Historically Mo Cheeks likes 9 man rotation.

Post#1 » by Dre Drummond » Mon Aug 5, 2013 2:44 pm

Went back thru some of his rosters and I feel like its very likely we could start this season with a 9 man rotation... Also with KCP not in that rotation at all.

He left Thadeus Young on the bench in Philly as the 12th pick to start the season and played his stars (Iggy & Andre Miller) heavy minutes. He had a bench player in Korver playing heavy minutes backing up both SG and SF. It wasn't until the GM forced Cheeks hand and traded away Kyle Korver that Youngs started getting significant playing time.

http://espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=270411002 Only played 7 players more than 8 minutes... 2 smaller minutes

http://espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=271127015 8 man rotation except for 2 minutes of blowout time for 3 players

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/boxscore?gid=2007120720 9 man rotation with rookie Young getting 12 minutes in the 20th game of the season

Obviously its impossible to say with certainty, but historically Cheeks has used smaller rotations and played stars heavier minutes than what we're used to here in Detroit. I would not be surprised if none of KCP, Mitchell, or Luigi were in the rotation on day one. Jonas, CV, Singler, Stuckey, Bynum, and Billups are all NBA caliber players and might all beat out our trio of rookies this year to start the season.

One of Jonas, CV, or Mitchell will get backup minutes at PF.
One of Jonas, Singler, or Luigi will get backup minutes at SF.
One of KCP, Stuckey, Singler, or Billups will get backup minutes at SG.
One of Billups or Bynum will get backup minutes at PG.

If kcp can shoot, he'll get run.

Young couldnt shoot deep

He can, if the film(s) I saw on him is accurate. I would love starting KCP. I know the odds of it are extremely low, but that would give us a really athletic, and big lineup.

I just figure to see a lot of Stuckey this year. Pope getting crap minutes until he has a chance to shine, and maybe earn that starting gig.

Mo Cheeks loves defense, and steals.

I don't know how KCP couldn't end up being one of his favorite weapons by the time reg season starts.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

I think he likes him and I hope he finds his way to the sl. I'd love to have this line-up and rotation:

Jennings, Caldwell-Powe, Smith, Monroe, Drummond
Bench: Villanueva, Singler, Jerebko, and Billups

9 deep maybe, off the bench I can see KCP getting run because he was a high pick, Bynum because of Drummond obviously, Stuckey & Singler. Thats about it.

Datome will likely have a regular rotation spot.

Stuckey is highly likely, IMO to be traded for some other better fitting (SG who can really shoot) guy also on an expiring contract.

The two guys on our roster who I cannot figure out a natural role for are JJ and Stuckey. They can both play in this league, but I don't see the fit on the Pistons.

Datome is an unknown international player. We need to pump our breaks on him, we have no idea what he will be for us just yet.

Until Stuck is moved (I agree he will be traded) he will be in the rotation. Stuckey fits perfectly, his skill set is outstanding but hes too inconsistent to be a long term fit. I cant see a fit for Jerebko.

^Agreed. We had TONS of guys last year penciling in Slava as a rotation player, and even a few as a starter and he turned out to be nothing but a bench warmer.

I have high hopes for Datome, but nothing is certain yet.

Jennings/Billups
Stuckey/KCP
Smith/Singler
Monroe
Drummond

There's 8, the rest are situational - Bynum, Datome, Jerebko are the next tier, then Mitchell and CV.
