The first thought was ZZZzzz...last cat on the bench... then reality set in that one of our front line will likely get hurt and this guy will need to step into a major role... his makeup is good (tough & competitive) but his experience is lacking... it makes JJ more valuable.

To expect a full year of health from our front line might be unrealistic.

That's an interesting post. I don't imagine he'll be the "gets hot as hell and is unconscious" type of 3 pt shooter CV is - but this post does make me wonder if Harrellson on the team could take pressure off the coach feeling like he has to play CV as much. Plus, when (if) we trade CV midseason, a guy who can hit outside shots like Harrellson could be a nice option.

Also, the one type of player I thought the Pistons needed was a hard-nosed physical guy who was a big man, and I think this signing fills that bill.

I think there's going to be a stretch 4 lineup that we use at some point almost every game, so there's going to be consistent minutes available for a stretch big men. Before Harrellson, that was going to go to CV by default, but now I think it will be a competition in camp/preseason to win that role. If Harrellson proves he can shoot 3's as good as CV, and he also outhustles/outplays him from a defense and rebounding standpoint, then I think he will win the job. No he doesn't have a lot of experience, but its not CV actually contributes anything in that area, as far as being a smart veteran on the court.

Worst case scenario, he challenges and motivates CV to play harder all-around and have a big year and it ups his trade value.

I agree, and fills the bill is a perfect way to sum it up...especially because he plays similar to a historic piston named Bill. (Though obviously not at that level)

I like this signing because he seems like another guy with something to prove and if everyone on our team has something to prove it could be very fun to watch.

To expect Monroe AND Drumm play 82 games is very unrealistic. Drummond was even injured last year.

A stretch 4 at the cheapest of prices? Not bad. Defense may be a big concern, at least on the perimeter, but pairing him with one of Josh Smith or Drummond should cover up at least some of Harrelson's deficiencies on defense.

Via basketball reference: Smith has played in 90% of his games in the past 9 seasons. Monroe has played in has played in an astounding 98% of available games, only missing one game last season.

This isn't a front line built out of guys in their mid-30's. Smith and Monroe are two of the most durable big men in the league. Drummond doesn't have enough seasons under his belt to declare anything decisively.

Seriously. Smith was noticed for his ironman like quality of never being injured. Same with Monroe, since it would be a rarity for him to be so. Drummond should be fine as well.

Great post. When you have evidence to suggest they don't miss games, I'm not sure why you would expect otherwise. That's not to say you don't plan for it but people are calling it like its inevitable which is weird.
