Players who shoot the lowest FG% from 16-24 ft
Here's a list of players who shoot the lowest FG% on shots from 16-24 ft... with a minimum of 140 FGAs from that range last year.
http://stats.nba.com/leaguePlayerShots. ... ft3*GE*140
Anthony Davis 26% 146 att
Tony Allen 30.6% 147 att
MKG 30.9% 175 att
Jason Maxiell 31.6% 152 att
Greg Monroe 31.7% 145 att
E'Twaun Moore 32.2% 152 att
Josh Smith 32.4% 281 att
Rudy Gay 32.9% 228 att
DeMarcus Cousins 33.2% 259 att
Andre Iguodala 33.3% 150 att
Brandon Knight 33.3% 144 att
Interesting that these are the worst of the worst in the league with a minimum of 140 attempts last year... 3 of them were Pistons but we've obviously lost Knight and Maxiell... And Smith, Iggy, and Gay were all rumored to be the three players Detroit had the most interest in this summer... What's really surprising is the HUGE number of shots Josh Smith takes at that range... which if Cheeks can get him in check would drastically increase his efficiency as an offensive player... if he could get those attempts down to say 160 or 180 rather than 281.

I think it's pretty well known that if Josh would focus on getting to the rim and not shooting long 2s and 3s he would be a much better offensive player. Whether Cheeks has the pull/ability to make Smith see the error of his ways and to cut down on those shots is yet to be seen.

What is somewhat shocking to see though is that Rudy Gay is right next to him... So many people here wanted Gay over Smith because he was such a better shooter but in reality he's just as bad as smith from 16-24 FT and also takes a high number of shots from that range.

This will probably surprise people but Jennings percentages from that range are actually crazy good.
48% from the left side and 43% from the right.

It really shouldn't surprise anyone. Brandon is actually a really good shooter, its his horrific shot selection that drags everything down.Q00 wrote:This will probably surprise people but Jennings percentages from that range are actually crazy good.

He KNOWS that though, and as he said in his presser, he will change his game. He doesn't need to do the things he did in the land of venison. He can pick and choose his shots, and pass his ass off.
He really SHOULD average around 10APG here. Its **** lob city as he stated.

The problem is, if Smith is going to spend a lot time playing small forward, they're going to need him to take those jump shots, whether it's a 3 or long 2.

That's not true at all. You can run the pick and roll, dump it to moose in the post, or the same with Smith, or, and I know its not talked about because its almost as if we don't have one, let our SG take some shots. (Negate everything I said, if I didn't understand what you meant. My brain seems a little slow today.)ImHeisenberg wrote:The problem is, if Smith is going to spend a lot time playing small forward, they're going to need him to take those jump shots, whether it's a 3 or long 2.
Besides that, the shots hes going to be taking, should be much better, then the ones he had in Mil.
I just want to see this team play damn it. I love a good discussion as much as the next guy, but this is getting redundant.
At least the schedule is released here in a few hours. Then we will have something new to talk about.

Re: Players who shoot the lowest FG% from 16-24 ft
Smith has try and keep defenders honest on the perimeter when Monroe has the ball in the post, so Greg isn't constantly shooting over two or three defenders. That was pretty much the case all last season.

Is it fair to compare his style on offense to Prince? I don't think Tay has more range than Smith. Also, Tay preferred taking the long 2's and posting up, and we were fine.

Exactly. Anytime someone brings up spacing I wonder do they think we had a drop dead shooter at SF last year or something. Even after Prince was gone, Singler wasn't exactly draining shots the way you would've thought he would.

All I got from this is that The Brow is a serious bricklayer.

Considering many people thought he didn't have a lick of offense before he played 1 game in the NBA, I'd say that's decent.

The Brow has a clip. As in NBA 3 point range from what I saw from him at the Olympic scrimmage. Lots of offensive upside there.

Hey, I'm not saying he won't improve -- he was just the worst in the NBA by a considerable margin. I agree with letting the guy work on it, because the talent is obviously there. Making barely 1/4th of your long 2's is pretty scary, though.

Wow, I thought Anthony Davis was a slightly below average shooter. Turns out he was garbage last year. MKG worse than Maxiell? Yikes...shocking to see Rudy Gay shoot so poorly as well.
Not shocked by Jennings' percentage. His low percentage was due to shooting too many jumpers, and many of them being contested. Ability wise, he's a pretty good shooter.

Davis was a little surprising. Being a rookie big man, nobody is going to worry too much about that stat. MKG can't shoot, no surprise. Rudy Gay had the luxury of being on a contender for most of the season, so a lot of his terrible shots turned into offensive rebounds for Z-Bo and Gasol.

Trouble is the setup the Pistons have with Drummond/Monroe occupying the paint is probably going to make Smith MORE likely to fall into settling for those jumpers, not less.

Are you trying to make me push our win total to below 39?Snakebites wrote:Trouble is the setup the Pistons have with Drummond/Monroe occupying the paint is probably going to make Smith MORE likely to fall into settling for those jumpers, not less.

The good part, Jennings and Smith both should get more open shots and not as many contested shots as thier previous situations.

So wrong.
Tay is a very good shooter when given enough time and space to get his shot off. However, anytime Tay wanted to go off the dribble, his effectiveness went down considerably due to his horrible shot mechanics.
I would be comfortable with Tay taking any shot without regard to distance from basket; as long as he was set and had ample space to launch.
With Smith, people just leave him wide open on the perimeter and he still bricks them.
