Something about Drummond. Question looking for an answer.
Every time I come to realgm, I end up, at some point, watching mixes of him on youtube. To say im excited about this guy is an understatement, but the one thing that always sticks out to me is a quality, (This is where I need some help here in answering a question) that I honestly cant remember ever seeing out of a man his size.
His ability to swipe the damn ball, from players half his size, who are supposed to be wizards at ball-handling, at the PG-SG slot, on the open floor, top of the key, you name it.
Not only that, he has the ball handling skills to drive down court, and take care of the rest. I have seen that countless times from PG's, SG's, SF's, but I cannot, for the life of me, ever remember seeing that from a 290lbs 7'.
He is so damn fast, and has such good hands for a Center.
I am really racking my brain here, and I cant think of any bigman like that. Its not some isolated incident either. It happened a bunch last year, its in every single one of his highlights on youtube. I have seen bigmen get swipes like that before, but not having the skills, and speed to end up on the other end finishing like he does, and on a consistent basis. They swipe, and hold static, then pass it off.
I am genuinely stuck on this one.

Hes a freak. People who don't watch him play aren't aware of things like this. They label him as just another athletic big. I hate the DeAndre comps because they underestimate just how freakish Dre actually is. This guy does stuff that people half his size can't do. It boggles my mind. There has never been an NBA big, and I mean never, of his size with his athleticism. Hes a freak. He would destroy in any sport.

Hakeem wasn't 290lbs. I think that's his point. Its hard to think of a big man Drummonds size that could steal the ball from a guard on the perimeter and take it coast to coast.

He's essentially, a guard in a big man's body. There's literally no other explanation.
It's mind-boggling how fluid and quick he moves since he's monstrous.

Re: Something about Drummond. Question looking for an answer
He might be one of a kind. It's really too early in this kids career to say for sure, but 15 years from now people might be labeling incoming rookies "the next Drummond".

Re: Something about Drummond. Question looking for an answer
In terms of how well he moves around the only comparison would be younger Shaq, he's a bit shorter than Shaq, but the weight is in the same ballpark (Magic days Shaq).

Is Drummond really 290? I doubt it. His listed weight is 270 on wikipedia and he doesn't look like he is 290. Hakeem's weight is 255. I see some similarities on the defensive end. Of course Hakeem has a crazy good offensive game that I don't think Drummond will ever get.

Re: Something about Drummond. Question looking for an answer
Hakeem is the closest comparison in terms of the physical ability. Hakeem was also ridiculous quick, had GREAT hands and some guard skills.
If you look back at Dre in high school, he looked like a point forward in terms of play style. It's why he loves those double clutch hang-in-the-air type layups that you rarely see from bigmen. He has some legit perimeter skills, and I have a feeling the more we watch the more we will see how great of a passer he is.

I think it's a remarkable combination of both hand speed and hand-eye coordination, and no, I've never seen such a thing in a man his size. "Freak" doesn't begin to describe him; in a league full of elite athletes, he's truly gifted compared to other NBA players. On that note, I'd love to see Andre take up boxing; not only would a boxing regimen continue to improve and develop his already incredible hand speed, but he'd learn to stay light on his feet at all times and develop tremendous cardio as well. And oh yeah, imagine how much even more intimidating he'd be protecting the paint once footage of him in the ring started to surface!

Re: Something about Drummond. Question looking for an answer
I found this gem of Shaq playing point.
http://i.minus.com/ibgOGONKgxddRL.gif
And of course, this one of Shaq owning Jordan 1 on 1.

Maybe we should give Dre a shot.
Some vintage footage of Shaq doing the things Dre did last season. Their movement is eerily similar.

Dre is more of a mix between Howard and Shaq than just being similar to Hakeem.

Re: Something about Drummond. Question looking for an answer
I can see the Hakeem comparisons, and he was a great thief, I just don't remember him doing in the open court against PG's, and then driving and dunking, Its weird to watch. He gets REAL low like a guard, and just swipes it like a damn guard,
He is going to be deadly on the defensive pick and roll. Our center wont just show, he will try, and will swipe and dunk like a damn guard. That's absurd, and puts guards at the top of the key, to be aware at all times. It will start to limit other teams offensive pick and rolls when Drummond is involved. That is a huge deal from a defensive stand-point.

Re: Something about Drummond. Question looking for an answer
I've said it many times before, but I think it's possible he's the best C in the league next season and on his way to being a top 3 player in the league. I don't wanna count my chickens before they hatch, but I'm ridiculously excited about this guy. The really scary part is that he doesn't even know how to play yet and he's still developing physically. Barring injury I think Dwight is pretty much his basement and worst case scenario. That's quite a statement to make... but I believe it.

I just hope the offseason changes don't negatively impact his development.

Prior to a game during the season the announcers said Drummond weighed in at 294 or 298lbs right before the game, he was also 279lbs at the rookie combine and that was after allegedly losing 22lbs. He's every bit of 290lbs, just look at his legs in comparison to someone like DeAndre Jordan who is 265.

I could have sworn that when interviewed at SL this year he said he was 280 and liked the weight he was at and didnt want to get much bigger.

Re: Something about Drummond. Question looking for an answer
hes a man amongst boys physically, we need him to become a man amongst boys mentally. I think he's shown the makings of that the way he plays around during other guys interviews and the way he tossed Hansbrough around and didn't back down when Lebron came at him last season.
coming into last year, my biggest concern about Dre was his confidence, that's not even an issue anymore if it ever was. now my biggest concern is what kind of effect Smith and Jennings are going to have on his attitude.
