Q: If you think back to some of the past few championships, the winner has picked up a player midseason to help put them over the edge, Rasheed Wallace with the Pistons, P.J. Brown with the Celtics, and now Birdman with the Heat. So wouldn't it be wise to play the waiting game on filling out our roster? -- Scott, Los Angeles.

A: Ding. Ding. Ding. We have a winner. You'd be surprised how much further a mid-level exception might go in February than the dog days of free agency. And Pat Riley has a habit of energizing his product with such mid- or late-season moves. The buyout deadline should not be understated. What you pick up in free agency in August, should not be overstated.

The problem is, you have to rely on such a player becoming available. Neither Turiaf nor Dampier or Bibby have been that productive for us, at least not to the degree a guy like Birdman, PJ Brown or Rasheed Wallace for their respective teams.

Including Sheed in that group makes little sense anyway considering he was acquired in a trade. Why would we need a MLE to sign somebody released midseason anyway?

I've never wanted to punch someone in the face so badly. Really hoping to run into him at a game one day. I won't hesitate.

I think he would be a good fit on the Grizz, prob get 15min there. I don't think he would get much more than 15min here.

Agreed. My point was just that it doesn't always work out the way it has in the past. People don't realize what a huge addition the Birdman was given his abilities and his price.

They are, but he has better chances of also seeing minutes at the 2 in case Memphis needs good spacing and it's easier to get ahead of Tony Allen than Dwyane Wade.

Memphis isn't dedicated to small ball like we are so there's a better chance he'll get 15-20 minutes over here (assuming Cole or Rio get kicked out of the rotation). I'm thinking they would use Mo like they used Arenas a few years back...a few 15 min. games every now and again

I think we give Mo at least as many minutes as Memphis can. Rio and Cole arn't allstars and Wade and Allen will take it easy with their minutes next year. the question is if Memphis is offering him MiniMLE money. If they dont, we have a real shot to get him.

Looks like the Macs got DeJuan Blair. If they got him the Vet min, i think we missed out. He's solid, and he's a Heat kind of player. could have been really useful for us for the vet min.

Detroit looking pretty good. One team not tanking.

monroe-drummond is going to be the best front court in the league, probably not this year, but soon.

The problem with Detroit is they are surrounding their good young core with stupid, low IQ players.

Detroit have been pretty poor for a while now, I'm sure having any talent will be a huge boost for the fans there. It's not going to be a championship contending team this year. But they got Jennings on a pretty good deal, and have 2 young exciting big men. This team will likely make playoffs and rejuvenate basketball in Detroit.

Jennings/Knight is an awful combo. The Pistons really messed up something potentially good by adding Jennings and Smith.
