Pekovic to ATL?

Post#1 » by Heatin4 » Sat Aug 3, 2013 11:29 pm

Why didnt the ATL go heavy for this premier Center? Is it a money issue - too many dudes on the roster - his Slavic background?

Slavic backround? We just signed Pero Antic, that's not the reason.

Minnesota already stated that they would match any offer that goes his way and right off the bat they offered 13 mil per year, we didn't have the money after re-signing Korver and signing Millsap and Carroll, we also re-signed Teague so that completely took us out of the running.

Yeah. Pek is a very good Center. But paing him $15million per year wouldn't make us elite or buy us a championship.

Unlike you Heat fans with your HOF GM and franchise player as recruiter, we are stuck building a contender the long, hard way.

Drafting well, smart signings in Free Agency, top flight coaching.

Minny has said time and time again that they are going to match any offer Pekovic gets. Seems almost futile to offer to him, have the money be tied up waiting on a Minny match.

I disagree on the financial reason.
After signing Korver and Milsap, keeping Carroll for the MLE, and with Teague cap hold, we still were able to offer him at least 14M on first year, and still 12M on first year after matching Teague.

It's just that they thought that MIN would match even at Max, or that Pekovic would not sign.

2 thoughts: You saw JT get a 8/32 offer from MIL, that we had to match. MIL would have been fine paying JT due to what they got out of Ellis/Jennings last year. I don't think DF would have offered JT that much and probably would have let him play out his contract. It's just a way that Sund did business with Josh. If you can go out and get a better deal, good luck.

My other thought was we could have easily offered Pekovic that contract. After paying Antic, Brand, Ayon, which total 6.5M, then you let Josh walk who had 13M tied up, there was more than enough to offer him. Would you today offer Pekovic the same 3/45 that Josh was offered by DF? I say yes, make Minny match the offer and let them screw up their salary cap numbers.

DF looks better being turned down than not making an offer at all. I would be very excited to see a Pekovic/Al frontline rotation with MIllsap. Pek was a 16/8 guy last year at age 27 in 31mpg, yet will we even get 31 productive mpg from Brand, Antic and Ayon?

I like going for Pek instead of us polluting the roster with these guys you have no idea what production you are going to get. DF missed out on this one IMO and he could have stuck Minny with a bill they didn't want to pay. Throw DAL in there as well.

Its about getting the best players available to make your team a contender. I think Pek would have fit very well on this roster. His game fits the Eastern Conference better than the run and gun West.

Pekovic appears serious about becoming a FA next year, when he can be offered a max deal. Timberwolves fans are saying he wants $15 million this year.
My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

I REALLY like Pekovic. But he is NOT a MAX player.
Paying that much money to be our second (or third) leading scorer/rebounder would be a mistake.

He'd be a great addition to the team, but at $14 million+ he'd effect how much we could re-sign AL for. He'd effect what other Free Agents we could afford in the future. He'd effect how much PT Bebe could expect in a couple of seasons.

He wants $15 but I doubt he expects to receive that much.
I'm not completely up to date on his free agency status and what's occurred. I'm only assuming, but Minny could be trying to back-load his contracts, and not pay him a consistent amount throughout the entire duration.

Maybe because our coaching staff already decided that Pekovic does not fit at all into the system we are going to play with. I believe Horford will continue being our starting 5, obviously, and Millsap will be our 4.
Then Ayón, Antic and Brand will give some kind of rest from the bench and none of them has a define position. All are bt 6-9 and 6-10 with shoes and are not centers, neither true PFs.
Antic can stretch the floor some. Also can Brand. Ayón has no shouting touch at all, but it is faster and stronger that the other 2.
Then I believe we are going to play a fast kind of game, up and down, defending, running when we can.
Then, when attacking 5x5, Horford and Millsap, Brand and Antic will stretch the floor waiting for colleagues to cut, to open up, to post agains weaker defenders.
I hope we play a lot with Millsap and Scott at the 3, because Korver is not a real SF. That would give us a great physical advantage against other SFs and will cause the defend to collapse. Korver at the 2 and maybe Louis at the one sometimes can give us that outside shot we need.

I am a little annoyed now.

ESPN reports Pekovic and T-Wolves agree to a new deal. The terms: a reported 5 year deal for a total of $60 million.

$12 million a year on average (for salary cap purposes).

That is identical to the deal Horford is on and Pek's production is on par with AL's. This is a very good signing for Minny.

I do hope we put an offer out there at least to this guy. What a great deal for Minnesota.

What are the odds we end up trading Horford for Pekovic in a year or so?

That's more like his value, not the $15 million he desired, but knowledgeable fans realized he'd never receive that amount per year.

We never know exactly what is offered and asked.
There is lots of chances that Pekovic was asking for 60M but never for 4 years.
MIN was offering 4 years at 12M/yr, maybe he was only asking for 60M, for one more guaranteed year, but never for 60M on 4 years.

And that's exactly what we couldn't offer.
At 12M/yr, it would have been great to get him, since we were able to offer that kind of money, but on 4 years and not on 5 years.
