John Wall interview.
http://www.nba.com/video/games/wizards/ ... l-intv.nba
BTW, I hated CSN coverage of the game. Buckhantz doesn't even know the player's names - ie Washington scored or the Warriors scored. He had a relapse of saying the basket was good even though it wasn't- maybe he needs to get his eyes checked. They also went on random talking points about Dwight Howard, Blatche playing with KG- stuff that is ok to talk about but not so much when the game is going on, even if it is the lowest scoring game in summer league history.

That was awesome.
Yeah I know right, he hit the nail on the head with that one !Porter will be fine, every one needs to just calm down, and let porter get in to a grove.

Well, in fairness, we took Mike Pence off their hands. Taking back Mahinmi is the least they can do.

It's not that confusing.
He's supposed to be a defensive PF that can be a weakside shot blocker, cause turnovers by using his quickness to cut off passes, and use his athleticism to be a high level PNR defender that can switch to a guard, stay with the big, hedge, whatever. A hustle guy that crashes the boards, gets out in transition and acts as a finisher.
I mean, funny thing is he already has all these tools right off the bat. He doesn't have to actually learn anything new. He just has to STOP FOULING. He can't stay on the court. That's his problem. He has to learn how to stay down and pick his battles. If he can learn how stay on the court he can be a big help to us.

Re: Wizards Summer League 2013 - Mini Camp 8th Games July 13
Game one did not startle nor upset me. Porter moved well, got to open spots, rebounded well enough, good technique and effort and positioning and instinct. We know he's skinny and we know where he'll need adjust but the interest in Porter to me was less that he's instantly ready to dominate, and more that he's able to adjust. And will improve. And will continue to improve. This player was drafted for his eloquent coding not the power of the mainframe.
I can see where he will be able to hit his shots and have an effect, use screens, swing the ball to the cutter when he's stopped. He's an ideal 3rd option, where on this squad he was the focal point.
Of more concern to me was the fact that Rice did not start, and a bunch of players posted a DNP in a loss. I was curious to see baby Booker, who has a ton of athleticism. Made me wonder if any players (Rice or others) broke team rules taking in the bright lights and big _itties, um, big City of the capital of Sin, USA.
But that is reckless speckleation. And I liked how Rice found his spots even if he didn't assert himself aggressively. I saw how some nights all of those shots are going to fall. Smooth by happenstance, flings it up with confidence and throws a pretty arc.
I did like the defensive effort given by the squad. Vesely in particular always looks nice when he's not physically overwhelmed. I KNOW the Spurs could turn him into a useful defensive stopper, blanketing the perimeter, then recovering to at least impede a drive if not intimidate or swat shots away. But since we have a former Spurs defensive guru, maybe we can squeeze some utility from him. I just wish he had a better shot, in many ways, in many ways.

He'd be a good hustlef*ck SF too if we had a solid stretch four to draw the bigs to the exterior and let him swoop in for a back door finish. A 'crash forward' like I termed it. His length and activity would cause many problems for smaller 3's, on both ends. And if he could learn to stick his feet and euroflop then he could even cause frustration for the LeBrons and Carmeloes of the league. He just needs repetition and confidence.
A total management failure that he never got time at the DLeagues. We need a our own team. Baltimore beckons, Mr Leonsis. Tap into that PG County talent. Siphon the best streetball we can get from the DMV 'err-ea'. Put mambo sauce on the cultural map. Theys cats would be ecstatic to cash even one $500 paycheck for working their hustle on a DLeague team. Do this, Mr Leonsis. Get it right.

Ves CANNOT defend bigs b/c he's physically abused when they back him down. He has no functional strength. He's a total bust. Just end the madness and don't play him. Trevor Booker is better in every facet of the game.

Wow, how wrong you are! Except for Drummond, who looks like he'll be a superstar.
If you look at rookies who played at least 1200 minutes, only 3 guys had a better WP48: Drummond, Prigioni (who came in a veteran!), and Anthony Davis. Beal wasn't close, Lillard (despite being RoY) and Barnes weren't as good as Beal, and for my money Waiters isn't even a good player.

If I'm correct Vesely's agent was adamant about him not going to the DLeague.

Let's be honest, Vesely probably is just cashing those paychecks and waiting to return to Prague. He can either play in the NBA and be a national embarrassment, or he can return to the Czech Republic where he's the Soviet Lebron James and bang Eastern Bloc supermodels every night and drink potato vodka. What's his motivation to do well here?

Agreed. I think Markieff would be a nice add. I liked him as one of the options for the Wizards that year. I think that kid is going to be solid for years to come. Maybe never a huge star, but a good player. He has some skills and nice size.
Good to see them playing together again. That should help them both get it going.
Wish we could have landed CJM. He will be in the running for rookie of the year.

I think it's very possible if he had the right coach/player combo he'd turn out better than a bust. What he needs is a huggy, positive support system where he doesn't get yanked when he screws up. Lots of players like that, you have to figure out how to reach them individually, and not just apply the same tactic no matter who it is, even a hard --- like Lombardi was willing to listen to Bart Starr's criticism and adjust his technique w/him to get the most out of him in his first year w/the packers, or Jerry Kramer who he ripped to pieces, then whispered in his ear, "You could easily be the best tackle in the league in a year or two".
I definitely think there's a point to make in regards to confidence w/the kid, he'd be at least competent, and not a total bust if he had a better support system, alas that is not here.
I don't think this game tells Porter's story by a long shot, just underlines my preexisting opinion to him from day one, a guy who doesn't do virtually anything great, especially the most important things, and is likely to have been way way way overdrafted, and a colossal mistake w/Noel still available and some other guys I liked too. I continue to pin my hopes on his mental make up, work habits, approach, and BBIQ to go w/his length. Maybe, just maybe, those assets can make up for the major issues I have with him.

Vesely is weird. He's not skilled but he clearly has basketball IQ. He was actually talking on defense today playing at the 5. He was very competitive.
I just wish he had a skill that would make him useful. I was shocked to see those Dirk type shots today. But yeah he needs to be confident.
We still should decline his option on Halloween.
He was never a low post player and we moved him to the post.
His body is stronger, but he still doesn't seem to get the whole holding your position thing. He gets position. But he doesn't have that mind set to understand he needs to either anticipate someone is going to try to push him out while his back is turned or that he needs to spot that person and bump them before they bump him. As such, he gets push off balance because he isn't ready for the contact.
As a player the ran in the open floor most the time, he doesn't seem to have to instinct to focus on maintaining his center of gravity as a top priority.
He needs to learn to use his butt and hips to bump players. As a wing, he doesn't know that part of the game. Wings need to learn to get separation and move around a lot. So do post players but wings can do it with their arms, feet and ball-handing. Post players usually need to use their arms and their hips more.
So he has the length and enough girth to do it, he just doesn't know how to do battle down there. But again, he was a swing transition player. He never learned how to get position then banging while staying balanced. He seems to think getting position is enough. Playing in the post is a totally different skill set.
Maybe he doesn't like all the contact. Everyone isn't cut out to do battle in the post.
It might be a case of to late for Ves. Had he come to the Wizards as they are now for his first year, I think he would be farther along. He really needed more structure around him then he had. Changing position on a changing team and they changed his shot. To much change for a project like Ves was.
I think you nail it. He has good basketball IQ. But he lacks the skills of a post player or the shooting skills of a wing. But since he likes to dunk, you think they could get him to buy into being a post player. I think he would be happy if he could get lots of rebounds, two dunks a game from weakside passed and get the offense started with outlet passes. That alone with a top of the key set shot, and I think he would enjoy the game. Maybe even a high light from a pump fake, one dribble dunk.
That would be a nice game for him and I could see him early enjoying himself out there.

Considering the Colin Cowherd love, you might want to rethink, considering he wrote off John Wall as a loser who would never win anything because of the Dougie in his first start, repeatedly referred to RG3 as a runner and not a thrower, despite mountains of evidence to the contrary, and despite my love of Luck (who I still prefer to RG3 long term and always did), his analysis of the Colts versus the redskins is ludicrous. He sees the Colts winning the AFC because of the Luck factor, conveniently ignoring the metrics that he touts, when they back his arguments, and ignores when they don't (as in the Colts won a statistically unsustainable amount of close games in '12, and that their phythagorean win total was also essentially the statistically least likely and most improbable playoff run in decades). Oh, he also continues to support LeBron's "The Decision," and to misrepresent its critics as idiots who can't handle a free agent leaving a team (conveniently forgetting that fans have been coping with free agent departures for 20+ years, it's players having a 30 minute special dedicated to capturing the moment that you "take your talents to south beach (i.e. the greatest example of self-aggrandizing delusional thinking since Wall Street started crying about not being loved after destroying the economy, and then getting bonuses for it, and being paid off by the gov for it, but that's another story).
I could go on and on, I love his show because sports talk tends to be massively redundant, and sometimes completely unlistenable, while other times being monstrously tedious. His show is never either of those things, but I have a problem with his misrepresentation of himself and his arguments (picking and choosing philosophies with the pretense that that is how evaluates anything, rationally, only to abandon them when they aren't conveniently for a particular contrarian take he makes to drive up ratings.

And now thats what is really all about.
Move this or move that. We have Wall and Beal. Beginning and end of the story really. The rest if just about adding talent around them and finding the right 3rd long term wheel in the front court. Otto isn't that wheel. Need to be Nene or better. But for now, its Nene and that is pretty good.
At the end of the day, you need one or two of the best players at their positions on the floor. Well Wall turned the corner. And now he is ready to just go nuts. Easily ready to be a D Rose. He is going to carry the team all by himself. Now add Beal who is the real deal.
Sorry but that combo might be the best in the league for a good while. That has the potential to be ELITE
Better then GS with Curry and Klay.
Better the D Rose and ?? who
This team can go as far as Wall and Beal take them. And they are just getting started. The team is getting set up to add their third younger front court stud if Nene doesn't snap back.
Add a Bosh, Favors, Monroe, Asik, Gasol, etc, and they will be off the the races.
Not even really worried about Otto. He is a glue guy 4th wheel to a line up like that.
Nothing happening in this SL really matters. These are just fringe player tryout and Otto getting his feet wet.
This team is about Wall and Beal and how young they are. We have a big window.
