Voting Closed TylersLakers Advances 8-1

Post#1 » by EArl » Wed Aug 7, 2013 1:28 am

Please rank these teams 1 and 2 based on who has the best combination of team chemistry, offense, defense, intangibles, and the gm's word. Everyone and anyone is welcomed to vote, you need not have a team in this contest to vote. Feel free to provide a 1-2 sentence explanation of your rankings if you wish.
Remember every player is in their prime.
Here are the rosters for your consideration:

TylersLakers:
Spoiler:
PG: Nick Van Exel

One of the most exciting Laker guards in history. Really helped transition the franchise after Magic Johnson and kept the Lakers exciting. Knows how to get up and down. Best season: 2000-2001 -- 17.7 PPG, 8.5 APG

SG: Trevor Ariza

The glue guy to the 2009 Championship. During the season made highlight plays, athletic, defended, and come playoff time -- you could not leave him open. Best time: 2009 NBA Playoffs -- 23 GS, 11.3 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 1.6 SPG, 47% 3PT, 50% FG

SF: Jamaal Wilkes

Stu Lantz has an absolute hard-on for this man. The man with the "Silk" jump shot. His jersey was retired by the Lakers this season. Best season: 1980-1981 -- 22.6 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 1.5 SPG, 53% FG

PF: Happy Hairston

Needed a good physical 4 next to Kareem. Managed to snatch him up. One of the best players on the team that won 33 games in a row. Best Season: 1969-1970 -- After coming to the Lakers from Detroit, in his first 55 games with LAL, he averaged -- 20.6 PPG, 12.5 RPG, 49% FG, 80% FT

C: Kareem Abdul Jabbar

In the argument for the greatest player and Laker of all time. The NBA's current all time leading scorer and has the most unstoppable shot in NBA history. Best Season: 1971-1972 -- 34.8 PPG, 16.6 RPG, 4.6 APG, 57% FG

Sixth Man: Cliff Robinson

Don't get confused with the gangster Clifford Robinson. This Clifford Robinson was good. Best Season: 1982-1983 -- 18.0 PPG, 11.1 RPG

Head Coach: Mark Jackson

A great PG in his playing days, a master motivator. Inspiration. Ask his current players, they play their ass off for him. Led a young GSW team to the playoffs this season without one of their top players in David Lee.

--------------

Why TylersLakers?

My plan of attack going in once I got Kareem Abul Jabbar was surround him with another Laker jersey that's currently retired (Wilkes) and an exciting guard in the back court (Van Exel). Once those three positions were filled, I wanted roleplayers who could come in and be dogs defensively and do the intangibles (Hairston, Ariza). Kareem proved during the Showtime Days that he could fit in just fine with an up-tempo attack, and Van Exel knows how to push the pace and excite the crowd with Ariza on the wing. When in the half court, there's no better option than Kareem on the block, or a wide open Wilkes jumper. The answer is simple -- two Laker jerseys that are retired, two of the biggest fan favorites, with a member of the biggest win streak of all time mixed in. Add in Clifford Robinson's 17 PPG and 8 RPG career average and it's over.

VS

Simba248
Spoiler:
PG: Sedale Threatt
Specialized in playing tough fast handed defense, hence nicknamed "The Thief". Very sharp and accurate passer, also an efficient scorer when his number was called.

SG: Kobe Bryant
No explanation needed. Simply one of the greatest of all time.

SF: Jim Pollard
Exceptional all around athlete, primarily known for his leaping ability. Extremely versatile player during the era who could play multiple positions.

PF: Lamar Odom
Extremely skilled passer, versatile, and high IQ basketball player with an ability to play 3, 4, or the 5. Too strong and lengthy for opposing threes, too quick for opposing fours and fives. Poses match up issues.

C: Vlade Divac
Widely regarded as one of the passing big men to ever play the game. He was more mobile the most centers and a good shooter from distance, also was very discipline and fundamentally found.

6th man: Donnie Freeman
Career 18.9 ppg. 4x ABA all-star.

HC: Mike Brown
One of the best defensive coaches in the game today. Career 65% win percentage, and has never failed to make the playoffs in his 7 seasons as a hc.

---

My goal was ultimately to surround Kobe with players who can compliment him. This squad is full of efficient scorers who excel as passing the ball and playing unselfish basketball. Versatility could pose alot of matchup issues, and make the team a really tough cover. There might not be a lot of defensive standouts on my roster but I expect Mike Brown to mask that with his defensive expertise. All in all I think this team has a alot of potential to succeed on both ends of the court as long as guys play within the scope of their roles

Tyler...

Nick is underrated by Laker fans because he had to follow Magic and the team was unimpressive... But look at where he falls all-time in Lakers history...
Jamaal Wilkes is also underrated...
And Kareem in his prime was a beast like nothing we've seen. Think a bigger, more skilled Hakeem.

Kareem would have dominated this matchup on both ends of the floor... Nick could slow down Kobe and there would have been no answer for Wilkes

Vote: TylersLaker - Vlade on Kareem is unfair. I could see Kobe jacking up too much shots because of the swarming defense and not enough help. Cliff Robinson matches whatever Lamar brings in this matchup, while Nick knows Sedale's game.

Note: This is one of those situations where I'd like to see if Simba248 could explain his gameplan to breakdown Tyler's team.

Tylers Lakers takes this one.
Kareem on Vlade is overkill.
Trevor and jamaal can at least bother Kobe.

TylersLakers for me because of Kareem. The coaches in this matchup make my stomach turn though.

TylersLakers.

As much as I never count out Kobe, I really don't like Mike Brown's gameplans. Also, since he's playing against Kobe's team, I think Ariza would light it up.

Tylers of course

Simba has triangle team, and their coach is known for his ISO play, & incompetency to make advanced offensive play. That team would be wasted if Kobe just ISO, while his teammates just standing there.

as for tylers, i don't believe Mark Jackson can use big pretty well. His Warriors team scheme basically perimeter oriented, despite he has 2 very good post players in David Lee & Bogut. but as for this matchup, Tylers win.

eh, loved nick, specially his various clutch moments, but nick's short comings were plenty. he was a good 3pt shooter but his shot selection was poor and made him pretty inefficient.

having said that, i think KAJ's matchup over Vlade takes his team over Kobe's advantage over trevor.

Never said Nick was the next Magic or anything, just that he was a lot better than most people thought... There are many Laker fans that think he was a border-line scrub until they look at what he accomplished.

He was better than many people realize and hated Kobe... So I think he'd be more than happy to help on defense. And he was a better than average defender.

His biggest problem was that he was arrogant, which made his judgement suspect.

l loved nick's arrogance, lol. honestly though i've never seen people talk about him as a scrub or underrate him, so i can't comment on that.

Not so much now, but at the time people I think grew a little tired of him.
I think it was mostly because he didn't have Magic's personality.
I didn't really appreciate him until much later.

I was still reeling from Magics announcement to care too much about that era... But I was a Jones fan.

Nick the quick had his moments, but when I watched, which was rare tbh, I found myself rooting for Jones/Cedric.

Tylers.

Kareem owns this match up and like I said before, Mike Brown is the wrong coach for that team.
