Re: Trade Deadline 2013: Alfonso Soriano Back to the Yankees
The Sawx are apparently right on the cusp of acquiring Jake Peavy from the White Sox.
Even with this deal, I don't see them having a better rotation than the Rays down the stretch.

Re: Trade Deadline 2013: Alfonso Soriano Back to the Yankees
The Peavy deal is a three team trade between the Red Sox, White Sox and Tigers...
http://tracking.si.com/2013/07/30/red-s ... avy-trade/
I honestly don't understand what the Sawx are doing here. They're getting a streaky starter, who is owed nearly $20 million over the next year and a half, and letting go of one of the top young shortstops in all of baseball (who has been incredibly productive in a weak AL rookie class, to boot). Not too mention, Iglesias is going to a team that could very well face the Sawx in October.
Thoughts?
Red Sox infielder Jose Iglesias will be headed to the Detroit Tigers and Tigers outfielder Avisial Garcia is going to Chicago as part of the trade.
CBSSports.com reports that the Tigers needed an infielder because the team is expecting shortshop Jhonny Peralta to be suspended as part of Major League Baseball’s investigation into the Biogenesis clinic.
Peavy is 8-4 with a 4.28 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 80 innings pitched this season and was scratched from his start Tuesday against Cleveland Indians amid trade rumors.

Call Middlebrooks back up?
Xander Boegarts is the future anyway.
get value for Iglesias instead of blocking ppl?

Re: Trade Deadline 2013: Alfonso Soriano Back to the Yankees
Actually, now that I'm digging a little deeper, apparently Peavy was the second choice after Cliff Lee, but the Phils wanted Boegarts as part of the package.
Consider my previous post a slight overreaction. I still don't think Peavy is/will be worth giving up Iglesias.
EDIT: I also now realize that Iglesias has been playing a lot of 3B and I'm really tired.

Iglesias just can't hit, he's a very good defensive player tho. Look at his numbers after his hot start; also look at his minor league numbers. It is very ugly.
As for Peavy, I'm not a huge fan of his but the Sox gave up next to nothing to get him. The team will most likely call up Boegarts to play third; unless of course they make a deal for Michael Young.

Re: Trade Deadline 2013: Alfonso Soriano Back to the Yankees
Reports are saying that the Phillies have pulled Cliff Lee off the market and are shifting their focus to giving Chase Utley a new deal.
So, going off of Ruben Amaro's logic here: I can't get Xander Bogaerts, so I'm keeping my ace and giving a lucrative extension to my oft-injured, though beloved second baseman.
I think the man has finally lost his touch.

I'm not really sure what the Phillies are doing, it's pretty ugly. They need to move Lee, Paps, Utley etc and try to start over.

Re: Trade Deadline 2013: Alfonso Soriano Back to the Yankees
I honestly believe Amaro may be afraid to blow up the team because it's Philly and he's not sure how the fans will react. I don't really have an issue with keeping Utley, especially since he's the franchise guy (along with Rollins), but giving him an extension now, rather than waiting til the offseason to gauge free agency, is foolish.
He can't possibly believe he isn't hindering the team by letting them become stagnant like this, can he? We all know he's not getting rid of Ryan Howard's waste of a contract, but c'mon now, do something smart.

Re: Trade Deadline 2013: Alfonso Soriano Back to the Yankees
We've got about two hours before the deadline and it's suspiciously quiet.
The only deal I can possibly see getting done between now and 4pm is one for Michael Young, maybe Nate Schierholtz or Alex Rios (even though he left early yesterday with an apparent foot injury).

D'Backs unload Ian P. Kennedy to the Padres for Joe Thatcher (a very good 7th/8th inning guy) and Matt Stites (who looks to be a very promising closer).

I like the move for the Padres and fully expect Kennedy to greatly improve.

As you can see, I'm still bitter about Ian P. Kennedy hitting his stride post-Yankees.

Re: Trade Deadline 2013: Alfonso Soriano Back to the Yankees
from my perspective.
he's only had one good year in the majors.
any time a team unloads you within the division, you're probably not that good and they're not worried about you coming back to haunt them.

Yep, solid move for both sides, imo.

Apparently the Yankees have a deal in place for Michael Young, but he hasn't OK'd it yet.
Also, there's a few teams on the verge of getting Bud Norris.

Maxwell to the Royals.
Cant really judge the trade yet, still unknown on what the Royals are giving back.

Re: Trade Deadline 2013: 1 Hour Left
So, the Sawx and Orioles each get themselves a top end starter for the stretch, while the Rays and Yankees do nothing to improve.
The Rays also just put Matt Moore on the DL, though it seems to be precautionary for elbow soreness.
There's obviously chances for waiver deals, but it looks like we have some clear winners.

He had one great year. But he had two solid years in 10 and 12. Plus if petco can make Jason Marquis look decent, I have to assume Kennedy will greatly improve.
