Wizards hire Frank Ross (from OKC)

Post#1 » by TGW » Thu Jul 18, 2013 11:03 pm

[Tweet]David Aldridge: Wizards will hire OKC East Coast scouting director Frank Ross to become Washington's director of player personnel, per league sources. Twitter @daldridgetnt[/Tweet]

A step up from East Coast scouting director. Hope it helps because our draft picks outside of the top 5 have been pretty bad.

The first question that came to mind was - who hired him? Ernie or Ted?

Nice. This is the type of move we all call for on a regular basis. My guess would be this is a Ted move.

Another step in the right direction.

I've never understood what a Director of Player Personnel does, exactly. I.e. how does what he is going to do upgrade us?

Not being skeptical -- just ignorant.

I was thinking similar. I have no idea if this is a good hire or not. Anyone have any youtube highlights?

Michael Jordan's brother got the same position- IIRC the position is supposed to be for internal player development.

To me this sounds like a pre-Designed Tanking Season in the works.

I expect Webster to spin a lot of time on bench for Porter, and Rice replacing Beal. Wall doing a lot more sitting on bench next season. Nene injury which will put Jan there over KS. yeah.

Well somebody had to replace Ed Tapscott.

We have nowhere to go but up when it comes to "player development" I hope this ends the DNP'S over time in the D-League.

Ahhh... so maybe this hire means that Tapscott in fact will wind up head of the players association.

I'd be happy for anything that got him out of our FO, but I can't easily remember another case where a management guy winds up running the industry's union. Can you?

Not sure where I posted it, but they mentioned they wanted to add another person like this 3-4 weeks ago.

It may have been in a Ernie interview. I can't recall exactly.

If this means Tapscott is no longer part of the Wizards front office, then it's great news indeed. Tapscott is a quality guy, real nice in person, but I had little confidence in his ability to perfom his job at a high level. I still remember sitting behind him a few summer leagues ago and watching him take notes during the Wizards game. He wrote approximately five or six words within the first two minutes of the game and didn't write a single thing down thereafter. Welp, at least he brought out the notebook pad & pen to try.

Welcome Frank, you have had a very low bar set for you. Just try not to trip over it, lol.

I wonder how Nivek feels on this? He used to have convos with Ed and he may have some insight on this hire.

Hey Mike Lee, where did Tapscott go? There appears to be a knowledge/reporting gap about this hire until it becomes official. Ross has the same title Tapscott unless Tapscott has a new position title. I just hope Tapscott is gone.

Well, Tapsott was an Abe-era guy and Ted's loyalty to incumbents could mean that this was Ernie's first chance to get somebody else in that spot. Definitely like the hire, similar to when Ernie plucked a younger Thibodeau away from Boston (and this time there's no EFJ to mess it up). Could see a couple more since some other spots are open IIRC.
