Will Rodney Stuckey Bounce Back?

Post#1 » by Natopher » Tue Aug 20, 2013 9:35 am

Rodney Stuckey had arguably the worst season of his career last year. All his shooting % dropped from the previous year and his PPG took a significant dive (especially early on). I'm just curious what people are expecting from him this season. Every time I imagine our rotation for next season I try and leave him out of it, but he has been a very productive player for us. For his career he's a 13.4 ppg player, and the past 3 years (excluding the most recent one) he averaged 16.6, 15.5 and 14.8 ppg.

I'm not banking on him having a productive season, but it wouldn't surprise me if he did. For his career (even though he's been infuriating) he's always been a solid player. I remember 2 years ago when we were starting BG with Knight and bringing Stuckey off the bench. Stuckey always seemed to do exceedingly well in these games playing the 6th man role. He was really thriving off the bench, scoring lots of points (mostly off free throws) on limited attempts. That said, I won't hold my breath for that Stuckey coming back, but if he did he'd give us another very solid bench player.

How well do you guys think he'll perform next season? My guess is that he'll be very close to the player he was 2 years ago when he averaged 14.8 on 43% FG, 32% from 3 and 83% from FT. I don't know if he'll score as many points as no one knows how many minutes he'll play. But I think at least his efficiency will be on par with what it was that season.

Rodney Stuckey had actually developed into a starting quality pg before Joe drafted bK and forced Frank to have to try to turn Stuck into an SG.

He controlled the pace, scored on free throws, and protected the ball. I think he'll end up a quality 2nd pg somewhere else if not here. He needs to have the ball in his hands. He doesn't finish or shoot well enough to be a starting SG.

He was our best pg the past 2 years (other than Calderon).
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.

The problem with Stuckey is not only his play but also the expectations. For some reasons many fans (and not only fans) thought that no. 15 pick in the draft will be the next Chauncey. And when it became clear that he isn`t, he was criticized for almost everything. If he is judged only on his production he is quite good rotation player in the NBA. If he is judged on expectations then he is a crap. Simple as that

I think this post sums up Bolek's point pretty good.

This is our modus operandi. As a young player, we anoint him the next Dwyane Wade. Then we openly ponder if he's superior to James Harden. When we discover he is what he is, and that's a borderline starter having a down year, we rip out his innards like a pack of bloodthirsty wolves. After that, we move on, searching for the next piece of raw meat.

Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

The book seems to have been written on Stuckey as it relates to being in Detroit. I do not expect a huge difference over what he has been over the past few years. Stuckey seems to be a dude who has to be coddled and reassured, otherwise he plays the indifferent and aloof card.

His waning efforts speak to so personality and behavioral issues.
His lack of development speak to some work ethic and talent limitations.

IMO, Stuckey would be motivated on a team built around him. If he were the first option with the greenest of green lights, we would see an exciting player who drives and scores relentlessly. His strength and passing ability make him a load (bull in the china shop) for opposing guards.

He could excel elsewhere as a spark off the bench.

I expect very little from him in Detroit this year.

I think I've been disappointed enough by him. I'm a former Stuckey supporter. After my support meetings, I'm not more realistic in my Stuckey expectations. In words of Lupe Fiasco: the bar (on Stuckey) is set so low I need a shovel to get at it.

I see more fg attempts during his contract year... somebody in this high volume shooting lineup will be unhappy... only so many shots available.

We (Pistons fans) still care about Stuckey?

From the team point of view, shooters are needed. Stuckey is not and will never be a decent shooter. Time to say "bye, bye!" to him.

He was used as a spot up shooter last year which is stupid.
He needs to be a lead guard to be useful. With jennings and Billips looking to get most PG minutes, i can't see him having a huge turn around, but i think there's a possibility of him doing well next to Billips with the second unit.

When the teams offense was all about giving him shots, and put the ball in his hands 90% of the time, he could only churn out 15 PPG on rather inefficient shooting.

He was put in a position he wasn't talented enough to fulfill as the team's top option.

Players on expiring contracts most often have very productive seasons to earn their next contract. I expect Stuckey to play better under Cheeks than Frank.

It depends on what stats you use to determine efficiency, using PPS he finished 9th in the league that year between Steve Nash and Kevin Love.

Only in Detroit can they play a SG that cant shoot, pass or defend and pay him 8.5 Million. He does absolutely nothing to create for, or make anyone better then himself. To round out this future Hall Of Fame resume' the guy has a bad attitude.
Also, I agree with the above poster "Bounce back from what?"

It's not entirely Stucky's fault, the team had made bad decision after bad decision with him so they have been "Stuck" (get it?) with each other. How this guy sits in an 8.5 million salary slot is beyond me. I count the days until he is gone....

its tough to say. if hes on the ball, as a scorer off the bench with shooters around him he could be serviceable, especially in a contract year. unfortunately with BJ/Chauncey/Bynum all on the roster and no SGs other than KCP it seems like the plan is to play him off the ball, which wont be pretty.

edit- I voted option D, because I think the next team that picks him up will plan on playing in the "bench scorer" role in which I believe he can be productive in the right situation for 15-18 minutes a night.

Bounce back from what?

Stuckeys sole problem as an NBA player is consistency, if he was consistent he would be a very good starting wing.

I have some hope because of Billups and Cheeks mentorship and Stuckey being in a contract year. Im not holding my breath though.
