Atlanta Hawks to sign Pero Antic

Post#1 » by Beorn » Wed Jul 24, 2013 10:19 am

According to his agent, mirko raznatovic FYROMian F-C Pero Antic has agreed for a one-year deal with you. :o

He's 6'10', slow footed big with legit 3pt range, tough but bad defender, without a post game. He played for my team in Europe the last couple of seasons, and I'm absolutely shocked that he's going to play in the NBA.

Let's wait the details (two years with option on second year for the moment)
Maybe his contract is not guaranteed at all before the start of the season, until he proves he can fit the team.

He is a poor man Boozer, same kind of game, even more jumpshooting and fake toughness.

They even look alike :D
If Hawks already wanted big man they could offer same contract to Marjanovic from your SL team, would be much better choice agewise. Now you have a guy which can score only from dunks(Nogueira) and inefficient jump shooting big with almost zero post game.I dont expect him to play more than 10 mpg.

He may be a bit slow but with his experience and toughness I think he's still a better option than Oden for a one year contract

If your options are Marjanovic and Antic, you're either a low-level Euroleague team or in big trouble :P

I'm familiar with his game and have watched him a lot.

He was the 2nd best player on the Macedonian national squad that finished 4th in Eurobasket 2011. Along with Bo McCalleb, Antic carried an anonymous Macedonian squad to the Eurobasket semi-finals, and had victories over Croatia, Lithuania, Greece, Slovenia...

This guy did extremely well against Kostas Koufos and Bourousis (one of the top Euroleague centers), and dominated them to some extent when Macedonia beat Greece. So he can definitely hold his own against NBA caliber centers.

He can play the 4 and 5, and is also a decent shooter. He's also a decent 3 point shooter.

He shouldn't be too bad for giving you 5-10 minutes per game, as a 3rd backup big.

I did watch nearly all these games too, and you're right he was the second best player behind McCalleb regarding personal stats, but I'm not sure he was the first or second best impact. I don't remember these games enough to have details about when they were dominating, if Antic was always involved.
And some players shine when a main role is offered, but failed to be efficient in backup role.

Even if I can't remember enough of Antic play, I'm sure he's on another level than Muscala.

We need to know the numbers now to get what room is left.
At this moment, it's a bit less than 7M, so if he signs for 2M, it leaves 5M+0.5 from one deleted roster spot, so 5.5M

It can be important in the Oden offer (he's supposed to come tomorrow to ATL, so Antic signing should not change the Oden interest).

I think it was as forgone conclusion that Bebe was going overseas, I'd still like Muscala to play for us and have some D-League stints like Mike Scott last year.

This is a solid move at just 1 year guaranteed, Antic can provide some depth and he can stretch the floor at times when needed. Not a bad move by Ferry

..and there's a reason Olympiacos let him go instead of renewing his contract. I'm Greek and an Olympiacos fan ;)

Have to say that I'm a little surprised at the reaction on this. No, I wouldn't expect there to be an outpouring of enthusiasm, but no one can argue that Ferry is leaving any stone unturned in his quest to find guys who can give competent minutes at C. Now, I don't expect Antic to even play 10 minutes/game. Basically, I think the rotation would be Horford (36) / Milsap (32) / Brand (28) leaving nothing left over for the 4th big outside of injury, foul trouble, and garbage time. Still, Ferry is showing that he'd prefer to have a better 4th big now (and probably in the future as well...) than giving some a spot so that he can prove his worth.

More than anything, this is a message to Nogueira and Muscala that just because Ferry spent a pick on them doesn't mean he's the best guy that Ferry can find a guy for the money. If Nogueira or Muscala wants to play in the NBA, then they can't rest on their laurels - they have to be good enough to prove that they'd be productive members of the roster before Ferry would be willing to burn a roster spot on them. Good, bad, or indifferent, this is what this signing means more to me than anything that Antic would actually offer.

Well, _ I _ am an expert on Antic, considering I've watched 2 whole videos on him. He seems to have a good body, nice length, good heft, intelligence but with a severe case of White Man's Disease.

6'11" heavyweight who can't jump - maybe he's Zaza.
My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

He is not Zaza or Boozer. He is a poor mans Sam Perkins. He is OK though nothing special and on a downside of his career. But he has some expireience and played a vital role for Macedonia when they came out of nowhere to reach the semifinals in EuroBasket 2011.

His size can be tough to match down low if he gets there :) But don't listen to greek fans, most of them hate him just for being Macedonian.

it's hilarious that hawks signs him=) totally lacks nba atleticism and toughness. grand flopper and ineffective shooter.

anyway it's fun to watch him if he gets any minutes.

I've nothing against him for his nationality, jus for his erratic play ;)
In his last 2 seasons, he played crap from October to April, but he stepped up in both Euroleague Final Fours we won the last couple of seasons

Anyway, most people's reaction when they read the news this morning was like this

I have 0 familiarity with this Antic fellow, but this definitely indicates that Coach Bud and D Ferry believe Nogueria and Muscala need strength training and Further development of their skillset. European Leagues offer better competition and training resources than the D-league. They will probably play one more season overseas and come back next year ready to contribute.

Antic Sounds like his skill set fits what we are looking for in Bud's system, plus he has plenty of experience playing in high pressure situations. But I miss Zaza. Pachulia would have snglehandedly legitimized our frontcourt with his size and strength.

Return to Atlanta Hawks
