I always thought that there i logic to pay cuts in some places, moreso for role players than superstars, but the same still applies.

When you retire, things like appearance fees and other job opportunities are based on your resume, not what you earned.

Imagine Steve Kerr got paid more to be a starting PG on a bad team instead of a spark off the Bulls/Spurs bench. He'd probably have a lower 3pt% (no gimmes), no rings, but maybe he would have earned $25 mill instead of the $15 mill he did.

But he has had many opportunities in broadcasting, a GM role, etc - because he is a champion, is the greatest 3 point shooter of all time, and could do the appearance circuit for the rest of his life, just answering questions about the Bulls and Michael Jordan.

Jason Kapono could have stayed with us for less money, but chose the raptors and the bigger money. He is 5th in 3 point%. If he'd stayed in Miami, maybe he would have been the perfect SF compliment for our Bron PF lineup. Would have had a million gimmes, could be a 2 time world champion (maybe 3 - who knows), and could be the all time leader in three point %. Probably would have made only $15 mill instead of the $28 mill he's made, but think of all the opportunities he would have to go to schools, conferences, talk about the Heat and open himself up to other basketball opportunities. Now, noone is going to remember him. Didn't play last season, hardly played the season before.

Lebron, Wade and Bosh can reach the heights of NBA lore by skimping on 4-5 mill per season in their next contracts (maybe $12-15 mill total) - but the difference between 3 titles Lebron and 6 titles Lebron in GOAT and just a top 10 player. Jordan has a 9 figure shoe business with Jumpman from being the greatest, How much is the next retired top 10 superstar making in shoes sales 10 years+ after retiring? Next to nothing. There is big money outside of NBA contract for these guys in staying together.

Since Dalembert is going to Dallas doesn't that mean we can make a play at Brandon Wright?

Why no love to the Summer League dudes? Heat need to add new blood.

Ira persists with the "Joel Anthony is next" to be traded...if that involves giving up our 2014 First, I say no thank you. that draft class is loaded. If we can make it happen without giving up that pick then I am all for it.

If we assess the roster in terms of building some younger players that can contribute when we usher in a new supporting cast I think we would need to designate 2 of the 3 remaining roster spots for young/developmental players. Varnardo, Ennis/Clark and Camby/Oden. Although in reality, as seasoned vets get left out in the cold (from an offer standpoint) in August and September, I think it will be hard for Riley to resist surrounding the end of our bench with proven vets. Players who are receptive to limited minutes but in short stretches have something left in the tank.

I'm pretty sure we can't trade the 2014 pick anyway because we already owe Cleveland the 2015 pick. Steipen rules.

We could trade the Philly conditional pick. But that's likely to be better than ours at some point. Next summer though we may not want the pick cap hold if it is end of the first.

Philly pick isn't that great unless Philly makes the playoffs

Joel is due 7.6 million over 2 years, but we can add 3.2 million in cash, so his salary would essentially only be 2.2 million a year for 2 years. Given Greg Stiemsma (great defense, no rebounding or offense) signed for 2.7 million, I'm sure we can easily dump him without giving up any draft picks.

And I think we will, if we pick up either camby or greg oden.

Is Camby even being pursued? I hope not.

Anyway, if we dump Joel, that leaves 3 open slots, not counting Varnado. I'm not sure how we fill that many slots without losing cap room next year.

1 year minimums. There's a decent enough crop of guys out there.

We have to get under the cap for 1 year to reset the repeater tax so we have another 3 year run.

He spouts a load of "opinion" then he backs down on it denying that was ever his position, then he says he'll never talk about it again, then he does, then he makes a calming gesture. He's harmless but probably not been drunk for about 40 years.
