Is it fair or not? I bet the rugby players on the other teams are not very thrilled as he could change the sport....idk perhaps making it a bit more like American Football?

Re: WAY OT :: Pro Sprinter Plays Rugby
... i think it's still fair as long as there are no rules violated ... he's so quick ... they just give him the ball and he just outruns everybody on the field ...
... now i think we should sign a volleyball player to play D for us ... they jump high that they could grab a lot of rebounds and they could block / spike a lot of shot attempts too ... j/k ... ^_^

If anyone ever actually hits him on the run, he'll be retired before his back hits the ground.
That said it's pretty fun to watch while it lasts.

Re: WAY OT :: Pro Sprinter Plays Rugby
I was reading responses from people that are rugby fans
They were saying that although he had some spectacular moments on offense, he wouldn't be able to do this against a more mature, disciplined defense. They wouldn't give him an opening.
Also read that he was quite the liability on defense. Its like having an unstoppable shooter like Nash on steroids on your team. He can score, but he can't play a lick of defense
Good for him though. He is a top 40 US sprinter I think, which means he won't have much of a shot at the Olympics. Glad to see him making good use of his talents.

Re: WAY OT :: Pro Sprinter Plays Rugby
Rugby is a game of high skill. His sprinting would come in handy, but he needs to learn the dynamics of tackling (legally), kicking the ball, rucking, where to be on set plays.
With that being said, it's not like he is revolutionizing anything, Doug Howlett was a sprinter and he played for the all blacks for about 10 years.

a normal game of rugby is played with 15 players on each side. also there's no helmets or armour, unlike that game those pansies play in america
there are also different codes of rugby:
- rugby union, the pure version where do you don't give up space, but can keep possession of the ball for as long as you can control it. with 15 players on each side. rugby is generally thought of as a player's game (since you don't have to retreat to let the opposition go forward)
- rugby league, a more bastardised version, where the defence line has to retreat 10 metres, but you only have a set of 6 tackles (ie downs, they do not reset like in gridiron) to gain metres up the ground. with only 13 players on each side (they lose 2 the forward flankers). league is thought more of a fans' game, because more space = more action (ie bigger hits, more back line play)
the game they're playing is rugby union, shortened to rugby (vs rugby league, shortened to league)
7s is a super bastardised version of rugby, where there's only 7 players on the field for each side (hence 7s). there's acres of space, there's little to no forward play, as all the players on the field are generally backs in order to take advantage of skill and speed.
the idea in all of these sports, is to score more points that the other team.
- in rugby (and by extension rugby 7s), each penalty kick is worth 3 pts, each try is worth 5 pts (with additional conversion for 2 pts)
- in league, each penalty kick is worth 2 pts, each try is worth 4 pts (with additional conversion for 2 pts)
penalty kicks are taken from where the infringement was made and conversions are taken as far back from where the point of the try was scored (grounded with control), that's why conversions are taken from out wide or from in front and anywhere in between. that's why carlin was running around to ground the ball under the posts
need more?
