You know, I've seen other stories of this and asked myself, why? The only conclusion that I can come to (and of course I don't care), is that Gigi was given some mulah under the table along with other perks. There is no way in God's name an international player or any player for that matter would choose Detroit over the other cities mentioned. The whole story we'll never know...

he truly wants to play, and there are more possibilities here than in san antonio. there were in boston too, but detroit is a much better team now. mix the playing time with the possibilities to win (make the playoffs, not tanking) and you get detroit.
he held a press conference in rome last week (of about 30 mins) in which he said that he had chosen detroit also for the members of the staff, he spoke well of dumars and cheeks, saying that they made him feel in a family situation; spoke also of drummond and monroe, how good they are and how much they can open space for him.
and that he's impatient to play and prove that he's legit

I think we ought to slow down and see how he looks in preseason at the least before we anoint him the next Peja or Dirk, I remember last year about this time Kim English was going to be the next Micheal Redd.

Datome is on the right beside bargnani (just to notice the height differences...)

Is Bargs a considerably better player than Datome?

well, they're two completely different players, from a skillset standpoint i'd go for bargnani, he's too talented, he can knock down jumpers at will, and at his height he's a matchup nightmare for the opponents. But on the other hand there're some things you can't teach in basketball and willingness, determination, desire to win is something that doesn't belong to Andrea. The main concern with Gigi is ballhandling ability, which is really at a rough stage as of right now, but i love his attitude and demeanor

Hackett and Gallinari are injuried so they are probably 4/5 of the starting players.

PG: Diener (Cinciarini)
SG: Belinelli
SF: Datome
PF/C: Bargnani

Italy has not very good centers in the roster so probably they will start with a rebounding PF near Bargnani.
With healthy Hackett and Gallo they could decide to play an intriguing and aggressive "small basketball" style.

Wow!

honestly wasn't that impressed, he doesn't look quick enough for the nba , lacks explosiveness, and looks skrony. i think he;s a 3pt specialist and that's it.

I'm italian so probably I cannot be so objective about Gigi but Datome DOES NOT lack explosiveness. He is not a pure shooter for sure. My beloved Ginobili was defined a slow pure shooter when he came to the NBA. Everyone in Europe knew that he was a great athlete, a wonderful playmaker AND a good shooter.
