I can't think of a free agent that I'd want to crack our regular rotation. OKC is better off saving their money in order to have more flexibility under the luxury cap for potential moves later on.

There isn't any flexibility under the cap... at this point they're just trying to manuever to stay under it. There isn't going to be any additional help coming unless a really random trade comes out of nowhere. Really hope Lamb and Jackson are ready for this!!

IF the young guys can't score look for Orton to be waived and then two vet min guys to come in. I think Orton has been working hard and deserves to be kept on, although 4+2 centers doesn't make sense.

At this point we can't sign a 3rd pg, keep Orton, and stay under the lux cap, right? I don't see, especially with Russ coming off an injury, us going without a 3rd pg... so Orton is cut almost by default, unless he's worked hard enough to pass up Thabeet.

If we waive off one of the unguaranteed contracted and offer to extend them for another year (next year partial guarantee for whatever amount we reduce from this year) we might be able to get a 3rd PG.

Luxury tax is 71.7m, how far away are we? Storyteller has us at 70.65m that seems enough for one veteran minimum signing.

example:
Say we're 800k under cap, a vet will count 900k towards cap.

unguaranteed orton contract(900k this year 1m next) resign him for 800k this year and 1.1m next year with 200k guaranteed next year.

Yup, this is about right. I still don't know if they keep four centers though, I'm thinking there's gonna be a cut and another 800 k freed up. Don't know though.

anyone seen anything about this?
that's leaving around 200k-300k on the table for a rookie.

Isn't salary prorated anyway? Does Liggins/Thabeet/Orton salary has a cut off date that we have to cut if not it become fully guaranteed? Can't find it on any salary page update but maybe the league has a cut off date that they guarantee everything.

Hm interesting, and odd for a rookie. Don't know about cutoff dates, may have a research project for myself now!

If you would google it, Bulls tried to do something similar with Marquis teague (less than 120%) and spurs did it a few time as well. Anderson/Hill. And New Orlean failed to do it with Henry/Vazquez

http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q62
In addition, on January 102 the base salary in all contracts becomes guaranteed for the remainder of that season (except for one case -- see question 65). A player must clear waivers before this date, so teams have to waive players by 5:00 PM Eastern Time on January 7th in order to have them off their rosters before January 10.

So that's until December at least. Might as well hold on to their salary and waive if need slot for the minimum.
