time. But, a number three pick shouldn't be nervous. He should be hungry to prove he belongs.

I understand those who are choosing to be patient with Porter. But what exactly does he do at an elite level? He's not great at anything as far as I can tell. I mean, they're talking about him having to learn how to run the floor. Really??

Vesley stuffed the stats and had best fg% 6/7/1/3/3/4/6
Trade otto for bennett????
We do need a post presence, and pick and pop 4
We have 2 sf that can shoot and play d
I guess everybody wanted to have a young tyshawn prince...but tyshawn could create his own shot a bit
If porter was athletic like shumpert or strong like butler, could shoot like klay or had offense like parsons...
He said he wwas closest to kd..so maybe this jus a jitters game

Well he was a good shooter in college, and while today isn't really evidence of that I think he'll end up being a considerably better shooter than Ariza. defensively he isn't terrible IMO, just needs to get stronger, but I knew that would be at least take a year to add on good weight. I think he could be a very good rebounder from the SF position, maybe not Leonard good (who is the best rebounding SF I think) but he has top 7 potential in rebounding for the 3 spot. He's definitely not a 2 guard, we shouldn't be asking him to try to take 2 guards off the dribble, that really highlights the averagness of his handles, but I don't think they're terrible. There are other young SFs whose handles aren't really all that great either, Barnes, Leonard, Pondexter.
Its ok to critique, but I guess since its summer, and we're all wiz fans, we have a tendency to tear into w/e negativity we can find.

This was my problem with him from the start and I was killed in the Otto Porter Jr. thread because of this. There's not one thing he does exceptionally well. He doesn't have that one skill or one attribute in which he'll expose the opposition. During the broadcast Wall said Porter has a good mid-range game. IMO the mid-range game is worthless and has basically become extinct because it’s the most inefficient style of basketball there is. Guards and wings must do one of two things very well to succeed 1) dribble penetration, or 2) deep shooting. Porter does neither. If he were the 15th pick in the draft, fine, but it spells trouble when the 3rd pick has no calling card coming in.

I overreacted (what else is new) early with enthusiasm. Otto looked very smooth the first 5-6 minutes. He hit his first two shots, took the ball downcourt end-to-end, played good defense, and rebounded well.
After that he really went into a shell. His lack of strength became noticeable and his jumper left him. His handle got exposed a bit. Uh oh...
If I could go back in time and curb my enthusiastic early posts, I would say this game raised a few questions and wasn't a great game overall.

Otto in this game as others have said, had his weaknesses exposed.
Hopefully, UD, when he's playing with an elite penetrating PG (Wall) and a deep shooting wing (Beal); Otto's midrange can be as effective as that of Hamilton and Prince from around 8 years back.

This is the most ludicrous logic imaginable. Not attributing it to you, 80s. But if they really used the third overall pick on a player with the short-sighted goal of simply making the playoffs next year then that's truly pathetic. The goal should be to build a title contender, not make the playoffs. Not only that, but it became downright counterproductive to then overpay Webster a week after drafting Porter. I wasn't high on Len, but Noel has two elite skills, rebounding and shot-blocking. Those two skills, as well as his ability to run the floor with Wall and Beal, made him a perfect fit. We can make the playoffs with or without Porter next year. Just like we can make it had we drafted Noel even if he had to sit until January. The pick never should have been about next year, IMO. It should have been about the next 10 years.
