Nick Calathes
Looking like he is getting traded to Grizz for a '16 2nd rounder that will go to Mavs.
He was 12-13 Eurocup MVP and Calathes averaged 12.9 points, 6.7 assists and 5.9 rebounds in the tournament.

Well, the Grizz brass are getting down right Nick Saban esq regarding the type of players they acquire, but it would be great if said players were shooters.

I like that it could lead to Calathes playing the point buy guarding the 2 with Bayless free to play the 2 and guard the other team's PG.

He can play a bit of shooting guard, but not more than a few minutes. I'm assuming Nick and Koufos will be running a lot of pick-and-roll together off your bench. A lot.

Yup. The second unit of Calathes, Koufos, Davis, Pondexter and Bayless should prove interesting.

Are we positive that this guy's coming over this year?
And also, are we sure he will beat out Wroten/Franklin for the final spot in the guard rotation?

I hope he can beat out Tony Wroten, who looked like a guy that shouldn't even have a job during SL games. We'll see I suppose.

Agreed.
I just don't get how this dude Calathes was a good shooter in college and got worse? You don't see that happen all that often...

In my experience, the only way to really get significantly worse is to make a conscious change to your shooting mechanics.
It's possible he was trying to improve and a change like that backfired. Or he opted for a quicker release so he could shoot mid-range shots off the dribble when guys go under the pick.
Just a possibility.

Re: Nick Calathes
Having watched him play in Greece, i do think that he is an NBA backup calibre player.
He has incredible size for the point guard position, 6-6 north of 200lbs, and is extremely quick (by european standards at least).
I think it was great for him to play overseas first. Coming out of college he was playing out of control, couldn't really see the floor well and was an atrocious shooter. He helped defensively but he had lapses.
He ironed out almost all of his issues during his spell in Panathinaikos and Lokomotiv.
Right now, he can employ his speed without commiting a boatload of turnovers (though he still has issues with that), he can outmuscle or outrun most PGs, fight for rebounds, and play the pick and roll with ease. He does not possess the court vision of Rubio, but he is above average in that category.
Shooting still an issue though, and i don't think it is probable that he will ever have 3pt range.
Aside from that he is almost perfect for the Grizzlies, and i like the thought of him pairing up with Bayless, Q-Pon and Koufos.

Re: Nick Calathes
If he can perform at a level near what greivis did as a rookie he will be a huge asset.
And if not we still have wroten. He still hasnt quite adjusted to the nba, and doesnt play within himself, but he looks hungry and ive heard he put in a lot of work this offseason.
Now we just need to sign miller and dump prince, and we'll have a decent chance at another conference finals birth

Re: Nick Calathes
this might have zero to do with it but I was going back looking at his time at University of Florida and noticed his teammate Chandler Parsons and Calathes was the better player and much greater impact on the team. The great success and value of Parsons currently in the NBA bodes will for Calathes. This offseason will be an "A" if we manage to get Miller33 too. Still is a pretty good one without him.

I wouldn't get too carried away. Part of the reason Parsons is so successful is that he has a role player mentality and a role player skillset, and his role has not changed much since college. It helps him play within himself and it makes him extremely effective.
Calathes' role will not be anything like what it what it was at Florida or even in Europe.

Re: Nick Calathes
During his spell with Panathinaikos he played a complementary role next to Diamantidis and Spanoulis, and he never had that much creative freedom, nor the team relied very much in him making plays.
In Lokomotiv he had the chance to be more of a focal point of an offense, and push his limits as a scorer and a playmaker.
It won't be difficult for him to fit in a back-up role.

Re: Nick Calathes
Did Parsons and Calathes go to high school together too?
High School in Winter Park, Florida, with future fellow Florida Gator Nick Calathes. Together, Parsons and Calathes helped the Lake Howell Silverhawks high school team advance to the Florida Class 5A state basketball championship final four in 2005, 2006 and 2007, and win the state championship in 2007
Also Koufos and Calathes are both Greek.
Also Calathes and Miller both played in Gainsville. like Roberson, JWill, and Speights of course.
Also Koufos and Conley both went to Ohio State.
Consipracy!!!!

According a Greek sports website that is pretty reliable Calathes will sign with your team. (use google translator)

If that's true then it makes me think there's another move coming. Unless we release all the non-guaranteed contracts, we'll have to deal someone to get down to 15.

Wroten isn't scaring anyone for minutes. If this Euro player can shoot, he will get minutes. Franklin's lack of a jump shot will make it difficult to find minutes.

Sorry that i am disappointing you but he cant shoot. Thats his main weakness.
A more recent article says that he has proposal for 2 years, but it doesnt say the amount.

Re: Nick Calathes
The Grizz need shooters. If they're moving to a more statistics approach, I don't see where they get off standing pat? Mike Miller isn't going to give you more than 15 quality minutes a game at best anymore.
