Casey: Ross has the most upside on the team
The only way this makes any sense at all is if it's framed through Casey's defensive mind. He did push for him once BC's top 7 were all off the board and Rucker backed him and Ed liked him enough too so BC caved. Casey thinks defence first and foremost so perhaps he means that he has the most upside to become an elite defender at his position on the team.
I don't have a ton of faith in Ross' offensive upside, myself, because he has a simplistic approach but I haven't given up on his defensive upside yet. Lateral quickness like his is incredibly rare and he could be a menace if ever he could smarten up and buy into it the way Avery Bradley does at the PG spot and the way Thabo and Tony Allen do at the SG spot. He moves from spot to spot incredibly fast and can cover a lot of ground but he needs to work harder and study more tape.
If he's going to become an impact player it has to start first on the end of the court that most fans rarely pay attention to. If Zach Lowe is writing an article about his 3+D upside within the next couple seasons I will breathe a small sigh or relief that we didn't completely waste the pick. Until then... At least we won another dunk contest, right? Right? Ah... Never mind.

Fire Casey. Not as if we needed more reasons.

Re: Casey: Ross has the most upside on the team
So I take it we're turning on Ross this season? I thought it was Lowry's turn. No wait, are we still hating on DeRozan or do we just always hate him? I swore this was Gays fault. Someone please tell me who I'm allowed to like and dislike.
Oh look, Hero in a Ross thread. At least you're consistent

According to Dwane Casey the following two things are true:
Terrence Ross has more upside than Jonas Valanciunas
Terrence Ross is more athletic than LeBron James
Think about that.

That's a funny redundant statement.

Re: Casey: Ross has the most upside on the team
Gerald Green had more potential than Ross. Means nothing.
There are high acheivers in this world & guys that just get by day to day.
There is a reason Kobe & MJ were HOF talents. It had more to do with their psychological makeup than it did their athleticism or jump shot.
So far Ross hasn't shown the psychological makeup to become an allstar in this league. The kid is too laid back.
If Ross had JV's psychological makeup, sure.....he might be an allstar one day. But that's what seperates Ross & JV.
Ross would have been a higher draft pick if he had that "it" factor. The reason he was considered late lottery was because he didn't.

Re: Casey: Ross has the most upside on the team
Casey is almost certainly the most irrelevant interview in Toronto Raptors coaching history. Not only does he say bizarrely inaccurate things like "we've got moves planned to counter what Brooklyn is doing" and "we're looking to add some veteran toughness" but also he is a disturbingly boring and repetitive speaker of Leo proportions. Sometimes, I get the feeling like he accidentally studied last years talking points by mistake than realizes it half way through the interview. In fact, I'm fairly certain that an interview with just about any random MLSE would employee would be more insightful and informative for the state of the Raptors than one with him.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

I like Ross, but I fear for his development under Casey considering coach said similar things about Bargs.

Otherwise this is completely ridiculous statement to make, considering hes not even a top 5 player on this team. Yes the same team projected to miss the playoffs again.
you miss the real reason:
c) DD is as good as gone and Ross will replace him

The only reason he is saying this , is because he is probably the most athletic player on our team = a load of potential on both sides of the ball. The only potential JV has, is being a double double guy on a daily basis, thats about it, hes not athletic what so ever as they scouted him at the 2011/12 draft. WTF are you talking about with this "psychological makeup", you a bleep. Psychological makeup my bleep, what fact or evidence do you have of this, what if HE did have that mentality to be big, but it just didn't happen? Maybe he JUST isn't as good as what BC/CASEY thought he was/would be and he only played 1 year..but, the dude is only a year younger than derozan and people are saying Ross will be better its only his rookie season..my bleep, just because of the number of years derozan has been in the league, and derozan is by far better. I can tell you this, dont get me wrong i like JV, but everyone on here besides me and 1-2% of us, are jock riding JV like a bleep , SL is nothing. JV is one of the most fundamentally sounded centre in the league but hes no tim duncan, nor is he a hibbert or noah. Thought he does have the potential to be one of the top C's in the league, i don't see him as a franchise player, at least not on the raptors squad.
Just a reminder whenever you're about to curse please use bleep. Also don't attack posters attack the post.

Re: Casey: Ross has the most upside on the team
Just because a player is athletic doesn't mean he has more upside. Of course the plus athleticism helps to do certain things that other less athletically gifted players might not be able to do, but you need a combination of that and some kind of skill foundation. Without that skill foundation the athleticism won't do anything.
Basketball is like poetry in motion, cross the guy to the left, take him back to the right, he's fallin back, then just J right in his face. Then you look at him and say, "What?" - Jesus Shuttlesworth

Athletically the dude is a freak. Guess it depends on your definition of upside, I think Casey's right, there is nothing Terrance physically can't do but, will he ever be able to further develop any of the technical, tactical or psychological areas that are big influencing factors to what makes a player good or great. Not sure.
I have a big flaccid soft spot for the guy though.

Totally agree with the references to the psychological demands of sports and your reason for why Kobe and MJ are who they are.

First of all, I'm no Casey fan but hating on him for saying what he said by taking it literally is ridiculous. Typical RealGm lol. Coaches say stuff like this all the time, he's just tryna boost him (and cover his own ass a lil).
Anyways, I'm gonna completely take the following quote on Rudy Gay totally out of context for no reason at all:

I don't care what Casey says. He's supposed to say that crap. His actions matter more.
Fans taking his word literally is a concern too. We have fans believing Ross really has this ridiculous upside and are calling out other fans for not believing in Ross. Once they realize he isn't the second coming of Michael Jordan, we'll hear all this hate from the same fans who thought we had this superstar on our team.
