Mark DeRosa Claimed Off Waivers

Post#1 » by Wo1verine » Thu Aug 8, 2013 2:09 am

Blue Jays veteran Mark DeRosa has been claimed off of waivers, sources tell Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). The claiming team is not yet known, however. Toronto has until tomorrow to work out a trade, let him go, or pull him back off of waivers.

DeRosa, 38, is enjoying his best offensive season in years, hitting .231/.317/.448 with seven homers in 164 plate appearances. The utility man could be of value to a contender and only makes about $230K for the rest of the season, the prorated portion of his modest $750K salary

He wouldn't bring back anything, but that's still good enough for me! I rather have a younger player on the roster at this point.

He's been solid for us. Hate to see him go but he's just treading water here.

DeRosa has a team option for next season, so if AA wants to keep him, it's probably for 2014.

His TO is for $750k, and we're really not going to fill a bench spot with anyone but a pre-arb player for less than that, and we don't really have any of those that can be left to rot for 100 games a year. I'd keep him unless a team is actually willing to give up their 63rd-best prospect to acquire him or some such.

I'd rather keep him, unless he wants out. We would get nothing for him in a trade

Sounds like the claiming team isn't offering their 63rd best prospect, because Rosenthal says the Jays aren't going to trade him.

ICYMI: From late last night: #BlueJays’ DeRosa was claimed on waivers, but the team will not trade him, according to sources ...

DeRosa would appear an ideal fit for a contender, but #BlueJays hold $750K option on him for 2014 and may very well exercise it.

Most teams put nearly all players on waivers as a procedural move. Sometimes it’s just to gauge interest. Not always with intent to trade.
