Re: OT--General Health

Thanks guys, after my dentist told me to use a "warm compress" and do nothing else I went to a doc today who said that it's too sudden to be TMJ but it's one of the following: i)a partially blocked saliva gland (apperently this is almost like a kidney stone for the gum/jaw line and could require surgery ii)an infected gland/lymphnode or iii)adult mumps. They put me on some anti-inflammatories and anti-biotics and took blood to rule out adult mumps (apparently in males this has the side effect or enlarging your testes--not kidding) and I'm supposed to follow up next week.
If it's not better and it's not mumps the next step is either a referral to an oral surgeon or an ENT, so you guys were pretty much spot on, thanks again for replying. I love this thread, probably b/c someone in my family is always sick.
Add abscessed tooth & myofacial pain to the list of possibilities--the abscess appears to be highly doubtful--anyone have any experience with myofacial triggers? I was always under the impression that much of the medical community were non-believers.
Dumseld, appreciate the advice, will try the K & vitamin; also any chance I can talk you into changing your name?
Sure. With the Vesley pick, three 2nd round picks in the past two years and absolutely nothing to show for them and now the Ariza Okafor debacle, I think it can be argued that Grunfeld has been a worse GM for us than even Unseld. I will see if I can change my name to Dumfeld.

Injury advice, and I use the term "injury" loosely--what are the odds that a charlie horse comes back in the middle of playing ball? I had the charlie horse yesterday, I can still feel it there but it in't hitting me but I don't want to look like a total idiot or screw up our big rec league playoffs by not getting a sub instead of trying to play if it's likely to come back.

Re: OT--General Health
Ok, I hit you all up with a random health question before & it proved helpful. I had a slight headache Friday night. When I awoke on Saturday it was worse and it really hurt to move my eyes and my head (quickly). I've been to an urgent care center, they treated it as a migraine and gave me a shot of toradol (souped up Advil); I passed out but I awoke with the same headache & eye issues. I've been to the eye doc who found nothing wrong but switched me to a different med just in case it was a concussion & there was internal bleeding. The next step is a neuro but that's several weeks away. It appears that it's either a concussion or a mild migraine with this strange eye issue. I can't find any treatment for either other than rest--has anyone else encountered anything like this? I did take a blow to the head Thursday playing ball but it was mild and the first sign of anything was a slight headache Friday night.

Migraines can cause symptoms like the eye issue you describe. Any sinus issues (clogged sunuses, ear ducts, etc.)? Does it feel worse if you lean forward? Sinus headaches can become as bad as migraines, with similar issues, again including the eye issue. Both can be set off or aggravated by a blow to the head.
You have a GP? Sometimes a GP will spot something just because they know you and likely created most of your recent medical history. Don't take lightly, even if it initially clears up. Follow up on possible concussion.

Thanks Monte, it definitely hurts to lean forward but if it's sinus it's very well hidden everywhere else ie no chest, throat or nose issues.
I'll try a decon tonight just to see if it has any effect.

Visceral fat or subcutaneous fat? Belly fat can be unsightly or pretty detrimental to a middle aged man's life expectancy.

B. dealing with some shooting back pain when I step on my right heel (sciatica I believe) anyone else deal with that yet?
C. Anyone using any supplements that they really like? I know many have side effects but not all do & I really like some of them.
I get sciatica related back spasms. There are stretches you can do -- lie on your back with your legs resting on a wall, with one leg straight pull the ball of the straight leg toward you with a yoga strap for two minutes, twice a day.
Also go to a good chiropractor -- sciatica problem might be caused by something seemingly unrelated, like a stiff neck -- my sciatica problems have gone down significantly since I've been getting my neck adjusted at the chiro. Also, a good chiro will also have as good advice as anybody about what supplements to use.

Re: OT--General Health
Knight, I've only seen calcium for that but I have seen that calcium may not work as well as they thought (sorry),, vitamin D was also thrown in there.
Zonk, thanks, I have it from time to time but a firm mattress has helped.
Strange eye issues and headaches are still there which seems too long for most migraines, symptoms have improved but they're far from perfect.

Vitamin D and calcium work together to help bones. Also, moderate impact activity (such as running or aerobics, but not swimming or biking) helps to increase bone density.

I was under the impression that weight training was a key for bone density. That's a major reason why older folks are encouraged to do dumbbell exercises.
My brother tells me he wants to work out with me because working out with dumbbells is good for him.

Re: OT--General Health
My metabolism has ceased to exist. I am still doing rigorous exercise 2-3 times a week and lesser exercise 1-2. Any suggestions that aren't cross-fit style extreme?
