BOURBONNAIS -- With 44 career starts and now 10 snaps in Friday's preseason opener, the new Chicago Bears coaching staff has plenty to review when it comes to J'Marcus Webb.
For one day, at least, the right tackle has been demoted. The Bears are using rookie Jordan Mills, a fifth-round pick from Louisiana Tech, with the first unit Sunday afternoon in the first practice since the 24-17 loss at Carolina. Webb is playing with the second team at left tackle.
Panthers left end Charles Johnson beat Webb for a sack. Webb started at left tackle the previous two seasons. He was the starting right tackle as a rookie in 2010.
Veteran offensive tackle Jonathan Scott remains sidelined with a sore right knee. He started five games at right tackle last season and would likely be an option if he was healthy.

Good. What are the odds that he gets cut before the season even starts?
I also wonder if they are trying to make Slauson the new center?

Brown too. Long is with the starters. And then you ask yourself how good the Bears O line can be with 2 rookies together on the right side. I'm disapointed. But glad that Webb won't be getting the benefit of doubt anymore. Anyway Webb is backing up LT and Britten RT. I think the Bears need to come up with a better solution.

I would be more comfortable with Jonathan Scott starting at RT.

Re: Webb Demoted
By the way, if Emery comes away with 2 starters on the O line, 2 future starting linebackers and a capable wide receiver with upside to start or be a 3rd receiver, that's about as good as it ever gets. One draft year the Bears got like 5 starters and soon therafter went to and won the superbowl. I'm not saying this draft is as good because I really don't know about Mills who is in right now by default. And the jury is out on quality for the others. I'm only saying nice job Mr Emery.

Jordan Mills NFL Combine Scouting Report
What I wouldn't give for a Right Tackle
ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Mills has tremendous size and power in his upper and lower body. Mills is always hustling, and doesn't stop working until the whistle blows. He shows good awareness on stunts and sells play action passes very well. Mills has a very good first step. Takes a powerful inside step to cut off defenders. Showcases this step and balance on seal and reach blocks. Coordinated, with a good pass set.
WEAKNESSES Inconsistent in his aiming point. Will grab outside of the chest plate, which will result in holding calls. Mills isn't very quick off the snap, and can be beaten almost instantaneously because of this. Mills can also be found lunging at his blocks too often. Never played left tackle.
NFL COMPARISON Michael Oher
BOTTOM LINE Mills is a powerful player with tremendous size. He combines this size with great hustle. Aside from a couple starts at guard his freshman season, Mills has only played at right tackle, but scouts will likely see him as a versatile prospect capable of playing left tackle, right tackle, or guard. Mills could find himself as a top-100 selection.

Re: Webb Demoted
^^^all his weakness sound like they can be coached out of him, or at least minimized with better technique/anticipation:
And it sounds like he gets it. Long always says the same things about getting his technique down. JMarcus has said something about getting better, but has he ever used the word technique? Maybe he has, but I don't recall anything other than reading some stupid tweets. Lately about how practice is cramping his love life. And Mills is said to have tremendous hustle. If only J'Marcus had that, he'd be all pro instead of falling down the depth chart of a coach that actually utilizes accountability as a coaching technique

communication ability, focus on the job at hand is what Mills and Long appear to understand, more than Webb especially. And they both sound smarter than Webb and Brown. I've always believed intelligence is at a premium on the O-line. Second only to QBs. And Long brings bad intentions. Very important too.
But rookies, man that is something that has a limited upside short term.
“I did pretty good [at Carolina],” Mills said. “I’m my worst critic so I think I did OK, coach said I did pretty good, now I just have to keep working and get my technique down.

[Long] really did well and did some good things,” coach Marc Trestman said. “Made some mistakes but he had a good presence about him, he was good on the sideline, he was able to explain to Aaron [Kromer, offensive coordinator] what was going on out there. It was a good sign.”

I thought that Scott did a decent job last season. If Mills is capable of growing while also keeping Cutler clean, I'm all for it.
It's just extremely hard to rely on rookie O-Linemen. I'm just tired of our line being the weakness of the team year in & out.

I think they're giving the spot to Mills to maximize his reps while Scott is gone. But it's probably Scott's job to lose once he's back, unless Mills is completely ready mentally and looks amazing by the time Scott is back.

Re: Webb Demoted
webb always looked like a RT, sometimes a LT, but he never ever played like one. He is pure hot garabage and any undrafted free agent would be better. The quicker we start mills, the better.

Second point: Kromer is as good as it gets at developing not just offensive linemen, but also offensive linemen who are late-round draft choices. Jermon Bushrod (fourth round); Jahri Evans (fourth round); Carl Nicks (fifth round).
And who are rookies: Evans started all 16 games as a rookie. Nicks started 13.

Re: Webb Demoted
With the start of the regular season now less than four weeks distant, the intensity of training camp ticked up several notches to what coach Marc Trestman terming a “vicious practice.”
Some of the “vicious” was at the expense of the younger Bears carrying some heavy expectations. Rookie right tackle Jordan Mills was beaten several times in practice by Corey Wootton in team sessions, taken to the shed by a veteran defensive end who had seven sacks last season.

Re: Webb Demoted
I am all for throwing the rookies in there. Webb has had way more chances than he deserves. The only thing I ever hear is that he has everything physically to be a great Tackle, but just doesn't do it. Cut him, and move on, he clearly doesn't have what it takes. See what Mills has to offer. At least the coaching staff will get a chance to see how he reacts in-game, so they know what to correct and work on in the future, even if they want to move to Scott. Having him sit on the bench while Webb gives up sacks to Jay does nothing for the team.

Re: Webb Demoted
Take a look at this interview - Kromer on the O-Line.
http://www.chicagobears.com/multimedia/ ... 54b6921f2b
He actually states that "IF [Webb] is gonna be on the team IF he make our 8 then he's gonna need to be able to play more than one position"
IF?
Wow!, thats pretty strong to say about a guy who you penciled in as a starter. Who are the 8 THIS week?
Starters
-------------
J. Bushrod LT
M. Slauson LG/C
R. Garza C/G
K. Long RG
J. Mills RT
Reserves
-------------
E. Britton LT/RT
J. Brown RG/LG
So it actually comes down to:
Webb (RT/LT) vs Williams (C/LG) vs Scott (RT/LT)
I'll go out on a limb and say.....Webb won't make the team if Mills plays well at RT and holds onto the starting job.

Re: Webb Demoted
Cutler taking the opportunity to throw dirt over Webb's body
Cutler is so over Webb. He was over Webb last year when he *gasp* bumped him, and screamed common sense at him. Cutler was ripped for doing then what is figuratively being done right now by the coaching staff.
"The two rookies we have right now, they're pretty far along," quarterback Jay Cutler said. "They're really talented guys physically. We'll get them caught up mentally. They want to be in there, they want to do a good job, and that's the most important thing. If you have a guy that wants to do it, we'll figure out a way."

Williams and Brown are locks IMO. He's competing with Britton and Scott at this point.

If those rookies start only because the alternatives are pathetic excuses for NFL players which Emery made zero attempt to upgrade in his first year, then he's still a terrible GM. I'll give Emery credit when the offensive line plays well. Starting two rookies on the offensive line is a move that reeks of desperation.
