2014 Free Agency

Post#1 » by Barkley6 » Wed Jul 24, 2013 6:39 pm

We've all heard the talk from Suns fans and management about keeping cap flexibility and attempting to clear as much salary as possible for 2014. However, this is a little concerning to me because I don't see many players that are reasonable and worth the cash for Phoenix. There is a definite 'superstar' class, one or two players on the next level down, and then everyone else. So, if the Suns are able to clear the cap space we'd like them to, who do you think the Suns should pursue?

I think if we take this year to develop talent and then are able to get a great player in next years draft, we shouldn't look to add any big free agents. Just some vets to help the young bloods. Give the team some experience and players to look up to. Maybe the Matrix?

We should keep the cap space open in order to be a team that can pick up assets from teams looking to dump contracts, like we did by getting Bledsoe (for taking Butler's deal) and how Utah got picks for taking guys from GS. Maybe some team will be desperate to clear space and will give us something to help them do it.

1. Pau Gasol to mentor Len.
2. Sixth man type veteran guard who has proven winning background.
3. LeBron James

Potentially..

C: Len / Gasol / FA
SF/PF: Lebron James / Kieff Morris / Beasley
SF: Top 5 2014 pick (Parker / Wiggins) / Marcus Morris / Beasley
SG: Goodwin / Dragic / FA
PG: Bledsoe / Dragic / FA

I'm not sure what is more shocking... Gasol backing up the 2nd year player Len... or that you still have Beasley on our roster. What a waste of LeBron and Pau... they might be enough to turn us into a champion but with Beasley still on board spreading his aura of suck we probably only win 30 games

LeBron James paired with Parker/Randle/Wiggins in the draft would be the best offseason any team can have.

LeBron is a pipe dream. Why would he come here? There is NO incentive for him to leave Miami and come to Phoenix.

John Wall is gatting a max deal from the Wiz. What is a good deal for the Suns to give Bledsoe?
5 years / $45 Million?

I'd say minimum he'd want is $30m over 4, basically Dragic money. Best lock him up now cos I suspect he's going to have one of those 'chip on his shoulders, I'll show you' years. Like 16pts 5reb 6asst 2.5stl 1blk...

I'd offer $40m over 5, what Marcus Thornton got a couple years back.

Yeah the more I think about it, the more I want the front office lock Bledsoe up long term especially if its Dragic money. There was another thread here recently about how the 2014 free agent class is a bit overrated because when you look a little deeper, there isn't much after Lebron/Melo etc. 2015 might be better for us.

Demarcus Cousins said he wants to play the 4 and with a shot blocking big. Throw him the max and have Len and Cousins front court. Use Bledsoe to reel him in since they friends or something. Draft well in the 2014 nba draft and Bam! Suns are relevant once again. Starting to sound like you guys now lol. Then again...there is probably no way Kings don't match any offer we give him.

Cousins is a head case. No denying the talent, but I can't see him fitting the vision of how Babby and McD want to build this team. Not to mention he's probably the worst locker room influence for a young stud rookie. And I agree, the Kings will likely match. They are about as talentless as it gets.

Max for Cousins would make me go on an uncontrollable puke.gif spree again.

Saving money for either LeBron or restricted free agents and praying the other team doesn't match is our plan for 2014?

I don't think we'll use our cap space next season to sign a big name FA, because next year's class is pretty weak once you take LeBron out. The young guys are all restricted. The unrestricted are old vets like Kobe, Dirk, Gasol.

Instead, I imagine we'll use that cap space to collect more assets, like we did when we took on Butler's salary to get Bledsoe.

If anything, 2015 FA looks to be much more promising, and we should have a lot of cap space available since almost everybody on the team expires at that point.

The unrestricted list is not as poor as you state:

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/85896 ... -2013-2014

Carmelo, Amare, Wade, Lowry are not exactly "old vets".

Plus, the restricted agents might not be so restricted after all, given the financial pressure mounting up due to CBA.

Carmelo and Wade will be on the wrong side of 30. Wade will be coming off numerous injury issues. Neither of those dudes are worth giving max money to in our situation, and I doubt that they'd find Phoenix a particularly attractive opportunity when Hollywood is calling.

Amare's not going to opt-out when he has so much guaranteed money on the table. We don't need Lowry when we already have two starting PGs on the roster.

Kings are talking extension, so hopefully we'll be spared anymore Cousins to PHX talk.
