Riley Cooper sorry for racial slur

A video of Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper uttering a racial slur at a Kenny Chesney concert surfaced Wednesday.

In the video, Cooper vowed to "fight every n-----" at the July concert in Philadelphia. Cooper issued an apology Wednesday afternoon.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said Cooper has been fined by the team.

"We are shocked and appalled by Riley Cooper's words," Lurie said in a statement. "This sort of behavior or attitude from anyone has no role in a civil society. He has accepted responsibility for his words and his actions. He has been fined for this incident."

The NFL also issued a statement on Cooper: "The NFL stands for diversity and inclusion. Comments like this are wrong, offensive, and unacceptable."

Cooper, 25, has 46 catches for 679 yards and five touchdowns in 40 career games. He is expected to assume a larger role in the Eagles' offense this year after the season-ending injury to Jeremy Maclin.

"I am so ashamed and disgusted with myself," Cooper said in a statement. "I want to apologize. I have been offensive. I have apologized to my coach, to Jeffrey Lurie, to Howie Roseman and to my teammates. I owe an apology to the fans and to this community. I am so ashamed, but there are no excuses. What I did was wrong and I will accept the consequences."

My view is that the league offices should not punish him any further than whatever the Eagles decide upon. I don't like what he said & his views of black people, but whatever disciplinary action taken by the Eagles should be it. He has to look his black teammates in the face everyday, so that (along with the Eagles discipline) should be enough punishment for him.

They should simply handle this in-house as a team. Maybe his views on black people will change for the better after this incident.

People say dumb things when they're drunk, even athletes. Thought the whole reaction was overblown. He apologised, Eagles fining him seems like a fair thing to do. Hopefully nothing more comes of it.

Congratulations to Marcus Vick. He's making the news without being arrested.

The dude is flat out racist. The truth came out, that's all. He should just move on with life knowing full well that he hates black people. He should not apologize, and play as an openly-out of the closet-black a phobist.

While that is true, Cooper has to realize he's an NFL player and has to think before he speaks/acts in public places. Fair or not, such is life for a pro athlete or any celebrity really.

Totally agree. These guys are role models/public figures by default whether they like it not and this is going to follow Cooper for a long time.

He was drunk and made a mistake. There's no reason to punish him.

Ya he's going to get punished enough on the field. I wouldn't be surprised if a few dirty/late hits are thrown his way or if a few teammates happen to miss a block or two from time to time.

People let their filters down when they are drunk. I've been drunk plenty of times and nothing racist ever has or will leave my mouth. It only comes out if you have it inside. I don't necessarily think he should be punished further, his punishment is everyone knowing who he is now.

Great job by Marcus Vick to keep the stereotype alive that feeds this word. Dude doesn't even know how to use a 3rd person form of a verb. "the free safety that light his ass up"

It's a word. Using it doesn't make you racist anymore than calling a woman a bitch makes you sexist. This is stupid beyond belief. Fine the guy and move on. I wonder how many times the n-bombs is dropped during games.

Maybe, or maybe he was brought up in racist environment where that word was used. If his parents were racist I could see that type of language slipping out when he's drunk even if he doesn't agree with it. Only Cooper really knows.

The NFL should fine him since he's part of the NFL, it'll say the NFL doesn't condone what he said.
The Eagles should do whatever they feel they need to do, could be nothing.

Whatever the case, Cooper is going to get lit up a little bit more in games and he should, he can say what he wants but that comes with repercussions.

this is just dumb. how many times do you think he hears that same word be thrown about the locker-room by his teammates? yet he has to go to counseling? it's bull. an apology should be enough.

i've heard Wade and Lebron throwing it around on the court and the mics pick it up. nothing is ever said.

The reason for the backlash is because he is an NFL player making millions of dollars and is involved in a sport that is marketed worldwide. Look at the trouble Culliver got in for making homophobic remarks before the super bowl, and he didn't even drop the f-bomb.

The fine he got was enough, especially since he's probably going to be lit up by opposing defense, I'll predict there will be another bountygate before the season is over.

Personally, I could care less about his comments, yea it was offensive, but we've all said offensive things all the time plus I already know that white people still use the n-word freely, whether it's intended to be racist or not. As a black person we (blacks) shouldn't use the term either because it's still a slur, no matter how you try to change the meaning. Some women call each other b****** but it's still a curse word, f*** is still a curse word whether it's used to express extreme emotion or as a slang term for fornication.

Hopefully this will blow over for him because everyone makes mistakes.

The thing is this went public once public Media gets a hold on it and it goes viral, the NFL and the Eagles orginazation had to do something about it. For the fact that a non-black man said it in the context to do harm it makes it a big deal. Urban entertainment throughout the late 90's and early 2000's are to blame for the n-word. But in 2013 that word should be banned from saying.

There is a big defference from saying n1gg@ and n1gg3r. Riley Cooper said it ending with an er. I also can say that both LeBron and Wade are disappointed in Riley Cooper as well.

no, it really isn't a difference. it's a superficial excuse used far too often. it's the same damn word where the "good" doesn't exist independent of the "bad" word.

He's been excused from the team now and the Eagles will probably have to cut him due to the backlash.

Kinda agree with your point. It is interesting how a few people have come out and said how often other people/athletes say it in different environments but people get passed it.
