What are your thoughts on Kidd Gilchrist?

Post#1 » by EricAnderson » Sat Jul 27, 2013 2:42 pm

I liked him in college alot but i thought people were going a little overboard in praise for his nba prospects with mostly "intangibles" yeah he hustles hard is a leader blah blah blah but intangibles only get you so far in the pros you need actual skills to go along with that..

He is a liability offensively in the halfcourt at times and has one of the worst looking jumpers ive ever seen its close to broke to where i dont think he can ever get that good at shooting..

Obviously he can become a really good defender, is very good at finishing in the fast break and in transition but i think his lack of offenisve skills in the halfcourt has his ceiling as a Igoudala/Artest level player which isnt bad but not as good as the hype he was getting coming out of college..

his season was very underrated last year. Can't tell you how many times I've read "if you take out his first 2 months where he was getting comfortable in the league Beal was dominant shooter!!" but if you take out the 2 horrid months that Kidd-Gilchrist struggled with concussion and other injuries he was quite a beast himself.

His biggest strength was always labelled as his intangibles that don't show up in the box score yet he put up a pretty decent PER for a rookie wing showing he could definitely affect the box score and showed a good all around game. He certainly didn't struggle enough to earn this bust label that people seem to be putting on him while hyping up guys like Beal, Barnes, Waiters etc.

I have none because he was the youngest player in the league last year.

But I'm sure there are people on here who are ready to label him as a "bust"

Well-Rounded player with hustle / but a horribly bad broken jumpshot

This.

Additionally, I think he will be a solid SF but in hindsight wont live up to his #2 selection.

He was the "safer" pick than a guy like Drummond at the time. His ceiling of course isn't as high also.
I seem him being solid.

According to my association mode in nba 2k13 he will end up being the #1 rated small forward some time in the next 3-5 seasons.

But really, I think if he fixes his jumper to be even "ok" he will be fine.

He is a beast in transition, and on the defensive end.

Not sure what his ceiling is, but I still like the pick, drummond will probably end up the better player at a more important position, but other than that I don't see anyone drafted after him I would rather have, including barnes.

I'm also not big on players with the whole intangibles label but if you watch MKG consistently you see just how dramatically he affects the game outside of the boxscore.

His half court game is underrated due to his horrid jumpshot. Everything else, passing, cutting, rebounding, he does very well.

He'll make a few Allstar games in his career.

The hitch in his jumpshot is weird.

I think he'll get that jumper to work somewhat so that he can be a moderate threat from midrange.

Why is there an MKG thread on here every few months?

At the very least he will be a great glue guy. Charlotte needs to get some players, esp shooters, to put around him. Zeller and MKG is a nice little combo at the PF/SF.

Passing on Drummond was a mistake but in hindsight 7 other teams made the same mistake last draft.

Right now he reminds of Gerald Wallace. He's a better passer and more aware defender though, so I think he has a higher ceiling...but will he reach that on the Bobcats?

I think his max is a guy like Deng, which is not a bad thing. He obviously really needs to improve his shooting to reach that level though.

If he can fix that ugly jumper the sky's the limit for this kid.

Great physical tools and effort. Not a star offensive player waiting to happen but given his age, could be way better than he is now. Not great for his draft slot but he'll be a good baller eventually.

Well truth be told... the 2nd pick hasn't been a sure fire pick recently over the past 10 years. Outside of KD, you have guys like Beasley, Williams, Turner, Tabeet, and etc.

Point, and compared to that, he can't be called a bust based on what he's already done but a pick that high, he's going to need big improvement to be "worth it" based on the season leading to that pick. Roleplayers at #2 = ne ne, you know?
