LOS ANGELES — The NBA fined Portland's Scottie Pippen $10,000 for throwing an elbow at former teammate John Salley late in the Lakers' Game 4 win Sunday.

The fine was announced before Tuesday's Game 5. Lakers coach Phil Jackson was lobbying for a suspension.

"Are you guys aware Pippen threw a punch in Sunday's game?" Jackson asked reporters. "He hit Salley in the back of his head. Obviously he should [be suspended]. Brian Shaw missed a game."

Said Portland coach Mike Dunleavy: "No big deal. He can afford it."
