Cubs and Rangers Trade
They want Garza, need LF help, and could use a backup catcher who can hit.
Garza, Villanueva, Soriano, and Navarro for
3B Mike Olt, OF Jairo Beras, SP Justin Grimm, and SP Luke Jackson.
We will need to kick in some cash for Soriano but it helps Texas win now, and gives us some more young talent. We also get a potential 3B, RF, SP's of the future.
Olt is blocked in Texas. Beras is on bad terms since he lied about his age. Grimm is having a rough year but is 24 and has some potential. I like Jackson a lot and think he could be a future Ace.

Mike Olt is 25 with a .312 OBP in AAA. I don't think anyone should view him as the 3rd baseman of the future. Plus, Valbuena has been really solid at 3rd. With Baez, Castro, Alcantara, Bryant, we have a bunch of options for the future there.
I like Jackson too. I think I'd prefer to build a package around Martin Perez and Jackson as the main pieces, mainly because we really need pitching. Especially if Garza is being dealt.

Heard on the radio that they'd rather trade Profar than Perez in a deal for Garza (if at all). Perez is off the table.

Perez was the guy I initially wanted instead of Grimm. Now I dont feel like we can get him.
If they want to give us Profar well sign me up a 20 year old who is already in the majors ... YES!
I will still take Olt, he is having a down year but he has 4 years in the minors with OBP of 400.

Garza is a good pitcher and I like him alot. He will be 30 next year and a Free Agent. He will likely get a 4-5 year deal for 15-17 million a season. Right now 3 young players who will be under our control for the next few years would be better for the cubs.

Garza for Olt, Neil Ramirez and CJ Edwards.
If they were going to do Olt, Edwards and Jackson I think I would take it. Right now I dont feel we are getting enough for him.

It's not a matter of getting enough... it's a matter of making a dumb trade just for the sake of making a trade. Olt is the best part of the package Texas is offering. Last time I looked, the Cubs don't need another AAA third base prospect. Olt can also play DH and first base. the Cubs don't need a DH or first Baseman either. Can Olt play outfield? Who knows? If you want an outfielder, you should trade for an outfielder rather than trying to convert a 26 year old third baseman into one. A review of Olt's minor league record will reveal nothing special and only one really good year.. this year he has reverted back to being above average. in my opinion, Vitters is already better than Olt. I'd also rather have an infield with Baez, Bryant, Castro and Rizzo than one that included Olt.
I can understand why the Rangers like Garza. But if the Cubs trade Garza, trade him for somebody you actually need.

Wow....
You mean like a getting a 21 year old pitcher like CJ Edwards who has a career 1.60 ERA in 31 starts? That seems like he could be a useful player.
How about if we Luke Jackson a 21 year old with a 2 ERA this year?
Mike Olt has been a top prospect for 3 years. He had a good 2010 and 2011. He had a great 2012. He is just blocked on Texas. If traded he will be the starting 3B on the Cubs for this year and next. I like his chances to be a lot better the Luis Valbuena.

Hoping we can add some prospects back in the deal to get profar and Jackson. Don't really see us wanting olt as the biggest part of the deal

Re: Cubs and Rangers Trade
I'm okay with keeping Garza if that was the best return possible.
Even if he leaves in FA, we'll get a 1st round pick as compensation. That prospect will probably be better than any of the guys Texas was offering.
If he doesn't leave, he'll be a little overpaid like all FA pitchers. But the Cubs have been saving money for three years now, and have a ton of cheap labour on the way with our young bats. Plus considering the lack of options in the minors, we shouldn't just be giving away quality starters.

Re: Cubs and Rangers Trade
Olt, Edwards, and a PTBNL. Sounds like it was the best offer on the table but pretty underwhelming overall even though Olt is considered their "top prospect". I would assume Olt would be brought up and given a chance to play everyday at 3rd in the near future???

Re: Cubs and Rangers Trade
Edwards is interesting. Might be our best pitching prospect immediately, though that says more about our system than him.
Olt is starting in Iowa. Apparently the PTBNL could be interesting, something like Odor, Sardinas or Ramirez.
