"Decisions on the court last yr based on pleasing Howard"

Post#1 » by dockingsched » Mon Aug 5, 2013 10:42 pm

http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/lak ... resurgence

MDA:

“We did have a free-agent market last year we had to be aware of, and you make certain arguments based on the future,” Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni told ESPNLosAngeles.com. “Whether they’re right or wrong, that’s the reality of it, and we went that way, but it was never meant to be a slight to (Gasol) or never meant to be that he was the cause of our problems.”

“There was just a lot of factors last year that won’t come up this year,” D’Antoni said. “I even told (Gasol), you make decisions based a lot of times on the future that probably, if you were just doing the competitive, basketball thing, the decision would have been something else.

“I just see them kind of blending in together pretty easily,” D’Antoni said. “A lot easier than it was last year (with Howard), let’s put it that way.”

Pau:

“It was at times frustrating because of the reality of that specific situation,” Gasol told ESPNLosAngeles.com in a phone interview from Barcelona. “Obviously the franchise wanted Dwight to stay and everyone, or a lot of people, tried to make him comfortable and please him at times.”

Nash:

He’ll have the starting point guard, Steve Nash, on his side to help those expectations from going the way of Dickens’ Pip.

“I thought the games that Pau and I played together where Dwight didn’t play, I thought we really played well together and the offense really flowed,” Nash told ESPNLosAngeles.com. “So, I’m not concerned about that. That’s going to be great.”

aside from the general sentiment excitement of getting howard out of offensive system, most telling is MDA's comment that decisions last yr would have been different if they were simply based on being the best on the court team they could be.

Pretty easy to see why. Having Howard wanting a million post touches was one of our biggest problems.

It was pretty obvious something like that was going on. Nash was out much of the season, so it didn't seem possible that essentially replacing Bynum with Dwight would make the team that awkward and unpleasant to watch...

Interesting. It was pretty obvious though especially when Nash yelled at Howard.

Not trying to start drama or anything but I really find myself confused as to why so many posters around the trade deadline refused to consider trading Dwight? I remember spending countless hours debating with at least two posters why we needed to trade Dwight. I can't remember who you were. But please explain to me why it was a good idea to let him walk outside of cap space for 14.

Seems like everybody from coaching staff to players just wanted that cancer to leave. Dwight Howard is the definition of cancer.

I'm glad the Big Sabotage is gone. I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out in Houston when things get tough.

Its easy to take shots at him once he left but injured or not, next to Kobe, he played most minutes last season and he's likely the second biggest reason we even made the playoffs and saved further embarrassment.

It must be easy for MDA & Pau to hide behind him and make excuses for their own shortcomings but its certainly not dignified. They need to move on like most fans and be aware that there's a lot more time to be judged for their performances without an escape route of blaming it on the **** next season.

when a player flat our refuses to run the play that has brought the coach, the former mvp pg, and himself the most success they've all seen in their career, i think they can rip him all the want.

truth is though, i don't think they were even ripping him here or not moving on, they're just stating why gasol's role was diminished last yr and why it should and will be different and something we should look forward to. if they really believe next year will be different for gasol and want fans to believe things will improve for gasol, they're naturally going to talk about why things didn't work out last yr and why they think it'll better in the future.

From my viewpoint, Kobe played his ass off to get us into the playoffs.

It was all Kobe, he himself changed his game to a passer not Mike, Kobe tried to get Pau to the post not Mike, **** Kobe had the idea to play 48 minutes a game and Mike was too much of a pansy to freaking tell him off. So why don't you get the **** out of here and use your f'n brain bitch. :naaa:

I guess Dwight putting up 20+ pts 15+ rebounds a game after the allstar break had nothing to do with us going on a run and making the playoffs, it was all Kobes doing smh

I'm not one who's gonna say Dwight didnt ball his ass off after the AS break because he did. DEFENSIVELY.
Which is his bread and butter and that's not going to change.

Posters with basketball knowledge should know by now after watching this guy for 10 years in the league that he'll never be that go to guy in crunch time who will get you a clutch, isolated post hook bucket. The only time he'll get a clutch bucket will be off another player serving him up like a Kobe and now James Harden.

His defense alone makes him a max player for the rest of his career. Well Of course until the day his athleticism and durability goes out the window like every superstar who gets old .

@Stunnar's qoute:
That 20 ppg and 15 rpg from Dwight was awesome but how many of those points were during crunch time?
I can guarantee you alot of those boards and blocks he ripped down was during crunch time.

Dwight will never win you a game off of a bucket.
But he has won a ton of games off his defense and Im pretty confident that will continue in Htown.

As for what Dantoni is saying it does seem to me he is saving face a little bit. Coach seems all over the place since Dwights departure and its time to let it go. It's like he trying to prove something to Lakersnation but he needs to realize the sad truth that he won't be excepted until he brings in W's. Shut up and Coach. Move the hell on.
