Pistons are trying to land rondo

Post#1 » by DETermination » Sun Jul 14, 2013 4:00 pm

http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2013/ ... story.html

The Pistons are interested in acquiring Rajon Rondo, and they'd like to package Brandon Knight and an expiring contract in a deal with the Celtics to get him, as Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe writes in his weekly league roundup. Still, that offer wouldn't come close to prying the point guard from Boston, Washburn notes.

It's not the first time we've heard the Pistons connected to Rondo. Vincent Goodwill of the Detroit News said earler this month that the team would likely be at the front of the line if Boston makes its All-Star available, echoing a report from Ken Berger of CBSSports.com that the Pistons have made their interest clear. Celtics GM Danny Ainge insists he won't move Rondo this summer in spite of the departure of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and coach Doc Rivers, the team's other cornerstones.

Rondo, 27, is recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in late January, and he seems likely to miss the early portion of this coming season. He's locked up through 2015 on a team-friendly contract that will pay him $11,954,545 in 2013/14. Knight is entering the third season of his rookie-scale contract, and the Pistons have a pair of sizable expiring deals to pair with him. Charlie Villanueva and Rodney Stuckey are set to make about $8.5MM each. Detroit isn't planning on using the amnesty clause to get rid of Villanueva, which would allow the team to use him as a trade chip this season.

The Celtics acquired three first-round picks in their trade with the Nets, but Washburn writes that the Pistons couldn't add to Boston's haul of first-rounders. Detroit owes the Bobcats a first-round pick, and the protection attached to it extends through 2016. The Ted Stepien Rule, which prevents teams from trading first-round picks in consecutive seasons, would prevent the Pistons from sending out a first-rounder in one of the next few drafts, but I think they could give up a 2018 or 2019 first-round pick, if the Celtics are interested.

I'm leery of making any move at all for Rondo. If you put him in our lineup, then you concede no long range shooting from the PG position, and we're starting with three core big guys who'll be getting 28-40 mpg each, every game who are not stretch the floor players, either.

In Boston, he had KG and Pierce and Ray Allen who are all-time great offensive players and shooters.

In Detroit, he'd doom us to have terrible floor spacing, unless we make another huge trade (e.g., Monroe for Melo).

Rondo's a knucklehead, and not an obvious fit for our team. Also, coming off an ACL doesn't make me love him more. I'd stay away from him.

I disagree. When you have a chance at a top 10 PG, you go for it. Boston wants to shed salary, we can provide that. Get your checkbook out Gores and let's see what you're made of.

He may be a knucklehead but him and josh smith are great friends so maybe that would change his attitude, also he is one of the best defensive pg's in the league. If we can get him without giving up moose im all for it.

If you do get Rondo for Knight, you've GOT to make other changes here. Maybe you go get Melo for Monroe. But for sure, you've got to surround him with more floor spacers than are currently scheduled to be in our playing rotation.

I'm also not sure how great a defender he is. I think his play on that end of the court is overrated - and that his reputation is a defender is better than how he is in reality.

But, the guy is a ferocious competitor, and it's hard to argue that we're better off with Knight there. Right now, Brandon has a lot to prove. The thing is though, I'm a believer in Knight and am concerned that we'd regret trading him.

Perhaps this is a conversation that we should table until at least the trade deadline, to make sure that we don't fall in love with Knight again by then.

I do think it is best to wait untill the trade deadline, see how rondo plays and how the celtics are playing. But im happy that joe d has been very agressive and had shown that he wants to win now and make some big moves. I also want to see if knight can have a breakout year so maybe holding off on this trade untill the deadline is the best move.

If we're only going to give up Knight + expirings, then I'm okay with it. Just don't move Dre or Moose.

This gotta be Joe's payback for the Glen Davis enquire from a few years ago. When Ainge asked for Maxiell and the pick that turned into Greg Monroe for Glen Davis.

I don't want Rondo. He can't shoot and he's a diva.

Ainge won't deal Rondo for that package. There's simply no chance of it, so debate on this point really doesn't have a whole lot of reason behind it.

Obviously Rondo is an excellent player who would represent a major upgrade, though fit would be a concern, but as I said they simply aren't going to give him up that easily.

I'd rather just pass on him at this point. Dude can't shoot, a crybaby, and who knows how he's going to play without KG and PP. It's better to wait until the trade deadline to see his real value. I predict it will plummet.

I really believe that knight will have a breakout year this season, unless im wrong and he plays bad the first half of the season I would not do this trade. I predict rondo will do worse this season with less talent on the celtics and coming off that injury, his trade value could go down by the deadline also.
