How much does Jason Terry have left? Is he a factor?

Post#1 » by EGarrett » Wed Aug 14, 2013 4:40 pm

Question for people who watched Terry on Boston last year. I know that he's a guard who is getting up in age, but he was a big factor on the Mavericks in 2011.

Was the acquisition of Terry a significant thing for us? Can he be a real upgrade at either back-up guard spot?

I doubt many Nets fans actually watched Boston a lost last year.

You may want to post/ask this on the BOS board but there's no guarantee that it would be well received.

He just didn't fit there. He averaged 37% from three all season, shot 42% from three in the playoffs.

Doc had him and Bradley split the PG duties from what I saw which is why he kept talking about him knowing Kidd and Deron already, he seems to feel misused in Boston.

He should be fine here. Heard he got some sort of treatment to get his lingering injuries cleaned up.

He has the same amount as Pierce IMO. He'll probably thrive here due to the big stage of NY.

Teryy didn't play nearly as horrible as everyone wants to make it out. No, he wasnt the 6th man of the year like he was in dallas. but he didnt play poorly. His 3 point shooting was down a bit, bu still respectable at 37-38%. he also had a 56 TS%. by comparison, he had a higher FG%, 3pt %, FT%, and TS% then JR Smith.

His role was drastically different then boston, he was asked to be a shot creator for others at the point, instead of just a gunner off the bench. he handled the ball as a facilitator too often. he really needs to be a guy who scores off of other players or who when he has the ball is in all out attack mode. he should be doing that alot more here.

i expect him to have a phenominal year and be in the 6th man of the year running again. he seems super motivated and excited to play for us. id expect a 13-14 ppg 40% from three season

I mean I don't think Terry is very good anymore.

But hes not being asked to do much here. Hes not even the best player on our second unit. As long as he can continue to shoot 3 pointers well, he can be an asset.

Terry hasnt taken a step back and he is certainly a really good player still. he is going to suprise anyone who thnks he has lost a step. he certainly has not from watching him last year. his role and surroundings had alot more to do with his dip in production... which was already insanely overstated

As your resident lifelong Celtic fan who is now also a Paul Pierce Nets fan & who saw almost every Celtics game:

Jet was asked to playmake a lot out of necessity and he was very bad at it. His D also basically sucked.

He should only be used to attack on O & shoot spot up 3s. He can still shoot. See numbers posted earlier in this thread.

:0)
SamIam 2010: Truth's ability to play so incredibly efficiently is so UNDERAPPRECIATED. Bballcool 2012: Amazing how great Pierce has been for so long. Continues to defy age! KG 2013: P is original Celtic. Wherever he goes, we go. This is The Truth's house.

Unless you expect us to average 130ppg, or players to alternate playing games there is no way he averages 13-14ppg.

Lopez
D.Will
JJ
PP
KG
JT
AB
AK

Will be our leading scorers in some resemblance to that order, and I'm more expecting JJ and PP in that range.
What matters will be his percentages and defense.

i dont see that being the order at all... i think it will be something along the lines of:

Lopez - 18
pp-15
dwill 15
jet 13
jj 11
kg10
ab-9
ak -8

I think JJ will be all over up and down based on the game, matchup, his flow, etc. i think he will have some 20 point games and some 6 point games. same with KG on a lower scale... i think with less minutes and less touches he see far fewer point per game. i can see dwill and pierce flip flopping at 2/3 in scoring, but overall i think they will be right around 15-16.

jet i think will have a consistent role, touches, and shot attempts and be right at 13-14. he is going to benefit as much as anyone with his team, role, and surroundings. im looking for a really season from him.

13ppg for jet is too high.

He will score consistently off the bench, but that is a lot for how complete our team's offense is.

I'm thinking more like 10-11ppg. He won't get as many minutes as he did in Boston or Dallas. 26 mpg in Boston, 31 mpg in DAL. But, he will be more efficient.

He is going to be a good scorer and a huge energy boost off the bench for around 20mpg. I think he has that left from what I have seen over the last 2 years.

His game isn't based on athleticism despite being nicknamed the 'Jet'.

As long as his shot falls and he's knocking down crucial shots in close games, most Brooklyn fans will be thrilled.

I think he's definitely lost a few steps, but its more likely that last year was an aberration than the new normal for him.

He should do fine.

My question would be can Terry play PG if needed ?

If Deron goes down who backs up Livingston ?

Taylor ?

Livingston. Terry cannot play PG whatsoever, he's strictly a scorer.

You could be right. Terry's biggest weakness last season was that he had to play SOME type of point guard. The good news for the Nets is that Kidd knows Terry's game as well as anyone can as teammates in Dallas. Therefore, I am fairly certain that Terry will be used as an off guard. Nets are lucky that they have the versatility of Joe Johnson to help run the offense when Deron rests. It will be REALLY interesting as a basketball fan to see if Kidd does something like play Livingston at pg and Terry at sg but obviously have them each defend their height.

I agree with the first half, but the expectation at the end is outsized for Terry at this point. I watched him a ton last year (as a C's fan) and he did get unfairly criticized to some degree. I think a lot of fans (myself included) had the most vivid memories of him from the playoffs in 2011. That guy showed up during one of the Knicks playoff games, but he's not that guy full, or even part time. Tough to live up to your own personal all-time hot streak on a regular basis.

As much as I hate to say it it was easy to get spoiled by watching Ray Allen, and both Terry and Lee got the brunt of it and were called busts, even though they were essentially right on their career averages in terms of efficiency. But as a whole, the season last year just never gelled, so a bit of a bounce back for any of the guys on the roster is fair.

Just don't expect Terry to play point guard, do much of anything on D but the basics, and enjoy his enthusiasm and interviews, and when he does get hot for a game or two in the playoffs.

Edit - He is genuinely excited about what he's doing, so not a criticism, but he did get a Leprauchan/Larry O'Brien trophy (edit- tattoo) before last season. Not sure if he still has it or not. Got to love that confidence.
